I honestly think he is trying to (and failing to) change gaming for the better. The thing is he and the rest of the company have been losing touch, yet they are stubborn as always.
I think their intention was to give modders some type of financial cushion so that they could continue their hobby. A lot of modders end up leaving the community either because A: They need to support themselves, and modding was just a hobby, or B: They were talented enough to get a job as an actual game developer, which they immediately jumped at the opportunity because what modder wouldn't want to make a living designing video games? Still, this all falls flat on its face because 25% and steambux only. Though I have a feeling Bethesda is partially to blame for that.

Maybe because of the backlash, they will, for the first time ever, pull back. But I don't see that happening.
What I do see happening, at the absolute worst, is steam workshop becoming more and more obscure as all the greedy modders who are only in it for the money migrate to Steam to make a profit off of it, resulting in an overall loss of quality. While the rest of the modding community can continue releasing content wherever they like.

Valve has been creatively bankrupt for years now. They're one of the proportionally richest companies in the business yet do not create games for years now. Even the mods they assimilated and ported onto source are terribly maintained. Even looking back at their track record it's nowhere near impressive aside from HL1. The question is why they were so hyped all along when they never really produced classic titles. Portal was a tech demo, TF2 was a casualized multiplayer shooter with 5 maps, Dota 2 and CS: GO aren't even theirs, L4D was mediocre. I think it's their quirky writing and voice acting and LE GABEN XDD STEAM SALES that stand for the majority of their reputation.

He's just a normal CEO.

At that point, they just become DLC. The problem with this is the content creator is still only getting 25%.

The problem with that is that it's basically a way for Valve and developers to sell additional DLC with absolutely no risk on their end, and incensing them to let modders finish the game for them.

25% is about what you'd make on the app store ,which provides QC and assistance, but more importantly it's a locked platform, so if you want to play ball it's app store or nothing.

This is why the Steambox exists. It's a way to further close the ecosystem. Ideally you will not be able to buy games, mods or dlc from anywhere other than steam.

I have no issue with the payed modding thing, except maybe the percents could use adjusting.

You can still offer mods for free if you want, or a pay whatever you want option, and if you offer it for money then you, valve, and the publisher of the game all get money for the sale.

The percents might need some adjusting, but I think its pretty cool that this is possible. Modders do a shitload of work and rarely got rewarded for it outside of fringe cases like dota and counterstrike and all that good stuff.

I've seen several interviews of him talking and enjoyed what he had to say. He definitely is a smart person. However, I realize now that I misinterpreted what he said on a few topics. For example, I once heard about him speaking very highly of user created content and how it's going to get bigger and bigger. I don't deluge my library with cheap steam games like the rest of /v/ does (I have ~50 games on steam, ~20 GOG) so I have less of a financial investment in it to make me lose my shit like some people here and on lereddit the last few days.

My first thoughts were that this was yet another way for valve to monopolize the PC marketspace and offer less of an incentive to make new software, or offer better services on their own proprietary steam platform. Imagine if the unofficial patches get sold buying patches, the shit storm that bethesda won't come out of hiding to fix what they initially started. Skyrim dies and if the next elder scrolls isn't patched correctly looks like we're paying for unofficial patches. It will literally sink Bethesda over night knowing people have to pay for patches that are obvious fuck ups on the main companies part. Their half finished games will crumble and no one will play them because who the fuck wants to pay for a patch to a bug they should have fixed in the beginning.
Also if they patch now it will break most mods including all the patches,SKSE,FNIS,Scriptdragon and most versions of ENB that rely on lighting mods, the only thing left unharmed is what is already sold by other games. Skins nothing that actually fixes or changes the game just fucking skins and not even good ones at that all the ones with script and particle effects are broken because of the patch they implement if they intend to fix the problems or patch out nonworkshop.

They will either break all mods with trying to fix the problem unofficial patches have done or break them by implementing nonworkshop mods and forcing you to feed them everything or have nothing also having to give them your bank info to even put shit on the workshop for free.

They will kill any real form of modding to push in nothing but shit skins no one cares about.
They will kill it and everyone let it happen, no one is on the right side of this. At this point not even modders deserve a donation button they deserve nothing because they are letting this happen.
