Jesus fuck mate, your mother should have aborted you at birth so I wouldn't have to see this image.
Please never pursue a job as a city planner. Or work in any kind of job involved with traffic. Or drive.
Just go lie down.
So this.... is what the future will be like...... Amazing...
>>287446196
Explain what is wrong with his roads.
am I doing it wrong if I put down nothing but big one way roads and make everything square grid like?
I know it's sort of boring but feels better than doing weird shapes or having traffic in both ways

>>287446990
One way roads make services a bit of a pain.
I was building a city where everything circulated counter-clockwise until I got tired of the firemen being terrified of using their sirens.
Realistically one way roads are completely unnecessary for proper traffic management.
And that is why you dont put roundabouts like an autist
>>287446915
>rotary without a reasonably placed overpass for direct passage
>large cluster of T and 4-way intersections resulting in the slowdown of traffic
>weird as fuck and arbitrary under/overpasses
>two lane rotaries
>>287445824
Shit son, if you're going to make a mess, at least make a functional mess that doesn't get bogged down with traffic.
when do you start feeling the need for elevated highways? I'm still doing everything on ground level, and I really don't see a reason to use them, I mean I just make small clusters of self sufficient units and it's citizens don't need to mingle in other areas
also I have a shit ton of garbage disposals in every corner of the city with a decent budget rate and I still keep getting tweets about the garbage piling up in people's places.

>>287448770
Did you ever place parks or attractions? Those kill commercial demand.
>>287448770
If you have lots and lots of parks they will destroy commercial demand. The devs said they have figured out the problem and are working on an actual fix because the mod just kind of brute forces a fix.

>>287448013
I fucking lost it at the police chase
>>287448770
I have read in several other threads that there seems to be a bug about commercial demand not going up at some point etc.
Not sure myself, but someone said that the devs are aware and working on a fix themselves.
>>287448770
Some people have a bug where parks and such will make commercial demand stop working. I had plenty of parks and trees and never ran into it, but it's pretty widespread.
>>287448926
>>287448947
That's strange. I placed loads of parks in order to raise land value and was able to keep commercial going the entire game.
>>287445824

This should free up the round about and get traffic flowing again.
>>287448956
>>287448310
most of the time, you don't and ground ones are fine, but if you're doing something in an area that's really dense, like you want to break up a local road network/grid for a highway, you can just run it overhead. It's mostly a space-saving thing.

it's the wild west
some areas are great because you can side-street your way through, while others are bottlenecks
I'd imagine if you're stuck in a grid-based road system, it equals the playing field in terms of traffic
in Boston, if you know where a certain side street will dump you but the other car doesn't, you can take advantage of itthe best is when you roll the dice since you're not sure if a certain street will take you where you wanna go or just turn back on itself and actually end up finding a shortcut

Amazing driving AI. 3 lanes available, everyone is stuffed into 1. As usual. And as usual there will be people trying to defend it.
>>287463361
I still haven't figured out why the driving AI does what it does.
Sometimes it uses lanes properly and sometimes it doesn't, in my experience. It's baffling, especially coming from the people who developed some of the only detailed public transport simulation games on the market.
>>287463361
More often than not, everyone in these threads actually complains about that very problem with traffic. Instead of using available lanes to their fullest, they take whichever route requires the least deviation/lane changes. Would be nice to see it relaxed a bit and have traffic change lanes to avoid stopping.
>>287457418

>>287463517
This is how I figure it works.
If the car wants to turn right and immediately ahead there is a turn to right, it will stick to right lane.
If the car wants to turn left and immediately ahead there is a turn to left, it will stick to left lane.
If the car wants to go forward and immediately ahead there is NO turn to left, it will stick to left lane.
Otherwise, it sticks to middle name.

Orthographic, not isometric.
And for some reason orthographic works okay with isometric views, probably because your brain still kind of gets tricked into thinking it's perceiving a vanishing point. But with the shifted angle that SC4 uses, it breaks that illusion and suddenly the lack of actual perspective is obvious and it makes you feel like you're looking through a telescope at a tiny portion of a much bigger scene and it feels very uncomfortable, claustrophobic even.

The terrain is modelled similar to terrain in my area. There's a large mountain range and then almost nothing but small hills and plains. The running water shouldn't be an issue, as there's plenty of it coming from the mountains. The priority was usable building space and a stream to dam. If you have issues with flowing water, there are also water towers to build. just don't be retarded and put them next to industry/polluted soil.
The game should have a system where people can vote on parts of your road systems to determine how 'the public' views your roads; confusing or easy to understand
If they're confusing It causes a lot of car crashes
>>287468216
Why have a voting system? Why not just have areas of moderate to high traffic become more prone to accidents like SC4 did?

Oh fuck, so that's why my oil industry just chrashed out of nowhere.
Hotfix release when?
My entire industrial district is suddenly dying.
Why?!
For those of you having traffic problems, take a look at my city. You need a hierarchy of roads--freeways, then 6 lane roads, then 4 lane, then 2 lane.
Also, you should almost always use roundabouts to hand on and off ramps to/from freeways.

getting rid of the loop-de-loop might be a good first step.
Thanks OP I haven't laughed this hard is ages.
>>287474623
Too few workers. This tends to happen when your population becomes too educated. Everyone wants office jobs and quits their shit industry job.
>>287474312
It's okay.
The way the game is structured (even with the unlock everything mod enabled), the devs seem to have had a narrow view of what they think everyone should be aiming for when playing a city building simulator, so there is a very clearly defined progression that they intended and it's presented in a very gamified way, and it's kind of hard to really produce anything but the kind of city that the devs had in mind for you to build (big, fully "successful", clean). It's much morevideo gameythan, say, SimCity 2000, which was intended more as a "build whatever kind of city you want, it's a simulator, go nuts" kind of experience.
>>287474024Australia. We have mountains, and then nothing. Lots and lots of nothing.
>>287474623
That city looks pretty damn good anon
>>287448995
Oh shit, this all makes so much sense now. People kept complaining of low house value so I started placing parks all over to make sure everyone is happy and there hasn't been any commercial demand in forever, my industry keeps growing and growing
How scary a game is this to play if one's experience with City Builders literally date to early 90s?

its really easy if you know how not to suck balls, but getting into it requires reading and an elementary education

can't you just import heightmaps?
>>287454924
A few have already started. Check leddit.
>>287475325
So it doesn't drop unfair bullshit onto you like 90% of city builders do?
>>287475403
Getting good heightmaps is very hard. It's even worse if you're trying to get good ones with mountain ranges.
>>287474920
I live in northern Sweden, and forests stretch all over the country. Just imagining a huge fucking flat land of nothing is just scary.
>>287475671
fair enough. getting them to work right in skyrim was a bitch.
>>287475529
No, it's a very fair game. The only difficult thing about it is managing traffic, but that's a learning experience. You make a city, and you reach a point where traffic becomes unbearable, and you can't really unfuck it without trashing half the city.
So you make the next one and fix the problems of the earlier city, only to discover another problem, whereupon you create a third city to solve it.
It's a fun learning experience. I have a crapton more respect for engineers that I used to have.
>>287476015
Yeah. I have gone to classes near drafting classes and I don't envy them. The attention to detail is mindnumbing. I don't think my autism can handle it.
I'm not sure if I should be getting this because I'd get way too hyper analytical. Or is that the fun of it?
>>287476492
That's kind of the fun of it. Building a city and seeing how it evolves. It's a really fun game, and I'm not that much into city simulators myself.
>>287478294
all me :^)
>tfw no slum mod
>tfw no way to rebuild Kowloon Walled City
i feel like this game has many of the same traffic problems as sim city 2013. vehicles don't get out of the way of emergency vehicles, ambulances and police and firefighters respond to calls all the way across town while their local area burns. 99% traffic only uses one lane, even if they're not all turning and the other lanes are going straight as well (but are completely vacant with a huge pile up in one fucking lane!)
>>287479476
>vehicles don't get out of the way of emergency vehicles
This is really annoying.
>99% traffic only uses one lane
But this is a non-issue. It's them all wanting to go the same way and they switch to their correct lane to get out of the way of traffic using the other two lanes. You need to distribute your traffic better.
>>287479651
i'm willing to accept that i'm not very good at traffic, but now i don't understand the point of roads with multiple lanes at all
>>287449071
its beautiful
>>287479739
I can, to some extent, agree that they don't have to merge to the correct exit lane as early as they do, but they will have to eventually, and then they'll just cause a traffic jam in multiple lanes further down the road because of an existing jam in the correct lane. What you need to do is take a look at where all the cars are going and how you can solve it. For example, the default cloverleaf interchange will cause absolutely everyone who's not going straight forward to stick to the rightmost lane because the off-ramps are one-lanes.
In intersections you can actually see the arrows marked on the road for the direction the lanes are used for. This is one of my merges from a highway interchange. After people are out of the interchange, they'll merge to the leftmost of the highway section if they're going left, and further down the line they'll get onto this 6-lane one-way and merge to the two left lanes depending on where they're going next. The people who are in the second lane (left-to-right) are going to turn right in the next intersection, while those in the leftmost lane are going to turn left in the next intersection.
tl;dr hierarchy of roads. Always distribute your traffic nicely until it dissipates, at which point you can use two-lane two-way roads just fine.
>>287457418
Other anon is right. Southeastern cities fucking suck, Orlando is literally just a random fucking assortment of streets.
>>287474181
Mods. Im waiting for it to be the best thing ever, with low density level 1 shit looking really fucking haggard and slummy. With soccer courts, more massive skyscrapers, Jesus christ mark my words /v/ this game will be the best game to come out in 2015except phantom pain lol
>>287479739
>>287480307
Like so. These arrows indicate which lanes they'll stick in for each direction.

I really do hope mods add more dirt and grime and grunge to the game.
The pristine look of it now kind of makes me feel sick after a while. Nothing but pastel cars driving through clean friendly industrial districts and sprawling affluent suburbias.
Also why are there no black citizens?
>>287448013
holy shit, I'm in tears but everyone is sleeping and I can't laugh out loud
Well this worked for a long time but it's starting to get congested now that I've got 70k pop. I'm not quite sure how I'm going to tackle this because of limited land I've got to work with here.
Any of you traffic wizards have any suggestions?
>>287481743
The problem is that because there's 6-lane intersections you get traffic lights. Use two-lane one-way or a highway for the roundabout itself.
>>287481819
Changing them to a highway seems to have made them worse.
I'm prepared to bulldoze the whole area put in something more crazy but again space is limited and the pinavia didn't fit.
>>287482167
Build an overpass highway taking the entrance on the right over the top of the roundabout and connecting straight to the highway on the left at the U turn.
>>287482167
Put an overpass above it so through-traffic can skip the roundabout.
>>287482167
Now you have an entirely different problem. The highways merging onto the roundabout have 90 degree turns which slow them down to like, 30km/h while turning, causing a jam.
An overpass shouldn't be necessary, but it'll make things 10 times easier for them.
