The original runs at a smooth 60, has some of the best 90's pixel art and a kickass metal/neoclassical metal soundtrack

Didn't warrant a remake in the first place, as it still plays better than every Castlevania released since.

The Metroidvania style games have no challenge whatsoever anymore.
It's all about equipment.
Get a Grim-some shit from one of those flying skulls in the inverted castle in SotN and you can finish Dracula in 10 seconds flat by just standing still and tapping attack.

How is the PSP remake worse? Its the only way to legally obtain the game outside of Japan and contains the original version AND SotN.

It is easily the best Castlevania compilation available.

I agree. Rondo of Blood has no equal. I'm probably the only person alive who doesn't like the whip control in IV.

The stages are the perfect length, the bosses are all interesting, there are multiple paths to take but it's still simple fun, difficult but adaptable..

From a gameplay perspective, I do think Rondo is the best, but I think IV has easily the best aesthetics and atmosphere. The soundtrack is fucking amazing. It's a shame the game is so easy. I enjoyed it as a kid but it doesn't present enough challenge anymore to be enjoyable.

I'm playing through this one right now. It's probably in my top 3 Castlevania games. Just got to the castle and beat that wall boss. Games been kicking my ass but it's incredibly satisfying to play. Art style is fucking amazing too.

You do know that the original resolution of Rondo is insanely small, right? You can't really properly resize a game with hand drawn sprites.

Not saying it doesn't suck, but there ain't much they could have done aside from re-drawning every single sprite to fit the psp proper.

Actually, you can emulate it at 1080p and above, filling the whole screen with 5xBR and a retro filter to get a modern pixel look.
I completed it in this manner again just a few months ago.

The pixels stretch, for hand drawn pixels to properly render at any given definition they have to be drawn to that size.

While I agree it looks better in 1080p, you're still getting the same amount of information you would at any other definition, just more stretched to fit the screen. And yes, filters do alleviate the problem of stretching, just not entirely.

as this seems one of the only decent threads on /v/ now and on the subject of psp remakes, is the tactics ogre for PSP a remake, new game or port?

Port of the PS1 version.
It's been given a similar localization to what FF Tactics: War of the Lions received.
I believe it was done by Alexander O. Smith and his company - the people who did FF9, FF12 and so on.
