You know, I really fucking hate what Dark Souls has done to developers. Not that it was the first hard game ever, but it was the game that started the "PREPARE TO DIE: HARDCORE EPIC DEATHS EDITION" bullshit that games like Darkest Dungeon are perpetuating. What the fuck is that bullshit they give you when you start the game? Something like: you will die and have to abandon quests and run from battles? Fuck you. There's a difference between a game being legitimately challenging and forcing me to git gud (like Dark Souls) and a game *literally* deciding that it's going to generate a map that's impossible for me to complete (like Darkest Dungeon). Making your game hard is like a fucking meme now.

Reminds me of the Long War mod for XCOM where the mod developers thought it was a good idea for maps to be capable of randomly generating impossible alien combinations. Except in that case, it was >doing it for free mod developers instead of the actual game devs.
>>
>>283945842
Nah m8, you just need to git gud.
Also that Long War feature you're so salty about is meant to force either a retreat or sustain losses. Not that it matters as it's part of a longer campaign.
>>
>>283945842
That shit's being spouted because games that don't hold your hand are resurfacing during a casualized era. I don't have a problem with games that expect you to be smart enough to figure it out on your own, but I will agree with the "YOU WILL DIE" as a selling point being aggravating.
>>
>>283946608

I'm all for games that don't hold your hand but why the fuck do they make such a huge deal out of it? Like, why is it literally a marketing feature that the game is slightly more difficult than others?

I'm not complaining about games being difficult, I'm complaining about developers misinterpreting what difficulty actually is. If I made a game - let's say it's a platformer for simplicity's sake - where your character had a 25% chance to instantly die every time you jump, would that be a "hard" game? Objectively yes, it would be a difficult game to complete, but having that difficulty does not add anything to the game. In fact, it takes away from it by adding frustration and removing gameplay. Dark Souls is a difficult game, but it's a healthy difficulty, where the player learns from mistakes and progresses based upon their own skill. When you triumph over a boss in Dark Souls, it's because *you* learned the encounter well enough to defeat the boss. For a moment, you forget the frustration of all your deaths when you triumph over a difficult encounter. It's a great feeling.

Conversely, I don't feel like I accomplished shit when I complete a dungeon in Darkest Dungeon. Whether I succeed or fail it doesn't seem like I did anything particular to get there. The gameplay is so shallow that there actually isn't a lot of room for player skill or correct decision making. Roguelikes should always have a healthy amount of RNG, but the keyword there is "healthy". In most situations, this means that the random elements are grounded to a fixed, non-random foundation that the player can build off of. A good example of this would be something like the growths in Fire Emblem; random, yes, but since the unit will always have the same base stats and stat caps and there are stat increasing items, you can work around a bout of bad luck because the game gives you tools to work with. In Darkest Dungeon, everything you do besides movement has an element of chance attached to it. Even mechanics such as relieving stress (which should be fixed) have random elements crammed into them at every opportunity possible. That doesn't make a game difficult, it makes a game irritating.
>>
It's mildly entertaining at the start but it really becomes increasingly boring since it's so repetitive.

And no a few token enemy changes doesn't really change that.
>>
>>283946430
>Also that Long War feature you're so salty about is meant to force either a retreat or sustain losses
Yea, no shit that's what it's for. The point is that it's fucking retarded, and he's right. Why is it okay for the game to randomly decide whether a map is winnable or not? It wasn't like that in the original game because the developers wanted to make a game that was actually fun and not some meme bullshit about a REALISTIC ALIEN INVASION SOMETIMES YOU LOSE LOL

While I can see being annoyed by it I can see why. Heals in this game are used to prolong the dungeon crawl, not outright full party heal. I'm not sure how they could fully balance it.

They should have put in an in game reason like "The gods only have so much power to give, and will only grant it in the heat of battle when you need it the most"

I still don't see why people like >>283945249 and >>283945842 and >>283947549 say the RNG makes the game unbeatable. If you back the bare minimum supplies maybe. I've always made sure to pack an extra stack of food and at least 1 of each item to "cure" the interactables in that specific dungeon. The money spent for this is negligible as you normally end the mission with twice as much gold. You plan for the worst each time. I've had times when I got crit multiple times to my whole pary and still recovered. Even just upgrading your armor once makes the game too easy I feel.

There are better things to complain about in this game. Like hunger being random even after just eating and lack of a turn order screen.

Where the game legit can be impossible due to RNG never giving you enough time to fully explore and kit out your ship.

>>283945842 said
>and a game *literally* deciding that it's going to generate a map that's impossible for me to complete (like Darkest Dungeon).
Take note of the "impossible to complete"

>>283947549 basically says RNG can make you lose without any control which I contest.

So yes they basically did say that the game can randomly become unbeatable.

RNG in this game tends to make things harder or easier, never outright put you in a fail state unless you yourself set it up for that. Don't get me wrong, there can be ALOT of bullshit with the RNG in this game and I admit it can be heavy at times, but honestly the hardest part is the first couple of dungeon runs until you unlock everything in the town. Once you upgrade your healers spells once and get one level of armor your survival skyrockets.

It still needs some balancing. I feel the speed/turn order is the biggest issue as its inconsistent.

I mean, it's pretty dank. I'm having fun with it even though my only good heroes got wiped out by a boss and I almost lost everything. On a side note, some the RNG in this game is ridiculous. The Hag Witch or some shit. The one who puts one of your dudes in the cauldron. I kind of fucked myself back when I started the game by upgrading the wrong things in town, and then I didn't level up a party good enough to actually deal enough damage to her, even if she didn't steal on person every time I had a full rotation. I'm going to keep playing this run as long as I can, but next time through I'm going to plan it out a little better. I also had a foolish attachment to party members and quickly realized that trying to keep people with quirks who were insane was not really worth it. I also didn't get a healer for 8 weeks after my original one died.
>>
>>283955861
I didn't even know that you could do that inside of battle...
>>
Game could use a complete overhaul, keep the art assets but replace the linear luck/grind gauntlet with choices, resources, tactical decisions, skill-checks, opportunities to use party skills out-of-combat. The success should depend on the player's choices, not the generation dungeon layout, hunger event, and the miss/hit roller.
