I think each Smash Bros is a unique experience, they all do something differently, they don't become obsolete with sequels.

What I like about Smash 64 is that the cast is small enough that balance is less of an issue. Obviously you have great characters like Pikachu and meh characters like Samus, but I can pick up and play any character and don't feel like I'm being forced into a tier group.

Smash 64 also has my favorite versions of the original 12. Donkey Kong, Kirby, Yoshi, Jigglypuff, etc. The only exception is probably Luigi, who gets more distinct with each game.

Because, contrary to popular belief, melee players don't dislike brawl and 4 because they aren't melee. They actually dislike those games because they aren't as fun to play once you figure out how the game works.

64 and Melee the fun only goes up as you learn the nuances of the engine and the game itself.

Brawl and 4 give a "well, that sucks" feeling as you learn more about it.

No, all that would do is make the already top-tier characters even better. Characters like Diddy and Sheik can already chase you with little effort, this would make that even easier and near-impossible for you to escape. 5 frames of hitstun isn't going to magically create combos when half the cast's moves have 20 frames of lag and can't be followed with anything anyway because there's too much knockback.

Meanwhile the lack of airdodges in 64 leads to some crazy shit you can pull off with the proper spacing and openers. That game has combos unlike any other game in the series, and I love it for that.

64 is debatably just as campy as either of those two games for the exact opposite reason, because defense is so shitty and punishes are so extreme that people don't approach because they don't want to overcommit. Melee probably strikes the best balance in this regard because the risk-reward ratio for approaching is more even and even there you have outliers (Armada's Young Link vs. Hbox's Jigglypuff).
