>tfw movies will never revert to good special effect prosthesis
Final Fantasy VIII
The plot has a lot of dumb shit but the timeline in VIII actually makes sense. Nobody is allowed to change the past because changes made by time travellers already "catch" by the time the present arrives. So the protagonists beat the villain in the future before going back to their time, but because history is set in stone the villain will eventually arise generations into the future again. It is neat.
Are there any games with time-travel that only goes forward?
I feel this is the only way to "get it right".

Time TRAVEL
Is nearly impossible.
Time messaging would be possible, very simple messages send with particles, but the thing is, you could only send the messages back in the time where the receiver for these messages is already built.

>>291219036

>>291216356
The only way time travel is done "right" is if it's a set timeline. Nothing you do in the past changes anything in the future.
If go to the past to change something, then you never had a reason to go back back in the first place.
Although that does raise the question of if it's possible to change the past if what you changed had nothing to do with your reason for going back.

Sands of Time
>>291221402
The vita is the worst version for gameplay reasons, mainly due to the fact that note taking can be incredibly annoying due to no stylus and second screen. It's a god send for the 3ds version. Makes shit so much more enjoyable.
The visuals and sound are better and it is less buggy, despite there only being one bug in the 3ds version which has had a work around patch for it since ages ago.
>>291217134
Majora's Mask nails the concept perfectly since it's far more gameplay-oriented then focusing on a paradox-laden story.
There isn't a point to going back in time because the new future it would create already exists in a separate dimension. Just go straight to the other dimension and cut out the hassle.
>>291221331
It doesn't make the least of sense at all compared to all the rest, it's the most plausible, look if you have the possibility to send a message back in time to yourself and do it right now you are still the guy who never got a message earlier in your life, you are the guy who sent the message, you wouldn't know you received the message, you wouldn't change.
Now since the message will arrive never the less there will be a you who get a message from the future.

Yea, but then you stop to think, and it's still bullshit like all other time travel stories.
How and why does Young Xehanort have the ability to travel through time if only someone who does not have a physical body can do so?
How can any of the new Orgy13 travel to the current time period if they could only do so if a current living incarnation of Xehanort needed to be around, and old man Xehanort only fully reappeared after all the new Orgy13 members had gathered?
How did Ansem SoD even figure out he could time travel?
If one cannot change the past, as Master Xehanort said, then what is bringing all these other incarnations of Xehanort from different time periods doing?
>>291221662

the situation was so out of control by that point that killing himself was the only option. bruce willis was already close to killing tetsuo's mom which makes him grow up into psychic hitler. killing himself served a purpose for the good of someone other than himself, the young version was a nihilistic edgelord remember? it was thematically sound and a perfectly fine end to the movie and closed the time loop.
time travel is usually a clusterfuck in movies but looper handled it well.

As much as I love Terminator, it is sadly not a franchise with legs the way many of its contemporaries were. It had two good movies, two mediocre ones, and a pretty decent TV show spinoff, but it hasn't actually been popular since the 90s, and every attempt to revive it has only driven that point home.

When I went back and watched it as an adult it just plain did not hold the same appeal to me as the original two did. It was an alright action movie, but the first two were instant classics. And let's be honest-- everyone in T3 was kind of a jerkish asshole, without nearly enough of the human moments that made you care about the characters in the first two movies. The asshole T-850 from T3 had some great comedy moments, but as a character he was not nearly as memorable or endearing as the more empathetic T-800 from T2.

Yeah, Achron came out. It's really good, but MAN, is it hard to grasp.
It's a game where you can lose a fight in the past and then send units from the future to actually ensure they even get built.
It's also a game where I've once seen someone zerg rush his opponent with the Humans, then go back in time and choose one of the other races just to confuse his opponent.
It's completely ridiculous and I'm really bad at it.
There's almost no point in caring about the Terminator series when you realize that John Connor can't actually even be John Connor.
>>291225996
>>291226178
I'm pretty sure in the new movie they are just taking a bunch of shortcuts and using CG instead of makeup.
Also, let's not forget that Stan Winston died right after working on T4. He was a master of practical creature effects, and his work is part of what made even the bad Terminator movies special. The new movie does not have him and it shows.
Hell, even the TV show had better makeup effects than the new movie. Their low budget forced them to employ a lot of the same techniques Stan Winston used in the original two movies, and they got people who were passionate about doing makeup the old fashioned way to work on it. The new film makers grew up in the CG generation where you just slap a motion tracker on someone's face and have the computer people do the rest, and they don't even have the budget or resources to do it convincingly.

Yeah but SKynet made itself from a chip the First Terminator left behind when it died and there's no indication a Convergent Engineering feat would create something exactly like the original Skynet if they tried (Especially since they blew up Cyberdyne).
Skynet as it was shouldn't still exist.
>>291226923
It's not even that. If time in this universe is a line that can be changed then the John Connor we see in T2 and those further in the series can't be the real John Connor. Since Kyle Reese was sent back in time by John then the original had a different father. By sending Kyle back in to protect(and fuck) his mother, the real John Connor pretty much ends his own existence and is replaced by a different person with the same name.Skynet won

Prosthetics and puppets are actually there in the shots, while CG is merely an image. Plus, while I don't know for sure, I like to imagine acting in a movie with CG is harder on the actors, since they need to pretend something is really there, instead of in older films where they can actually see the damn thing.

3 was so fucking horrid, it's hard to compare. Arnold should have never been involved. It should have been some bizarre divergent timeline where the T-1000 and the T-X fight each other instead. That would have been a much more interesting battle. The final battle between the two at the end would have had the T-1000 dropping all pretenses of appearing Human, and becoming some shrieking liquid metal horror.

I think my favorite moment with Achron was when I was in a 2v2 game.
I noticed that my ally was attacking one of our opponents, but my army was, at that moment, faffing about somewhere else.
So, I went back in time about a minute or so, gathered my army and timed it so that we could tear his base apart from two different sides.
Then there's also the super weapons of the three species. The Humans just have a standard nuke, the Vecgir (bipedal insect aliens) have a nuke that, shortly before hitting the target, teleports towards it and the Grekim (weird... things) have a nuke that sends all enemy units in the target radius 30 seconds into the future which is HILARIOUS.

They actually got that idea from a Terminator novel written by S.M. Sterling. In it the female Terminator was more biological and had more humanity so that she could use her femininity to infiltrate, seduce, and lower people guards. No built in weapons and liquid metal skin though. She was really just a terminator who could think more like a human. She was still tough though because they mess her up pretty bad, but her robotic components keep her going.

The franchise still has legs, the problem is that the people making the films are absurdly incompetent and don't understand what audiences like(d) about the franchise.
3 was a pretty good example of why the new-model hollywood action film style shouldn't be rammed into older franchises and the general lack of creativity and banking on nostalgia that typifies most reboots these days.
However, 4's interpretation of the end war, compared to the original scenes pretty much the perfect representation of how badly hollywood is missing the point right now and trying to make transformers/superhero movies at every opportunity, no matter the source material.
Also, McG.

Calling salvation a terminator war movie would be like calling a guy dancing to gangnam style a historical reenactment of the charleston.
Nothing about the movie's atmosphere, plot, characters, scope etc. has anything in common with the original scenes filmed by Cameron. The end war is supposed to be about humans hanging on by their nails to survival of the species and trying to fight with scavenged weapons and hide in tunnels from relentless, towering tanks.
Salvation was essentially a Z grade CGI fest mix up of mad max film with transformers.
I don't see how anyone could possibly think that it was a decent representation of Jameron's original vision, let alone a good terminator film or action movie.
>>291232579

The third film has a lot of faults, but this is not one of them.
By stopping skynet in the 90s, they only postponed the development of an AI program that could control America's nuclear program and if anything, they made skynet much stronger thanks to the vastly advances in computing and robotic tech since the 90s.
They kind of fucked in calling the new system skynet though, but I guess the name is cool and brand recognition and all of that.
Also, why the fuck would a rogue AI that escaped onto the internet decide to destroy all of the computers and infrastructure that make the internet possible? Wouldn't it want the meatbags to keep maintaining and growing the internet as much as possible to improve its computing power?
>>291222414
Other people have pointed out some dumb things about Looper, but one I rarely see people bring up is the fact that the timeline Bruce Willis was from never had a Bruce Willis on the run, so no one ever killed the kid's mom trying to kill him, so he would have been raised normally. That's the point though. If it's in a secure location as a physical construct then it has a reason to protect itself. As the internet it's pretty much killing itself through nuclear annihilation. Not to mention Skynet like everything else in terminator is a pardox, it created itself through giving Dyson technology from the future. >He'll probably just sit on it forever. Won't be soon since he's making at least 3 Avatar movies first.
I would be OK with James Cameron just sitting on the rights. If he intended for it to be finished after T2, then I will be happy to see the rights back with him where no-one can screw with his baby again.
On the other hand though, deep down I want to see what James Cameron's version of Terminator 3 would have been like. I have no idea if he'll ever make it, but part of me can't help but imagine that he's got a script hidden away somewhere and he's just waiting for all the pieces to fall into place. Maybe he's even waiting for a director he can trust to do it for him while he sits in the producer's chair.

Paradoxes are what make time travel fun.
>>291217134
I agree, but I really liked Radiant Historia.
>>291236952
Chrono Trigger was a great game, but the time travel was a mess. So many plot holes and conflicting explanations.
>>291230834
They might as well had just brought back Edward Furlong again if they were going to cast someone that ugly. It's not like he's doing much these days.

Honestly, cloning Quarrich is the only thing that could get me interested in the sequel. He was the only character in Avatar that I felt like rooting for by the time it was over, because he is a certified BAMF who gives zero shits. Jake was a race traitor, and the entire battle at the end was his fault because he completely forgot to do his fucking job (which was to politely suggest to the Na'vi that they relocate).

Apparently his endoskeleton got arthritis, also.

Nah. He actually wrote T2 with a more conclusive ending, but the theatrical version of the movie ended up with a vaguer ending so they could milk out the series. Cameron only allowed T3 to be made so that Arnie could've a paycheck, but he basically treats the post-T2 movies as fanfic.

You made a mistake not watching it in full glorious IMAX 3D when it came out. Who gives a shit about the copy pasta story, it's the most visually stunning movie ever created.
>>291224959
T3 at least had a good ending, and we finally got the "future" Terminator movie people have been asking for (turns out, we didn't know what we really wanted).

The kind of actor you get when half your budget was spent on bringing back a geriatric Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Seriously, after this movie I'd better not hear any of you shits complaining about Harrison Ford in Star Wars Episode VII again. Seeing him as a 30+ years aged Han Solo is already lot more convincing than whatever bullshit they came up with for why Arnold Schwarzenegger is still playing an ageless cyborg 30 years later.

Days of Darkness
Even though you don't actually do the time travelling shit it's a smart idea

I understand why they can't hire this guy because he's a junkie.
But why no linda hamilton?

EYE has no time travel.
It's just Groundhog Day

I'd like to see them just branch out and do other stories in the universe using different characters. Nothing about Terminator says that you always have to focus on John, Sarah, and Arnie. But I suppose that's not how Hollywood works. Side story stuff would work better in comics, games, or TV shows for something like Terminator.
Any movies will always be compared to the originals or considered reboots.
>>291237372
Do you really want to see Quarrich go out like a bitch against sully for the next however many sequels?

I don't really give a shit about sick graphix in my movies.

They should have just said this Arnie was the human the previous Terminators were based off of or something. Nothing in the old movies or any EU has ever said dick about aging.

History abhors a paradox.
Therefore, Legacy of Kain series.
>>291237760
No...
>Raziel, you must understand, our presence here doesn't alter history. You and i meet here because we are compelled to, we have always met here. History is irredeemable. Drop a stone into a rushing river, the current simply courses around it and flows on as if the obstruction were never there. You and I are pebbles, Raziel, and have even less hope of disrupting the time-stream. The continum of history is simply too strong, too resilient.
>>291238009
That would have been so much easier. There was even a (non-canon) bonus scene on the T3 DVD where they suggested that the 101 model was based off of a US Army officer. If he was still alive in the future then he'd be a grizzled old man, and that would have been a lot more believable.
Hell in T3 they actually used digital makeup to make Arnold look younger like he did in T2. I know the movies never stated outright that the terminators' exteriors do not age and deteriorate, but seeing the terminator as a fairly constant character throughout the series was always cool. He's supposed to be a machine and I don't want to see him as an old man.
>time travel movie
>protagonists don't just travel to an alternate universe where the thing they're looking to solve has either already been solved or never occurred and their counterparts in that universe have just died
>>291238315
Maybe I was tricked by the use of higher vocabulary in every other sentence, but LoK really does feel like the closest thing to a novel-like story in vidya while still playing completely like a game.

She didn't want to come back to T3 because how hard it was to get into Sarah shape. And I think she didn't want to deal with the franchise anyways being Cameron's ex. I know he wasn't really involved with 3 but it was probably a memories thing.
Plus, they wrote this for a young Sarah so they can get Thrones girl in there. It was beyond obvious they were going for lazy free publicity when they announced both a GoT star AND a Doctor Who star.
>>291216356
But terminator did it terribly. In the first it was a self closing loop, in the second they altered the timeline. They changed the rules between the movies to suit the narrative. That's horrible writing
>>291238417
This new movie would have been even better if he was literally Sgt Candy from that deleted scene. Biggest tragedy for T3 was it's removal.
>>291237667
In the new one, Skynet sent a Terminator further back to kill Sarah as a child, and the resistance sends a T-800 back then to save her. Her parents die, and the Terminator acts as a surrogate father and raises her. That's the justification for old-ass Arnie in this one. It's dumb, since then it just opens up the question of why Skynet doesn't just keep sending Terminators further and further back to eliminate members of the Connor family tree, ensuring future ones aren't born, or born in a way that doesn't impede Skynet's takeover.
>>291238571
Eh, we don't know if it was a closed loop as they never actually discuss time travel's rules outside of the physical requirements and some stuff in TSCC. It's pretty much guaranteed to be a mess.
>>291238894
This whole movie is going to be one big fustercluck on the Terminator mythology. I don't even know if it can be considered canon at this point. As an anon above said, the rights for the Terminator franchise revert back to James Cameron in 2018 due to some IP law, so whatever random ass studio currently has the rights is just shitting out the most spectacularly retarded Terminator film they could think of to make a quick buck.
The only reason I will watch this film is just to see how bad it is. It will be torrented, of course, because I don't want to reward the mentality that produces shit like this. And I will have to have a lot of beer.
>>291238315
That doesnt make sense seeing as he's the biblical Kain and could have removed entire empires from the pages of (in-story) history. He's an immortal of great and terrible power. If you kill one man maybe another replaces them, but what if a fledgling Damascus, Athens, or Rome is just purged from the map by a being with nearly infinite materials, manpower and knowledge? What if you kill every pharaoh and force the Egyptians to stop believing in their gods in 3000 BCE?
>>291228659
Why is HIS HEAD SO BIG.
>>291231261
Don't quote me on this as this is the first I'm learning of this movie being made, but that dude is probably Kyle Reese because he's wearing the same outfit Kyle had from the original movie.
