As far as Halo is a shitty series past 2, Reach was kind of okay. It was a shitty console shootan but it was probably the best consoles could get.

Despite all the shit it gets, Reach was the bomb, and probably had the best campaign out of any Halo game. MP wasn't perfect and I feel like the armor abilities kind of detracted from the classic, bare gameplay.
The fact that this is what Bungie left the Halo series on made me really excited for Destiny too. And then Destiny came out. Hopefully it was just one bad egg and isn't indicative of the future of the studio.

I was 16 and playing it co-op, so I wasn't caring/paying attention about the characters knowing that they all die anyway.

To some extent, but if something is necessary to understand what is and isn't correct about parts of the lore, then it shouldn't be in a journal, it should be in the game itself.
