At the end of the year, if they have taken too much money they give that extra back as a tax return. No it actually is. When you get a job you're able to choose your number of allowances. At 25% income tax a single allowance is worth about 3800 dollars of your taxable income. So if you do the math you could pick the allowances that give you the smallest non-negative return and in turn give you larger pay checks every month. A big return means you were retarded. You're allowed to decide how you announce your taxes. They are 100% based on your final years income. Hourly employees w/ changing shifts don't know what they'll make.

You can set it so the government takes $0 out of each paycheck and at the end of the year you owe 100% of the taxes for the year. Or you can let the government take some money out of each paycheck and at the end of the year you either get back what they overcharged you or you have to pay the difference of what they undercharged you.

Or I work at an hourly rate and travel for a living. I have no idea if I'm going to the east coast or west coast or exactly how many hours I will work. I am guaranteed 40 a week but will get somewhere between 50-70 a week (not actually working but sitting in an airport or something). I am extremely good at math and the best estimate I can come up with is like a $6000 window.
