Keep in mind it needs to be a good fps but also handle coop well.
Doom doesn't handle coop that well.

My favorites are CoD Zombies and Halo coop, especially 3 (since it has 4 player, but the campaign itself unfortunately isn't that great)

Is quake Coop handled well? Is exploring some ancient bloodstained fortress with you bros, gunning down the monsters any fun in Quake?

I love Doom but Quake didn't quite do it for me. The way the weapons felt, the level design and the enemy types worked really well together in Doom. Quake's enemies were bullet sponges that didn't react to getting shot and the levels had too much annoying shit like platforming sections.

You serious? If you count "people who played and liked the game" as fan-base then sure. But the people actively play the game, or have even played the game in recent times is very small. Just look at Quake Live, sometimes I can't even find people dueling in America, and sometimes can't find CA servers for T4.

The first Quake fucking sucks. The levels are boring as shit and the music was a gigantic disappointment.
The multiplayer is the only good aspect, which is a damn shame since Doom had kickass singleplayer.

By that I meant all the weird little details about enemies, like the Grunts in Quake 1 having their brains fucked with and their pleasure centers wired to light up like Xmas trees when they kill things, or random notes on the pecking order of Hell's demons and shit.

Doom is more frantic, but the level design in Quake is stronger and skill cap is insanely higher.

I recommend Quake more, but I will note what I consider its flaws:

> retarded enemy pathing, which matters more than Doom because of more compex level geometry. Carmack was the god of software renderers but was complete shit (or just negligent) at writing enemy AIs.

Higher entry barrier, I'd say. Making Doom maps is as simple as drawing lines on a grid. I've never tried my hand at Quake mapping, but even with modern mapping utilities I doubt it's as easy as Doom.

2.5D is more manageable than full 3D.
You can read and hear about how taxed everyone at id was when making Quake, even Carmack was at his limit.
Hell, Sandy Petersen used to be able to roll out practically half the levels when working on Doom/Doom2, but only made 7 for Quake.

3D level design, modelling, and texturing were a lot harder than Doom's, which was basically drawing sprites and making levels of 2D floor polys with set heights.

On top of that, doing the vis and lighting calculations on Quake levels took forever back in the day.

Quake for both sp and mp for me, just a much better experience in my opinion. After getting used to Quake/qw movement and weapon mechanics, it's very hard to go back to Doom, Q2 also feels clunky and boring in comparison.

I can agree that Quake shotgun kinda sucks, enemies might feel like bullet sponges if you're used to Doom, music is very different and color palette is super brown. Some of those things are personal preferences, and overall I just much prefer Quake gameplay and aesthetics, being a fan of early 3D stuff certainly helps.

Coop in quake is pretty much effortless to get working properly but the vanilla experience isn't really the optimal, I had a mod I made myself to make coop play better, including features like damage buffing when close to friends (otherwise damage was lower than normal and you took more damage from enemies), and actually having to restart level if all players die in a rapid succession. Sadly I've lost the mod and need to remake it one day.
