Another 20 years on Copyright to protect Mickey Mouse. No exception for crumbling decades old orphan works.

More bans on circumventing DRM because that worked so well last time.

New more severe penalties for piracy of Windows or games. Actual enforcement of anti-piracy measures required in all signatories.

Its literally going to make it that much more difficult for non-western devs to compete, but video games are the smallest concern of the results of TPP. Trans-Pacific Partnership is a large trade deal between Pacific nations to reduce trade barriers and tariffs, standardizing commercial and corporate regulation and laws across members to ease market, import and export access.

Those for it see the benefits of opening markets to emerging nations in Pacific-Asia, and in turn access to Canadian and American natural resources. Those against it see it as harmful to their country's regulations, allowing a 'secret' trade deal to determine economic and commercial policy.

It's the old free trade vs. protectionism debate again

Hollywood, Big Corportations, and Lobbyists will have near-total power to police you and send you to prison for whatever reasons they feel like listing. They can force your internet company to give them your IP address and see if you've visited any site that has a hint of torrenting material on them, then come to your house and check your computer to see what's on it. TPP will:
Make generic medicine illegal because it harms the profits of brand name.
Make copyright infringement much more strict including but not limited to doujins, cosplay, piracy, fan fiction, posting a screenshot, etc
Deregulate food control such as dangerous pesticide usage, over-fishing, etc (because this takes away from profits)
Makes it so that companies can sue for potential profit loss, this could mean literally anything so long as they can argue "well this made me lose money".
Makes it so they do not need to label GMO foods (even foods that have soy or corn spliced in which can trigger allergies). Less information is ALWAYS bad, even though most GMO is harmless.
Modding a game now illegal, circumventing DRM now illegal, piracy now a criminal act, making a youtube video with a picture of an article you're talking about or a segment of a video you're responding to now illegal...

What can you do?
Locate your nearest congress representative, call your local politicians, and tell them you do not support anyone who supports TPP.
Get your family to do the same (or friends if you have any).
This effects Europe, too. TTIP is the same thing as TPP but effecting europe.
Contact your government representatives.
Also for the upcoming elections make sure whoever you vote for is anti-TPP (off the top of my head Sanders or Trump, Paul is pro-TPP as is hillary).

It absolutely does, but that's been done with every trade agreement. Let's consider a hypothetical trade agreement in which everyone wins and no one loses. Every single person would be happy with the result. The people negotiating that treaty would be dogged by the press constantly, lobbied by special interest groups, and heckled by the ignorant masses. These treaties are negotiated in secret because the people involved want to be able to speak freely and consider ideas without being constantly harassed. Of course, they're also ruthless jews trying to enslave the world, but that's a different matter.

At least in the US the company/person who owns the copyright needs to sue in order for you to get in trouble.
However, this makes it so that they do NOT need to do anything, as it's not a criminal offense. This paired with ISPs being under obligation to spy on you and report you if you do anything illegal will make it much easier to enforce (yes that's part of TPP and TTIP too)

It hasn't passed. This will be debated for months, possibly even longer under Congress. Considering we have one major Presidential Nominee opposing it, they'd have to get it done before the next President waltzes in, which chances of that happening are slim considering the massive amount of countries and laws involved. Hell said Presidential Candidate actually has a pretty damn strong backing, especially among the younger generation.

Not exactly true. In many places it's illegal to bypass copy protection which you need to do to rip most modern media. While it's legal to have a backup in most places getting that backup involves that first step making the process illegal.

What I don't understand is that if this goes through, how is the anime/manga industry going to survive?

Perhaps in Japan it will, but anything to do with the west will just die instantly if people are getting arrested for viewing it near release as opposed to waiting months/tears for official translations

Furthermore if posting an image/video of something can get you arrested its impossible for word of mouth to promote it and there is no official advertising for these things that people actually watch, and if this nonsense about cosplayers being arrested for cosplaying becomes reality then how does anyone do anything?

I know that was non-vidya but most of the same stuff applies to vidya promotion, the youtube celebs will want their cut and they don't appreciate companies barging in on it so goodbye youtube promotion, at which point you've lost the attention of the entire pewdiwpie/markiplier generation that hurt to type

Its not meant to go after the people who download a song, its meant to go after the absolutely pervasive piracy of Windows and software for Windows. Specifically TPP will make it legal for companies to take actions against users who are violating their copyright on software.

So for instance in Windows 10 Microsoft have stated they would in the future 'encourage' users upgrading from pirated copies to obtain legitimate licenses. In the current legal situation they're very limited in what actions they can take but once TPP is ratified Microsoft would have the legal power to push an auto update that would render your system unbootable until you have paid.

>>
>>312271138
It was DRAFTED October 5, 2015. If you seriously think a law this large has passed in only one day being fast tracked or not, then you are delusional. In fact the TPP has been known since 2013 through Wikileaks, at the very least it's existence. That's 2 years just to have gotten it drafted, let alone for the actual law to be discussed, potentially and likely passed, and then put into action.

Hell all this started in 2012 actually, so make that 3 years. The main problems against it that have taken it so long as agricultural, intellectual properties, and service & investments. Just those 3 things have caused it to delay for 3 years and we're just in the drafting stage.

Considering there is still tons of public outcry, not just for civilians, but for those in positions of power too not just from the US, but from tons of the countries involved, says a lot.

This is going to be debated for months, possibly even years and likely the draft will change in that time and re-debated. Laws such as this don't just magically pop into existence and start getting enforced immediately kiddo.
>>
>>312271164
The TPP is giving multinational corporations the legal ability to sue a government for lost profits. For example, if the government builds a public hospital, and the corporate private hospital loses business because of it, they can sue the government.

In addition to this it's pretty much every draconian anti-piracy legislation ever proposed, all at once, prosecuted internationally under American law. This means, if you're not American, you've never been to America and you have NO ACCESS TO AN AMERICAN LAWYER, you'll still be charged under American law, and as a result of having no access to American legal aid, you have no ability to defend yourself.

It's great to see kids and young adults being politically active, but when you guys grow up, you'll realize there are more important things in politics than piracy and free speech.

Most adults are too busy worrying about taxes, health care, education and immigration to get angry over the small things in life. With time, I'm sure the rest of you will mature as well. Agreements like these pass all the time, and are a normal part of political bureaucracy.

This has been the case since the dawn of civilization anon. There have always been and always will be those whose only motivation in life is to seek wealth and power over others. American Civilians lost power from the Government a long time ago. America stopped being a Republic where the people are in control and started becoming a Corporate Police State, it's been like this for ages now.

>>
>>312272625

I was actually entertaining the idea of diversions to keep the TPP off the public radar, but the government is nowhere near coordinated enough to intentionally work together to pull this off. Individually? Sure, Obama might actually be using the Iran deal as cover for the TPP, but I doubt that too, since Obama is clearly trying to create a legacy treaty, and "I stopped Iran from having the nuke" sounds way better than "I passed this trade thing, it didn't even make the paper."

Plus SCOTUS has a history of not giving a flying fuck what the other branches have to say. It's sort of the reason why they have that job for life.

Obviiously everyone should still make a big stink about it, but expand that from just telling other random people. Start talking directly to your member of congress, via phone, email, or snail mail. Congresspersons are way more inclined to listen to people who take the time to communicate with them directly, since the odds of them voting are way higher.

The average person can't realistically do anything because the same corporations control the media which makes their decisions for them.

That example is not the intention of the dispute settlement part of the agreement.

Here's another more likely example, a company makes a deal with a government to do some work, infrastructure building, software development, whatever. Then there's an election and the new people in power decide they don't want to honor that deal out of spite, it's a deal "those other guys" made, and just tells the company to go fuck themselves. The company is now out a lot of money through no fault of their own. With this treaty they can now sue the government for fucking them over like that.

It's not as ridiculous as people make out, although I would argue it is going a little too far it mitigating risk for business and if easily abused.

Because monopolies.
They don't give a shit about small businesses. If that mom and pop pizza shop closes down a new pizza hut opens up instead.
The information isn't warped. It really is that bad.

>>312274204
Smaller stores (i.e. competition) get shut down or sued to oblivion. By "smaller" I mean anything that isn't walmart or a mega corporation.
Price of food goes up, while the quality goes down (less regulation on food production and safety).

>>312274228
And no more generic medicines, and small shops closing up, and food safety goes down...
It's a change for the worse. Do something about it.

Look, here's an experiment for you: Go ask your parents if they care about the TPP. Chances are good they will say "no".

Is that because they're stupid? No. Your parents know more than you do. They just have a more mature perspective on politics, and that's something that comes with age.

You're braindead. The TPP/TTIP by themselves can and will fuck up our everyday lives; the ramifications of these agreements will be enormous and most people are going to be wondering why their lives suddenly got a whole lot shittier and have no idea why.

It makes European gun control global.

So yeah, that's gonna be fun.
>>
Yeah, I doubt it. your doomsday TPP scenario involves several small industries crumbling. Creative work often depends on the loose enforcement, and the companies the creatives support know it too. It would be PR suicide, it would throttle the entire country's economy, and it would be a waste of money on the company's part. So even if this passes, I don't think things are going to change that much for us.

>Thinking this shit would effect the media industry

Haha, no.

I live in this shithole of Hollywood, believe you me, Small corporations for TV shows and Animation show up all the damn time, it would kill them if they defected to just the major studios. Networks thrive on getting new content out here, It would completely kill the economy.

The Average person here watches a show for 2 seasons before getting bored and moving on. I HIGHLY doubt this will affect videogames animation or any form of art medium.

Medicine and food on the otherhand, yeah thats a pickle.

Outside of losing Vietnam, that entire post is wrong or hilariously exaggerated.

America:
Killed natives with smallpox
Got DC burned down by Canadians
Killed each other over slavery
Teddy Roosevelt started a war by himself as vice-secretary of the navy, because fuck yeah I'm conquering Cuba
Jumped into WWI late, sealed the victory by providing fresh troops to support a beleaguered french army
Provided material support throughout WWII. Jumped into WWII militarily after the first ~2 years (out of 5), almost solo'd the Pacific
Overreached in Korea, causing China to enter the war and forcing today's stalemate/status quo
Peace with honor'd Vietnam, but failed to provide support for the South after pullout causing South Vietnam to fall and all those lives wasted for nothing
Has been fighting ISIS for like 2 years, but it probably will end up being a decade because everyone is now politically afraid of touching the middle east

Russia:
Pic related
Failed so hard at WWI it destroyed itself
Killed each other over communism
Failed to fight against fucking Poland, only won against Poland by having the Nazis do all the work
Got whooped by a bunch of Finns, winning only because they drowned the finns in russian blood
Won WWII after spilling a ton of Russian blood while supported by imported American vehicles, infrastructure, and raw materials (the reason Soviet production was 100% war machines was because all their trains, communications, and supply trucks were made in America)
Beat a tired IJA in Manchuria and Korea, didn't even manage to get to Japan before the war ended (not that they would even be able to get there because their navy was shit, and always will be shit)
Has only been bombing ISIS for like a day, after bombing other not-ISIS targets because why the fuck not, those bombs were going to expire anyway

the Korean War was a victory. The objective was to save South Korea. The fact that they didn't fully capitalize off the most monumentous turnaround single battle in the 20th century (Inchon, where North Korea went from controlling 99% of South Korea to having to defend North Korea from falling) doesn't mean the initial objective wasn't achieved.

Also Canadians didn't burn down the white house. That's a retarded meme Canadians came up with. If Canadians burned down the white house, the USA would be called Canada. It was an amphibious assault by Britons who ended up departing right back to the UK

be sure to have physical activities in the recommended parks and recreation zones.

please no trespassing and do not be in these zones after dark, after all, it's a felony to be in parks after an arbitrary time period. If you're looking for late night activities, please move yourself to a dedicated bar in an area that supports late night activities or else you're criminal scum

Probably because most Americans are so engrossed in their own fucked culture to see the bigger picture. Americans just see things for what they can buy and Corporations provide that. It's all about materialism basically. People are only worried about themselves in the US, and as long as they don't think it affects them, they don't care. They'll still be able to buy their designer shoes and go to Wal-mart to buy their shit produce. Americans only care when we go to war, that's when they start protesting or when Cops get a bit out of hand.

If you;re not going to bother reading it, then you shouldn't have an opinion on the matter. You're being a contrarian for the sake of it, which makes you sound like a pretentious hipster.

If you bothered to actually read instead of sounding like a retard, you'd understand this doesn't only affect video games, anime, etc. But it effects agricultural and food quality, it effects medicine at an affordable price, it effects subsidiary companies, it effects screenshots, words, etc. all under the guide of copyright infringement.

It's basically a bill to strip away any amount of freedom and survivability you have left and put it into the hands of Corporations.

At least read and be informed of things before you say asinine things.
