That run from SS to SM is still one of my favorite moments because it was fucking spoopy and mysterious when I was a kid, and the conversations were pretty based. Made a lot of friends in vanilla because of all the running that needed to be done.

you wowbabbies need to realize you get this feeling for any mmo you play for the first time. i have this feel with everquest. once you hit that point in the mmo where it becomes a min/max farming game, you're never going back. no new mmo will recreate that feel for you since all you're going to do is skip quest dialog and follow a marker on your minimap and grind as fast as possible. visiting stormwind for the first time with that music hitting your face, taking a flight path for the first time, doing your first instance tanking with a 2hander, joining a party for the first time are just "my first mmo" feels anyone gets for any mmo

I played Vanilla WoW again on a relatively well working private server and while the feeling of going through everything for the first time was not there, the social aspect of the game was almost identical to the old times.

Even if everyone knows what they're up to, there's still a sense of struggle and adventure when banding together with complete strangers and doing quests and raids together, forming stronger bonds.

It's especially great on private servers because the community is a little bit tighter and you'll run into a couple of people you've ran dungeons with a bit more often.


The reason modern WoW is so shit is because it completely lacks the social aspect. You don't have to struggle with anyone because everything is easier. You don't have to be nice to people because you can get in a party with the click of a button. There's no sense of adventure because everything can be teleported to and farmed the fuck out of without any effort.

And I'm not saying vanilla didn't have farming because it had it more than any expac does, but the point is that it's less automated because difficulty was harsher.

You know what finally killed WoW for me?

All the dam loading screens. When I started playing the only time you saw one was when you logged in, entered a dungeon, or changed continents. That's it. It was all one big seamless world, and that was a great thing.

At some point it just became loading screen after loading screen, I blame the group finder.

Hey i actually got the breastplate of the chromatic flight.

I was farming ubrs or whatever for breastplate of valor from final boss. Was farming like a million times.

Then, gyth the dragon when your fighting warcheif rend or whatever, drops some fucking epic crystal or some shit. This is really fucking rare, like 0,002 or less.

I convince everyone its nothing of use and get it. Then you get this long ass quest which takes forever and you have to get a shit ton of items that are a pain in the ass to get.

This didn't happen because the game was better, it happened because you were young and/or new to the genre. Most of the time, as you experience that game and become accustomed to the genre (and also become older and more experienced in general) these things don't happen anymore when you move to a new MMO.

You're right. There are sharp diminishing returns on what we think of as novelty. A new mmo is new, but it's not going to be novel enough from whatever the first one was that you played, be it WoW or Everquest.

In order to get that amazing feeling of wonder and immersion again the game is going to have to be different enough from things you've already experienced. It would have to be novel to an appreciable degree. There is a hardcap on how far even that feeling goes though, as we've all experienced the medium of video games so much. Well, life in general too I supposed. I would be very surprised if there was a new video game made that was such a distinctly magical new experience that it gave people that sense of wonder and rush snapping into your favorite childhood vidya did for the first time.

See I LOVED world PVP when it was semi fair. Like, we'd have 40 v 40 PVE guild vs PVE guild all in raid gear all on VOIP coordinating in massive battles outside of raid instances just because we showed up there at the same time, it was fun as fuck, also we had some amazing world PVP again, PVE raid guilds all showing up at the same time for the same thing, at green dragons and the Scourge Invasion. Very very fun.

I also loved when leveling up in Outlands during TBC I was ganking people I met, I mean we're both leveling up so it was relatively fair, and there were some pure rivalries that grew up out of that.

But nobody was camping, and nobody was just straight up ganking people that couldn't fight back in those situations.

the V in PVP is something I stress. Versus. There's no versus when its a completely one sided fight. That's not PVP that's a PK.

I love PVP, I hate PK.

I tried PK once, I mean I was a druid, I could do it just fine, stealth ganking low level players in Ashvale as soon as they left the protection of the Barrens, or in STV, but you know what? It got boring within oh.. I dunno, 30 minutes. It was slightly more fun to do in booty bay just because of the neutral guards, but still not that fun. The people had no fight in them. Even if I didn't one shot them they just stood there to die or tried to run anyway.

I really did not see what was so fun about the rogue that camped me for 3 solid hours.or the other rogue that camped me in Tanaris until I logged off when leveling up.

It's not really fun at all, it's pitiful that I actually bothered wasting time trying it out.

Ganking is legitimately for scrubs who can't PVP.

I know it's fucked up and buggy, but at least it actually has a sense of community, at least Archangel Horde which, to me, was the most important and fundamental part of WoW in its entirety.

The current game focuses way too much on the lone player instead of making you play as a group and a community.

And granted, some quests, like Lazy Peons, are bugged, but the vast majority of them are absolutely working and I'm sure that if you can look past a few bugged quests you can enjoy it.

If there was one thing Rift did right, it was the lowbies of a decent level could fight back against higher level gankers with some effectiveness. My favorite memory was some max level fucker ganking my lvl40~ saboteur while me and my brother were leveling, so we joined together and ran circles around the dude and ended up camping him. Man, class quests were the shit, I wonder if other classes had quests as fun as warlock's, I remember making an orc shaman once and having to climb a mountain for a totem, but that was it.

For the water Totem to venture to some obscure location in the Barrens, and then fill up a water skin at Tarren Mill. It was a cool trek but nothing special except for sightseeing.

The air totem quest was to find a person in a cave and jump off a bridge.

Warlocks had the coolest quests by far, followed by druids. The quest for the Aquatic form, where you had to travel to different water sources all around Azeroth was fucking ballin' because you had to go to zones you'd never think about visiting in your level.

Especially for Alliance players because you had to trek to Silverpine and swim around the coast and shit. It was all about nature.

removing classes and adding in skills that increase as you use them + high production values = making your own build

people who complain about balance get banned

mobs drop random loot with a chance of magical properties to enhance the character

players team up with each other to accomplish tasks instead of running the same dungeon 20 times for x item so you can be "the best"

people who want to be the "best" at running one dungeon a hundred times to stand around in the new best gear. it makes no sense

devs just have to make not shitty MMOs again like back before 2003. they do right now and people play them but we get threads about WoW instead because its what soccer moms, halo and madden bros and 9 year olds play so theres millions of them

lots of non wow-like mmos simply pit you against the world, and shit is hard as fuck. no auto attack, no push "arbitrarily named attack that does this % + this number" infinitely combat, you just either have the character attributes to take the incoming blows or avoid them or the actual skill to move out of the way, and team up with enough strangers to have a chance to kill whatever it is youre fighting, and the reward is possible RANDOM loot and adventure, and knowing your desperate band of weak mortals accomplished killing the HEROIC monster. not the other way around. does anyone remember asherons call early days? people would beat on things to get their attention then run and others would snipe them, from high terrain, behind gates, debuff the monster, buff other people, use medical kits, heal, snare them, it was an uphill battle just to kill a level 14 enemy because he was a GIANT and you were actually AFRAID to die. death had a PENALTY

You can't buy gold with real money in WoW, for a start, and don't try to ruse me with "b-but goldsellers", it's absolutely not comparable with a built-in, internal, gold selling system like GW2.

Also gear in WoW, at least vanilla, had a big impact on your progression and your efficacity in raids in general. In GW2 it doesn't mean shit.

I feel like a major portion of my nostalgia for this game came from the fact that i was new to it and the community was good and small.
Learning everything and exploring was part of the fun and after 10 years I've seen and done it all and there's no sense of adventure left.

That's not really the games fault. Dumbing it down for a wider audience was though, and that's what i hate the most about the change to the game.
