I figure custom games will come out by the time Source 2 gets released at the end of the summer with the last set of old WC3 heroes being released. I know for sure there's a League port on the Dota 2 engine being developed for Custom Games. i doubt it'll actually see the light of day because C&D lawsuits from riot games but something to consider

Diversity. How important is diversity of races in your fantasy setting? Because personally I get pissed off when I see a plethora of really cool races and the only ones you can recruit all the humans and the "we're not just humans with long ears!" races.

I find it great that you can get a lizard bro in Brave Story but I think the son would have been a cooler addition than the buff father.

Personally I think there's no such thing as an "evil race". Even though all the Skaven you see in the game are enemies, it would be hella rad to hook up with one.

on one hand it's cool to singlehandedly drag a team kicking and screaming to victory.

on the other all it takes is one chuckefuck to ruin 40 minutes of hard work. playing with friends fixes this somewhat but even then Dota's pretty good at testing your friendships to the limit when someone's having a bad day or just being pissy at something for some reason.

the rush of actually doing that "carrying everyone to victory" still keeps me playing even through the bad... that and Doom is a qt, but still.
i like 1v1 games, but Quake Live is dead, there's no active fighting game scene in my area, and RTS games aren't big anymore. SC2 is the still the biggest and SC2 is a fucking chore to play (speaking as a Terran player anyway)
