Hey /v/, laptop died and I'm looking to upgrade my stock Lenovo pc with a video card that can handle most games at high with decent fps.
The system is pretty standard, 6GB ram and an Intel i5 processor.
What do you recommend? I want to keep it relatively affordable between $200 and $400.

Never really had a machine that could run anything beyond medium with 30fps, so anything is a step up for me.

;_;

Just buy a 750ti. Your stock psu isn't going to handle much more than that.

Go on kijiji or whatever you have if your american and find a secondhand card I got some 7870oc for $80 and it runs gta almost maxed and the new battlefield, its a bit stronger than the new consoles so i can safely 60fps everything

Agreed on used gear, but since it seems like Anon doesn't know his way around PCs that well I would recommend looking for a Nvidia Card as there a fewer driver problems.

Going for a 500 Watts PSU would be a good start, except if you want to upgrade your GPU later on.

Also avoid SSDs as they are great performance wise, but you really need the money elsewhere (good cooling/decent Storage/Motherboard)

Do you have a Case already? If not, try to find anything with a included PSU, saving everywhere adds up.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/gTpkMpb working on a sleeper build I'll only be gaming so I know I can save money buying a non k series processor any other ways I can save cash on this while still keeping the 980ti

Who sells a complete PC without trying to screw you over?

Not once have I seen a PC worth what they want for it. But thats just me, no hard feelings.

If you go for a 980Ti then don't save on the CPU. I'm glad I bought an i5k when I did, as I can overclock it now to fit my needs and balance it right.

You mustn't fall for the hurr durr flagship tactics, as some lower tier cards are able to handle most games just as well as their big brothers.

Don't create bottlenecks in your system, always consider your HDD, RAM, CPU, and PSU.

Also consider energy efficiency, because a card with less power under load also uses less in idle. And depending on where you live, 20 Watts can mean a lot of money saved on your energy bill. Maybe spend a little more for that gold/platinum certificate.

Alright, maybe don't quote me on "... uses less in idle" but you get the point.
