I'll start with a hidden gem.
Sprite work is terrible, game is incredibly sluggish to start and even when it does it doesn't get that much better, the moving and positioning is fun until you realize that it doesn't work on any important fight which makes the fairy bitch completely useless, the time travel mechanic is complete ass and switching timelines to get help from the other timeline often doesn't make any sense at all.
You first, OP.

Yeah, hidden gem thread. If you want to talk about The 2 hour Order, How much halo is for kiddies, how pc is le mustard race etc. you are free to leave.4/10 made me reply
This game was a unique experience. Mixing some STG mechanics with an RPG + have some real time elements there = perfect.
Also the fact that your character could permadie was great.
Baten Kaitos and Baten Kaitos: Origins.

>>284213532
No, not really.
>>284212602
That game looks awesome. I just listened to some of the soundtrack and watched the opening cut scene thing.
>>284210947
>fairy bitch
You meant Aht? Pretty sure her traps work on every single boss except the final boss because there's no space to put them. And even then she has other skills she can use. Not optimal but not "completely useless".
As for everything else, pull the stick out of your ass.
>>284211097
>>284211326
For a game centered around time travel, there are almost no plot holes. Once you do a stage in a sidequest, you don't need to go back and do that step ever again, since "True History" reads as you having done that along the way.
Almost all of the characters get fleshed out, with the exception of maybe one, and sidequests are used to get characters extra skills.
Gameplay is very easy to get into, but also requires a lot of thought. Switching turns around leaves your character(s) vulnerable but also potentially sets you up for huge chain attacks, which gives a solid tradeoff. 99% of the bosses can be afflicted by poison, so buy a lot of poison wings.
>>284213470
Just don't get enough party member betrayals in games

>>284214135
Theres like 2 or 3 bosses where her traps don't work, but even without them she is still one of the best party members for building up combos.

It at the very least a legitimate opinion. ATL2 is great
>>284217131
>Lost Odyssey
>God tier
Not even close. Lost Odyssey was the biggest case of "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU THINKING" in any RPG ever.
Lost Odysseys story is comically bad. Even by JRPG standards it's below shit like FF8s "we grew up together but forgot".
But the puzzling thing is, the short stories in the game are absolutely fucking amazing. They are without a doubt some of the best (if not the best) writing in any video game ever. But they're just fucking short stories you can read and nothing else.
Why the fuck didn't the developers get the person who wrote those short stories to write the main story for Lost Odyssey? If they'd have done that, the game would have been the best JRPG ever.
>>284217472
the final boss theme made up for all of the game shortcomings
ive never jizzed so much to a music track in my life but holy shit that was fucking incredible
>>284217859
I thought the main story was pretty forgettable, but to me the worst offender was the fucking slow as shit combat.
I think the only game I've ever played with slower combat is Xenosaga.
i've never heard anyone talk about this game at all, it's probably one of the best ds rpgs ever made.
Shame it's only the saiyan saga, i'd love a whole series of these games that covers all the sagas
>>284218070
The combat wasn't amazing, but it wasn't bad either. Having that circle you had to press at the right time got annoying though.
But seriously, the developers went out of their way to hire an award winning, world famous writer to write for them. Then all they had him do was write a collection of short stories. The fuck where they thinking when they decided this?
>>284218070
The combat, and more importantly the load times before every battle were what killed it for me. The game had load times worse than most PS1 rpgs.
>>284212164
I'll fucking buy it from you for 20 bucks if you hate is so much
>>284212052
Grandia was a spiritual successor to Lunar games and I would rather recommend those instead.
>>284212052
First disc was amazing. Second disc sucked. Not only did the story go from "I want to adventure!" to "an ancient evil has awoken", but the 2nd disc just turned into a fucking chore to play. Dungeons were massive and full of monsters that took ages to kill.
Even though it had a combat system which does not deserve the name, I still love Gothic I and II
>>284211593
I can never categorize Vagrant Story. It sure as fuck ain't a straight up JRPG, that's for sure.

>>284211548
Brilliant game. But that starting chapter and the sheer effort it takes to recruit characters made it a serious pain in the ass to play.
The starting chapter just seemed to take hours and wasn't fun because you had little control (and it was a fucking escort mission).
Recruiting characters was a pain because they had daily routines, and you'd have to sit around waiting for 20+ minutes to be able to talk to these characters (and skipping forwards was not an option due to it making certain characters missable, including the best characters in the game).
>>284210676

It's a straight downgrade from FFT, a massive one
>more jobs, but they are much less unique
>less interesting skills/combos despite there being like five times the amount of jobs
>dumbed down core mechanics like elevation-based dynamic range
>almost every melee has ranged skills
>equipment interface withholds information from the player, need to go back and forth through several menus to get all the information of what an item does
>no try-it-on equipment option for no reason whatsoever
>game flow is twice as slow for no reason, this is especially bad since the SRPG genre is slow by nature
>completely devoid of difficulty
>a billion uninteresting sidemissions that are MMO-tier
>embarassing story considering the previous entry
>grinding equip-specific points is actually worse than the JP system, they managed to made this even worse than the original

It's the only non-shit JRPG on nintendo systems since the SNES era, so nintendrones who only own nintendo systems, have hyped it up to extreme levels.
A similar thing happened to Golden Sun. A shallow 6/10 game at best was hailed as a masterpiece because there were no other JRPGs on the system.

Good "RPG" you've got there. No esploration, no good story to make up for the linearity, most basic menu gameplay. What exactly makes it good, other than being one of the few JRPGs on the GBA? Can you pinpoint what's good about it? Graphics? Cool. Everything else is mediocre at best.

You kind of have to if you like the JRPG genre in general, I suppose it's a filtering process.

Nothing cool about that, it was just shit.
>>284224403
Yeah GS's problem isn't so muc that the story sucks. Its the way it is presented. Every dialog section repeats what is said 2-3 times, and is horribly drawn out by all the soulless characters slowly making those "talking" noises accompanied by all the emoticon faces.

xenosaga's a seriously hot mess, and your mileage will vary a lot. it has that quality of being comically overloaded with huge, century-spanning concepts and plots that you will either finding endearing or pretentious depending on your tastes. if you like xenogears-y shit with kooky biblical references and tons of cryptic name-dropping then you will probably be interested.
they do feel more fragmented as products than xenogears, though. music is sparse and environments are crude; gameplay varies from pretty good (3) to worst of all time (2). if you are a big enthusiast of the xenogears school of jrpg plotting, then they'll be flawed gems; if not, they will be total clusterfucks.
skip episode 2 (which sucks) if it gives you the gas to power through episode 3 (which is one of my favorites).
Is Fantasy Life any good? Worth the 45 bucks? I have a hard time playing RPGs these days though, shit sucks.
>>284222007
It's good. The voice acting is great, the art direction is great, the soundtrack is great, it has good emulation support and therefore looks great aswell. The gameplay is accessable and quickit gets old after a while but if you switch up characters its fine
The story itself is "okay", but the setting and the story progression is great. There are some cutscenes in the game but they're directed REALLY REALLY well, like, they are seriously enjoyable
I can understand people getting turned off from the "offline-mmo" style, people heavily overblow it on /v/ especially after Shulk got confirmed for smash, so many people who usually woudln't bother with a game like this try to get into it and get disappointed.
>>284226643
Exactly. That's why I asked if you knew where you were.
>>284225364
Xenosaga is a mess honestly. The first two games are a total chore. The third game is actually pretty great but I can't in good faith actually suggest playing through the other two games just for it, and the game is simply not worth playing if you haven't. You'll have no idea what is going on and no investment in the characters.

You know how Squaresoft/S-E ruins all their good games to pander to shitty audiences, BD included? Now picture Square in a situation of zero pandering and zero jewing, only a pure, genuine, unaltered vision from a director (who later got botched because he didn't do pandering shit and the game didn't market well to the hambeasts, which directly led to FUCKING VAAN AS MAIN CHARACTER FOR FFXII HOLY SHIT)
>>284226709
It can consume a lot of time if you find it entertaining at all, but it's incredibly bland imo. The combat, which is always a big portion of rpgs, is really underwhelming and shallow. The crafting system eventually just turns into a "press 3 buttons and auto-synth" thing and the quality of said craft is pretty fucking random at times.
I wouldn't recommend it for full price.

His character arc was done after ~4 hours, he's just a spectator to everything that is happening, they even said that themselves as the reason he was introduced.

>beginner to jrpgs
Uuuuh. I'm trying to find some more accessable stuff than what the others posted:
-Final Fantasy 10, the writing and voice acting is shit but the story, gameplay and production value is pretty good and easy to digest. Most people were introduced to JRPGs by this so its a nice start.
-Final Fantasy 12, great fucking graphics (emulate it!), a beautiful world, absolutely fantastic cutscenes and voice acting. Gameplay is hit or miss, your party fights almost automatically if you set them up well, but it's still really satisfying to play. Its a matter of taste though after all
People are divided between vanilla and IZJS; IZJS is a japanese rerelease (complete in english though) which streamlines the gameplay a bit, basically you can choose classes now instead of making every character the same.
-A "Tales of" game. Series is well known for its balance of action and strategy in combat, it kind of plays like a RPG-Fighting-Game. Story is always decent but the characters and their interactions are always very good. If you've played one you've played them all, so choose wisely which one to start with.
Xillia is good but very unfinished at some points. Symphonia is kinda dated but one of the most well rounded experiences. Vesperia is kinda overrated but probably the best. Tales of Hearts R for Vita is supposedly really good. Abyss is worth mentioning.
-Xenoblade Chronicles. See >>284226742
-Persona Series. 1 is terrible gameplay good story, 2 is okay gameplay great story, Persona 3 and 4 have decent to good gameplay and decent to good story. 3/4 really start to shine in the roleplaying-department. Great experience if you dig otaku fantasies. Waifushit gets overblown by people who dislike the series

>>284229890
10 was probably my like fourth RPG. I agree with you that beginners shouldn't play it, but not because of Yunalesca or Seymour. They're difficult but doable. I'd argue that its not good for beginners because of the sphere grid. It gives too much control to the player and gives them the ability to screw themselves over.I would know. I did that to myself. I'm at the end of the game trying to fight Sin and can't because Tidus's attacks are doing damage around 300 to 400 range and accidentally had him go down Lulu's route. Kihmahri, Auron, and Wakka are the only characters that do any major damage and Lulu doesn't even know magic attacks that end in "aga" yet because I screwed up.

Its engine is shit, it feels like controlling a turn based JRPG character when you're exploring out of the battles. Hitbox behaviour is that of an autotarget MMO, it's pretty damn shallow and simplistic. I'd say you're victim of the nostalgia. If KH is good as an action game, god knows Nier and Drakengard have got to be 10/10 action games at this point. The new 3d castlevania games also got to be 10/10 action combat if you say KH's combat is good.

the game, to me, was just what I had been expecting out of a game for the entire last gen and then suddenly it was all there in front of me.
all that bullshit and all those lies about "see that mountain? you can climb it" was fucking possible in Xenoblade. the environments are really well put together, and the entire game world is just so intricate. this combined with an okay story (just like anon said, not great but the cutscenes + music make it much better) lends itself to creating a really fucking awesome atmosphere for an RPG.

Do what? It was very clear that unless using an unlock sphere, each character had a set path they were to follow. Not to mention it's pretty clear what roles each character were supposed to fill outside of Kimahri.

But combat in KH games revolves heavily around watching and learning enemy attack patterns and figuring out how to best attack them without getting hurt and learning when to dodge and block when necessary. It has fast paced battles like this that really depend heavily on skill and fast reactions in order to win.

I was not expecting him to have a fucking Gatling Gun.

>>284230865
>There was a thread a while back about this exact situation
That was probably mine...I didn't look ahead on any of the paths to see what is filled with what or even think about what stats characters should be focusing on. And when playing games I've always tried to make characters super balanced anyways which sometimes helps and sometimes hurts depending on the game. I played the game when I was really young and put myself in that position because I just used spheres on whatever was ahead of me and thought it was cool at the time to have characters learn each other's abilities. I didn't think I could screw up so badly and I thought the reason that I could only win boss battles by filling up everyone and every summon's limit guages before the battle was just because they were overpowered and tough. I had no idea that I screwed up horribly until I went back to the game earlier this year.
>>284229498
Being forced to change the MC by your publisher in the first place means it's going to be shit because it taints the original vision.
The
>it's good because they made him invisible, it's a spectator!
is also a pointless argument because if the character was planned to be a spectator from the get-go, it would STILL be better than current Vaan.
Case in point: Ramza. Nothing is ever about him, the story is about war, the nobles, the people, and how Delita changes. Intended like that from the beginning, better than a half assed last-minute adjustment could ever do.
When the publisher intervenes, it's always a trade-off where we get the shit end of the stick because S-E are jews. No matter how much you try and rationalize it. Vaan a shit. I hope you bump your big toe on furniture.
>>284227898

This series in general is amazing. Started on the NES, moved to the SNES, and even had a PS2 game (Metal Saga). Really great art style, and it is one of the few sandbox jRPGs out there. I highly recommend it, especially if you're a fan of Trigun, as the art styles and settings are very similar.
>>284231338
>Ramza is a spectator
>Forms a rag-tag group devoid of allegiance
>Kills Zodiac Braves and ends up defeating God
You're focusing on the wrong part of the story they were trying to tell. Delita, the war, his brothers - they were all plot devices used to show Ramzas personal path.
Delita is what he could have turned into, and without Agrias' and Ovelia's help he would have.
His Brothers show him the error in heartless politics. How destructive it is to worry about yourself instead of doing the right thing. The war is just kinda happening, and is a plot device to drive him through the course of the game.
You got too caught up in the background.
Excellent soundtrack, fantastic story lines and heroic tales. It's all combined to reenact the moment history is made.

>But combat in KH games revolves heavily around watching and learning enemy attack patterns and figuring out how to best attack them without getting hurt and learning when to dodge and block when necessary.
You just described Monster Hunter, except there are weapons with depth, enemies have 50 hitboxes on them, and mastering the game takes hundreds of hours.
And that is not including the finer mechanics such as invincibility frames and guard points.
I believe the Charge Blade alone has more depth and requires a higher skill ceiling than the entirety of the gameplay in any single KH title. For the sake of making one striking comparison about how shallow KH is.
Also, please refrain from referencing to bonus/post-game/rare encounters in those games, these difficult battles make less than 1% of the fights in the serie and are almost irrelevant to judge how good the overall combat in a game is.
If the standard gameplay was like that, yes, you had a point.

>Ramzas personal path.
Ramza has no path. He barely even gets shown in the ending, because it focuses on what happens to those around him.
He is the device through which you see how the war happened, much like Vaan, except Ramza is a spectator actually done well and it feels like he was a good pick for the role (due to his status conflict with Delita), unlike Vaan.
>You got too caught up in the background.
Compare the exposition / story of ramza and that of everything else, I think you have quite the alternative defition of what "background" is. We know nothing about Ramza. He does <thing> because he thinks he's right. He never explains ANYTHING at all from his personal point of view, his status conflict is always explained through the comparison of others; he just moves forward, whereas we get ton of cutscenes/exposition/reasons from a variety of other characters, most of them happen off-screen right before/after ramza even gets there
Ramza was a faceless protagonist with the adequate starting point (heir of the most powerful/respected noble family), he of all people led a rebellion, and it allowed to see the point of view of commoners, nobles, and the higher ups, by being a noble, but also a traitor. From his point of view, there is no binary "good" or "bad" most of the times, he is confronted with people with a spectrum of mentalities/ideals that consistently change and cross over.
Vaan is a random kid who gets picked up in a pirate airship because he thinks it's cool so he sticks around for the kicks. As a commoner who has no place in a war, his point of view is seeing only "BAD GUYS" and "GOOD GUYS".
And that's about it.

Had potential, but ended up on a system that couldn't handle 3d action combat.

>>284236879
Beyond all the shit, Evangelion had a couple good things that raised the bar, though.

Hooked on this one. I need to stop training classes and finish the game. Thankfully its not as grindy as 2 was.

Speaking of Xenogears - my favorite theme from the game:

I have this problem with VC2.
The gameplay is pretty good and all, but I get about 10 hours into the game, classes around level 10 or so with some characters getting advanced classes and then I just drop the game.
3 times now I've done this. Does the game pick back up? The beginning was pretty good, but the school atmosphere has been pretty fucking tiring. I think I stopped in the middle of the contest between classes this time around.

Because modern videogame developers do not work to provide top-end quality for the consumers, but maximum efficiency and profit for their investors. These two are not the same thing.
So you'll have open world developers making games with shit gameplay, and corridor developers being the only ones having good combat. Simply because if they were to be good in both fields, they'd rather just release two different games and increase the overall profit in the first place, that's why they don't happen.
There is such a thing as a game being "too good" by modern development standards, they even teach you at
>game design school
That you should make your product simplistic, short sighted and derivative, instead of taking too much effort for a single game, because it is not as rewarding as the cash-in.

So I've started playing this on my Vita
I'm not far into it (just beaten some random smoke-ghost boss and escorted 3 performers to a village) but so far I'm pretty underwhelmed...
People talk about how great this game is, but the dialogue is very awkward and the characters have next to no personality. Granted I'm only 2 hours in, but I'm already struggling to motivate myself to go further
Can someone tell me what there is to appreciate about this game? I actually know nothing about this game and just trusted /v/ on this. All I know is that you're supposedly trying to recruit an army of up to 100 characters, which sounds cool in context, but is it really that well implemented? I have no clue how that will play out later on
>>284251612
Both 1&2 take a while to get going/open up. Stick with it, if even after you get your castle and you find getting recruits a chore then just drop it, maybe it's just not for you and that's fine.
Did you play 1 first? 2 has a lot of 1 fanservice.
It is more of a 'classic' style jrpg, with all the pros and cons that come with it.
>>284252196
the older the RPGs are the harder I struggle to get into them, so I just skipped 1 entirely because I've been told that 2 is miles better and other than missing out on fanservice it is still just as good an experience when not having played the first one
So do I actually get to manage my own castle? Get to go on missions to find new recruits? That sounds much more fun than what I'm doing right now, which is frankly utter boredom
Are some of the characters better or are they all just bland archetypes to fill up your ranks?
>>284213376
If you're going to play both, play Lufia 1 first. Yes, 2 is a prequel but it's also better in every way which will make Lufia 1 harder to play. Lufia 1 provides mystery and Lufia 2 answers it.
>>284211673
the chest dialogues are quite funny
>>284211548
FINALLY SOMEONE ON /V/ WITH TASTE!!!
>>284252621
Ignoring the ones you get through the plot, some will join you upon talking to them and others will require you to do stuff
>Are some of the characters better or are they all just bland archetypes to fill up your ranks?
Honestly, most are just archtypes. Since there are around 70 (of 108 in total) characters useable in battle. A number of the ones that aren't are dudes from the first game which is part of the reason why I asked. Flik and Viktor, who you'll run into soon, were major characters in the first game for example.
>>284233413

I like to see Pandora's Tower as what Majora's Mask would be if it were an action RPG. Grim, grotesque art style, lots of puzzle platforming, and fantastic fucking boss fights. The music isn't very present in the game but the themes that are used are really memorable.
Great crafting and inventory system, too. And it's also a relationship sim!
