A 1440p monitor has almost the same pixel count, and it's not hard to run a 1440p monitor. I've been running 1600p since I got the WFP3001 in 2009 and never had to SLI or anything.

Now, to be fair, I wouldn't recommend using OR unless you have a chance to use their latest prototype.
DK2 is really nice and all, but it just shows that 1080p isn't enough for VR, since everything is too blurry even then.
1440p is the sweat spot for comfortable VR. 4k will be very nice in a few years.

If Rift comes with headphones, which I doubt it will, they'll just be normal plug in headphones you put into the computer. Basically, you just use headphones as you would normally.

I ironically had the chance to test the OR dev kit 2 a few days ago, which is 1920x1080 divided between two eyes. The tracking is perfect, no complains, didn't even need the LED tracking thing, the gyroscope was ridiculously good, jitter free and reacts instantly, speaking of which, the latency is good enough as well, no noticable delay, no after image or something, perfect. And honestly, I expect the other manufactures to achieve the exact same thing here, you don't need to worry if those were your worries, they got this shit figured out. 60fps was also no problem, framerate was good enough to fool reality, no complaints here.

But.

But that was it, The FOV, while impressive in numbers was still terrible, make the fake binoculars with your hands real quick, then open your hands until it makes a big wide circle, that's the FOV you have on dev kit 2. I'm not kidding. It's bad, I seriously underestimated just how much FOV is needed to not have permanent tunnel vision.

And then there's the resolution.

Oh god.

It's bad, like, gamebreakingly bad. I could count the pixels, even if I didn't focus on them, literally count them one by one. Everything that was more than 1 or 2 meter away in virtual space became a blurry mess. Reading text is impossible unless you run your face into it and it's like fontsize 3000. Everything is a constant blurry mess. I have no idea how they can fix this. If it is THIS bad with 1080, then it'll still be bad at 1440.

And suddenly it all makes sense why older VR goggles had such a tiny fov, because a tiny Fov means a higher pixel density. That's basically the only way they can fix this. They need to let go of the FOV if they want something where you don't want to end your life after 5 minutes, because you got headaches after 2.

And then I tried the rift, I felt like throwing up within 2 minutes after headaches starting to form after 1. You had the sense of movement which was good, in fact I felt a jolt in every direction i took in the virtual world, as if my body expects me to move, but then my eyes would not recognize me moving, instead it's too obvious that I'm at a standstill. And there you go. I was hyped as fuck for all of it, but I'm not any longer.

And while I only had the chance to test the rift, I have serious doubts the other VR goggle manufactures won't hit the same wall. They'll have the exact same problems. Make damn sure you test these things before you spend hundreds of bucks on them. I know I propably won't buy one anymore.
