I think it has more to do with API's.
DirectX is cancer due to its distribution method. If it was often updated without changing system it wouldn't hurt but when most users used 9.0c for years even though there already was 10 and 11 out, and though they've had hardware that supported them - there is something wrong with the distribution method.
If they'd opt for linux instead, DX would be much less popular in favour of OpenGL and similar.

For some companies, success breeds stagnation. Just look at nintendo during the wii years. They were the biggest they've ever been and printing money hand over fist, but I'd argue we saw less quality games from them compared to the gamecube years, and they weren't nearly as big. IMO it's because they were actually fighting to get every last customer and were pulling out all the stops. But when they were successful, they didn't need to give a shit
