the games suck shit. thats the problem. they fucking suck shit with 0% innovation. look at Starcraft 2. what is the difference between SC1 and SC2? nothing-- just nicer graphics and new units. that is 0% innovation mah niggas ya feel me? blizzard didnt add anything new to a game that was developed in the 90's-- no cover system, no moral, no modifiers to accuracy-- nothing doggy, just the same way it was in '98 but with shittier units and nicer graphics. fucking table top warhammer 40k is more dynamic

http://www.cnet.com/uk/news/video-game-industry-struggles-to-grow-a-year-after-new-console-launches/

> In a bright spot for the industry, the spending trends over the Internet continue to favor a disc-less world of downloads. Spending on titles and additional game add-ons over the Internet surpassed $1 billion last month, a 23 percent increase over last year that was helped largely by Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, according to competing industry watcher SuperData Research.

>>
Not surprising.

Not only has there been less games released this year, but the quality of them has been lower. A lot of them have been rehashes or ports too.

On top of all of this, we have publishers constantly lying about games and decreasing consumer trust. We've got developers releasing buggy games, games that have been butchered before released so the removed content can be readded as DLC, and on a few occasions we've literally had unfinished games that took over a month to fix released.

When business practices like this become common, people are naturally going to become very wary of spending money.

The big 3 and volvo have enough cash and a strategy to weather the storm.

Big publishers would have the largest losses but some can take the punch (EA and Ubisoft probably will survive, though much smaller than they are now).

But the smaller studios ( ie Gearbox, CD Projekt) and indies who are gonna get stuck in the rain and likely wiped out.

AAA studios have become bloated, blind monsters.

Developer teams used to be small and tight; they shared a vision and all strove to see that vision through. Nowadays developers have hundreds of people, all of them with their own little agendas and only concerned with pushing their own little pet projects and no guiding direction except for the suited corporate bloodsucker merchants above them clamoring for how WE WANT THE GRAND THEFT CAWADOODY WITCHERIM 5 AUDIENCE!!! MAEK A GAME LIKE THAT

I bet working at a major developer is a lot like a Dilbert cartoon, where everyone specializes in not doing anything and passing the buck around for not doing shit. I can just imagine entire weeks at Blizzard HQ where literally nobody is doing a fucking thing besides eating pizzas and jacking off while WoW just keeps on printing money.

Do any of the big three have anything to worry about? If Microsoft Game Studios goes down under, Microsoft can always fall back on Windows and PC. Nintendo could always return to its toy-making roots and live by selling toys, figures, merchandise, etc. of their IPs. Sony still has its entire movie division and can live off of that.

Really, the only people I'd say that would need to be worried about a crash are companies like SEGA, Capcom, Square Enix, etc.

Maybe it just has to do with the fact that 2014 was horrible year for gaming, and released nothing of note other than clunky, unfinished, downgraded "AAA" games that attempted to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Maybe people don't want to play $60.00-$100.00 for interactive movies that are made up of 40% day 1 DLC.

Sales are down because there's nothing to buy.

Half the "big releases" this year have been current gen ports of last gen games, HD remasters of games from two gens ago, and sequels of big franchises that are barely changed from the predecessor.

Seriously, how many original games that wasn't one of these got released this year? The only one I can think of that got any major press coverage was Watch_Dogs.

Studios and devs with notable IP's will make it through thanks to nostalgia and children, but barely. This mostly includes Nintendo, and maybe several third-party studios who've had close ties to Sony, such Naughty Dog and SE.

This is probably the last console generation; the next generation is going to go full-cloud/PC, where the second and third-party market isn't safety-bubbled by console alliances. I think it's going to nothing but dog-eat-dog in the foreseeable future. Probably bad for devs but good for us since they'll actually have to put effort into their games now. I suspect even more ass-kissing towards Valve and mobile gaming though.

What a lot of people forget about 1983 crash is that it didn't kill the PC market, that is secret to how Activision/EA suriived the 1983. When Consoles market shat the bed in America, Activision/EA made their bunker in another market to live until Nintendo fixed the console industry.

A crash wouldn't take out the entire vidya industry itself. It would just killed the people who created the bubble or anybody dumb enough to be near the bubble when it pops. Japanese gaming economy was 1000x more stable then what American was in 1980's, which is why Nintendo/Sega took over the industry in 1980's.

I have a question and I'm sure there's some venerable neckbeard on /v/ that can help me answer it:

Should the video game market crash again and considering that PCs are much more caught up in the shit storm now compared to last time, will we see a backlash in hardware development and production as well? By which I mean: If big budget, bleeding edge graphics games take a fall then will graphics card manufacturers suffer as well?

Without big budget games to push graphics then surely sales of the most expensive cards will suffer, in turn development of the most advanced tech will stymie which would ultimately result in an even slower progression of graphical fidelity than even now. Right?

And to put a silver lining on this: If this does come true will we finally see a return to stylistic presentations when being the best at realism isn't viable anymore?

Right here, but I think it's really more of a loop than anything. Games are going to start returning to multiplayer games with tons of replay value and a decent skill cap. The boom of popularity in FPS's and MOBA's were a symptom of this, but online-only console games like destiny only go to further show it's happening. The MMORPG industry is essentially fucked unless they get with the F2P match based style of things. Shit, look at things like Risk of Rain and The Binding of Issac: Rebirth. People just don't want to play a story and then be done with it anymore. They want to shit on other people, or play with friends over and over while only paying once, or not at all.

Most of them, but not all of us; the girls who actually cared about gaming never really supported the SJW to begin with.

Completely agree with you on all accounts though. These devs are chasing an imaginary market with their SJW pandering. It's really not all too different from Nintendo's attempts to reel in casuals with the Wii-U when they all left for mobile gaming. Both were imaginary, short-term markets and not stable sources for long-term revenue.

Because big devs don't see "We hit 1080p and 60 FPS, this is great!" they see "we hit 1080p and 60FPS, tighten up the graphics on level 3, we got plenty of power to spare until this shit is unplayable!"

It's a totally different design philosophy. The visuals in games like those are the main experience, the gameplay is just a vehicle to make the player see flashy screens at the press of a button.

See The Order, where devs INTENTIONALLY aimed for a low framerate but had to increase it so that the game would be at least playable.

>The line between PC and phone is blurring...

I hope not. Way I see it vidya is going 3 ways.

- Traditional console, kid friendly games (Nintendo), though probably on handhelds rather than actual consoles.
- Traditional PC, hardcore gamer oriented FPS/strategy/ etc games, distributed digitally and very much
- Mobile based, casual candy-crush cancer.

There's a polarization taking place and the big losers are going to be the half-breeds like MS and especially Sony who made their money by bridging the gap between "traditional" Nintendo type gameplay and full on PC titles. That business model has now failed as casuals have flocked to even shittier iPhone apps for their gameplay.

This is more or less what happened in 1983. Casuals got bored, dropped the fad. Nintendo stepped in catering to kids, but there were still a lot of hardcore PC/Atari/C64 players around.

Only thing I can't figure out is what happens to the "Indie" devs. Personally I think these guys are cancer, and if there's a crash they could swarm up like some kind of fungus and choke everything with their hipster douchery for months if not years, hampering an actual recovery. Worst case scenario, they turn video games into a joke and we all go back to backlogs.

But the worst possible scenario is that the industry gives up and just sells us all old games on emulators or something. This is kind of happening in slow-mo on steam and the Wii right now, and even the Xbox and PS4 are doing it on their stores.

> yfw the industry survival strategy is to make everyone pay to play through their backlogs.

My apologies for the quick remark, all of the SJW and anti-SJW junk has been getting to my brain. It's hard to tell who's fighting for what anymore.

At least we still have Japan who doesn't care about catering to SJWs since they aren't a viable market. However the weeb pandering has gotten out of hand to the point where they've isolated many of the smaller devs studios almost completely. I hope they aren't the next to fall victim to it since there's been an ongoing trend into tearing down "conservative" gender roles over there and throughout the years.

>the base that supported the industries rise is now the political whipping boy and minority of the market

We have experienced a complete inversion of the medium in only 10 years time. I can't imagine decent programmers and creative developers would want to work on video games when they could be at over a hundred other tech companies that have better pay, hours, and employee appreciation. Video games might not have been an art before but they are as soulless as fast food now. In another 2 years, maybe 3 at max, iPhone games will have completely taken over the industry. Games will shorten, prices will shrink, gameplay will be streamlined, and all but the appearance of craft will be gone. Indie studios will have moved onto the iPhone in near totality and the only actual video game creators left will be AAA studios that churn out COD 101+1 every quarter.

Its over. This is the end.

Consoles have very little merit in and of themselves, and mobile games are basically the equivalent of solitaire or minesweeper. Popular, but not anything that will shape the industry for years to come.

PC has a good future ahead of it.
>>
>>275821150
>- Traditional console, kid friendly games (Nintendo), though probably on handhelds rather than actual consoles.

Nope. The other two options are likely to happen but this won't. The Wii is proof of this, and Nintendo's child taget demographic is growing smaller and smaller each and every single year (with the obvious exceptions like Pokemon, Mario and so on.) Even then, they're still failing to meet standards if Mario Kart 8 and Smash 4's sales are anything to follow. Or perhaps kids don't really care for Nintendo anymore, it's all about Minecraft, Candy Crush and Cawadoody now.

They're going to have to go full-mobile or a combo of mobile and PC eventually. There's no future with handhelds or consoles; it's now reached a point where its severely limiting their success.

No. PC won't suffer from a video game industry crash. Because PC high end GPUs are absolutely critical to high performance massively parallel compute research.

Console sales don't drive this industry, PC gamers spending 5-7-1000 dollars per card do. It's what allows Nvidia & AMD to throw money left and right in R&D to shrink the GPU, and squeeze every last drop of performance from every lithography node.

These GPUs are then made in various batches, ultra high end for research, ultra to low for gaming, and then mobile. If MS & Sony disappeared from console space, it would make no impact on PC hardware development and production.

See this is why I ask. I had no clue.

Do you know much about graphics card/general circuitry manufacture? I think therein lies a lot of information that would be crucial to understanding a potential gaming crash. For example, consoles use lower end components than a current gen PC uses right? Do they do that because the components have become significantly cheaper to manufacture due to advancements in production or because there is an existing stock of parts on hand that have lost value in the wake of newer tech?

MGS5. A good game to quit vidya, really.
>>
>>275822704

An industry crashing occurring won't be the result of a single point of failure. So, having poor hardware performance won't cause the video game industry to crash, but a compounded series of actions over a course of time will lead to a crash.

Bloated budgets, poor management, inefficient design principles, a lack of quality control, low performing hardware, and most importantly, aiming to profit from consumer deception, all are critical factors of a crash.

Consoles use lower performing parts because the technology is mature, offers a level of performance targeted by the parent company (MS, Sony, Nintendo), is cheap to produce (especially if the node (42nm, 40nm, 28nm) is mature, allowing for high yields at flat wafer price PER), and most importantly, because it allows them to maximally minimize the cost of the console and sell it back for a higher price.

For example, the cost of the PS4 is around 150-175 dollars, but Sony sells it 399 so they can make a sizable profit per unit. MS' cost, because of the kinect, made them target the 499 price range, because any less would lead to diminishing returns on profit. It's not they wouldn't make any profit, but that instead of being able to make 150 per unit, they'd make 50 per unit, and as an international corporation targeting tens of different market locations, you want to maximize per unit sale profit.

Finally, existing stock on hand has no bearing on console development and manufacturing. This is because they aren't selling you a literal PC, anyone can do that. They are however selling you a customized PC with custom modified hardware that is different from the traditional PC, but is using available PC technology and software, to once again further minimize costs and overall improve ease of use for play, develop, and service.

New tech always drives down the price of old tech. Always.

Nintendo games will only be as hardcore as console players will allow. I'll add that Nintendo games will also not be ultra casual mobile app crap.

Basically Nintendo offers, for want of a better word, "traditional" video game experiences and there will always be a healthy market for that, particularly among younger players. You can't start gamers off on DoTA, but you can't keep them on Mario Kart forever.

And you cannot create a gamer from the touchscreen crap that comes out of play stores. It is the digital equivalent of the boring toys we all left behind for vidya. An evolutionary dead end.

>>275822023

The crash won't happen in one instant, that's the folly of human perception. The fall will be slow and inevitable, barring some huge shift in the next five years ago it's already happened. In ten years people will look back on these times, pick a convenient point that will make a good story like the E.T. game did and declare that the point gaming crashed.

>>275823606

Oh I understand that a crash isn't one element. I'm trying to think in greater context terms, I don't have a background to determine my own answers so I ask but my ultimate question is: How would a crash affect the medium? The business culture is the one thing everyone points to but I wanted to explore what it would mean for hardware and the effect that would have on the culture in turn.

So I guess a succinct answer is that hardware will not stop progressing. I think you've got a pretty good eye for this so I'm gonna' ask, how do you think a crash would change the progression of software? Things like game engines.

>>275823967

Burn it all to the ground.

The indie devs, the small studios, the big publishers, the AAA model, Steam, consoles, everything.

Maybe then, we'll finally get back to playing fucking videogames.

Apple isn't likely going to play ball, apart from occasionally lobbing it back to the field when it happens to roll near. The userbase doesn't care and the hardware isn't up to par, so the situation will probably stay the same.

However, Google is a likely new contender. They've got dosh, manpower and influence out the ass, and they've yet to properly tap that market. And when that weight starts properly swinging around, it'll likely be ogre for someone

whatever is wrong with the industry currently will get purged, the industry resets to the time after the first crash in terms of development paradigm and gameplay focused targets, and the industry builds up again until it's next bubble.

It's like the economy, it has it's ups and downs.

How about they wait more than the first year of the consoles' lifecycle before making such claims?

This first year on this gen has been better than last gen's first year of last last gen ports. Only seemed different because the PS3 came late, and when it entered the market, the 360 had already prepared it's aces.

Video games have become way too fucking expensive. $400 consoles and $60 games is highway robbery. This is disposable entertainment. It shouldn't cost a whole hell of a lot more than a movie, considering most western, AAA games only have 8 hours of gameplay. $20 max for games.

Feels good to be a weeaboo. None of these problems exist in japan. Graphics are still improving because they were terrible to begin with, hardware is a massive improvement (every japanese ps4 game is 1080/60, they don't even have to try), development costs are low so even the smallest developers can make tons of games (look at ch, even if you don't like them you have to admit they make a ton of games), my favorite series, the legend of heroes, is relevant for the first time since the 80s, japan ignores america and focuses more on southeast asia, mobile games are getting better, and none of the western gaming scams are anywhere near as bad.

You know what is really happening? Normalfags are quitting gaming. It's happening. We're finally winning our hobby back.

People aren't buying video games and only buying hardware to prove to people they're "trendy"?

Sorry, you had two questions and I answered only one.

How would it change the progression of software?

It won't. The ship and patch paradigm is here to stay, because good programmers are exceptionally rare and code monkeys are the easiest thing to shit out from a university. It's really easy to churn out software in a year or two, ship it and then keep users on a life-line with patches down the line. If the software is critical, they'll wait; if it's not, 50% will leave. Remaining 50% will get milked in the next round, and you'll see a resurgence of the software audience with each new round.

>call of duty modern warfare 2 came out with news about no dedicated servers
>steam users threw a fit, made a boycott group of 12,000 people
>the day MW2 came out on PC
>98% of them were playing it

It's a lot like that. Lastly, game engines again, aren't the issue. Most of them are well developed and do a good job at what they're supposed to do. The issue is quality control. A crash would fix this, for a while, but not forever.

It will make developers prioritize framerate and gameplay over graphics and narrative, because narrative games can only survive on the PC in a realistic sense. Gone Home was successful, because of industry corruption. Were it not for that, it would have been a tiny little 10 minute adventure that nobody heard off or cared enough for.

They're waiting for the good games to come.

This year, DA:I was slammed because cisquisition, Destiny received less than positive reception, Ass Creed was broken, etc, and to top it all off, the "games journalists" are doing all they can to kill gamers. By colluding together and not giving 9/10s like candy, such as in last gen, they've created a system where few gamers are amused and interested in anything scoring less than that.

In this one instance, he's right though. The industry has reached a level where everything has been done and promptly abandoned for the quick and easy route. Triple-A is more worried about making back investment in the first week of sales, than they are long term.

If a game sells 2 million copies in the first week, it's a flop, even if it sells 10 million copies by the end of the year. But a game that sells 5 million copies in it's first week is a success, even if it sells only 6.2 million by the end of the year.

The ONLY way to change this mentality is to throw a wrench into the machine that drives it, and to do that you'd need VR or something divergent enough that would force the industry to stop it's self-inflicting rampage.
>>
>>275825297
It's not like Apple or Microsoft aren't doing that anyway. Sony would rather just skip the middleman and install rootkits and spyware on your PC themselves.
>>
>>275811967
Maybe when Halo MCC comes to PC I guess. but other than that literally nothing. Which is why to me buying consoles is stupid, i am not going to pay 450$ to play one game.
>>
>>275826297

DA:I was doomed to fail. It targeted an audience that couldn't be satisfied.

Destiny fucked up, because of Marty and Joseph Statten being fired and the game being cut up and resold as DLC. The former was inevitable, the latter was expected.

That said, good games, good triple-A games are never going to come, because it's safer to keep churning out the exact same shit than innovate--even though, innovating is what the consoles need the most right now.

I wish there was a more casualised version of 40k without the anal circumference rulers and roll throw saves and such, because I'd buy and paint models and play it in a heartbeat

The lore is cool, the models are cool, and the idea of the game is great, but the thing itself is far too slow paced for me when I imagine hordes of units dying and then it all happens slowly as hell while you check morale or line of sight or whatever.

Software sales have declined for a while, and now the new consoles are one year old already, there should be a surge in game purchases I suppose. I don't think everyone went digital or so, people are just losing interest because even the yearly rehashes are dropping in quality big time, like Ubisoft's unplayable messes.

This is a joke, right? The people that caused the economy to crash profited while everyone else lost a huge amount of money they have yet to recover. And nothing was fixed.

People are buying the new systems but not games. 2014 was a bad year marked by relatively few top-shelf releases, and many of the top-shelf releases like Destiny and Faggot Age Cisquisition did not live up to expecations. Most of the games I bought this year were games from 2013 that I hadn't gotten around to playing and had dropped in price, or they were retro games. I bought a huge pile of those this year, and now I will be backlogged for the rest of my life.

Here are my top releases of 2014:

Dark Souls 2
Alien Isolation
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Shadow of Mordor
Freedom Planet
South Park: Stick of Truth
Titanfall
Little Big Planet 3
Octodad

Go ahead and say I have shit taste, but what I'm trying to illustrate is that this was a very ho-hum year for vidya. Sure if you had a Wii U there was Smash 4 and Bayonetta 2, but that doesn't really change much. There were tons of "yeah it's pretty good" multiplat games and indie games this year. The only game where I actually felt a sense of "I HAVE TO OWN THIS TODAY" was Dark Souls 2, and that was mostly just because of hype-- it's basically just more Dark Souls at the end of the day.

The other games on my list aren't bad-- most of them are really good, but this is nothing compared to 2013. 2013 had so many games I wanted to play that I wasn't able to get around to half of them until 2014. 2014 was so barren that I had time to catch up on the leftovers from 2013, and still had time to devote to my retro collection.

You misunderstand anon. I mean, what they teach you about economics, the ups and downs and crashes are normal. You don't want them to happen, but they are normal.

That said, 2008 crash was artificial and done on purpose. That is not normal, that is exceptional, and therefore excluded from the generalization.

You can tell industry is dead from a simple thing

>NEW IP HERE
>Bomba
>More bomba
>Have some old ass remaster

And the worst part is, it's remasters from a mediocre generation, average shit like DMC4 and Tomb Raider, let alone GTA5. You could tell gaming was creatively rock bottom ten years ago, now they're just getting pathetic.
>>
>>275809543
Why the fuck would anyone buy a current gen console? The consoles are like a year old and we're still seeing cross-generational games. The only cross-generational games from the generation before that I have was Hitman Blood Money which was on the original Xbox and 360, nowadays every fucking game is available on PS3/4 and the 360/Xbone.

MS and Sony could've saved a lot of grief and industry fuckups if they had mandated that all games need to run at 1080p60 and that there should be no cross generation titles.

Devs would have had no choice but to comply. They don't want to jump ship to PC, because that would mean that they could no longer bullshit their way to success, ala, they'd have to actually try and work hard.

Bad decision; giving more power to the catcher to block off the plate even when the catcher does not have the ball.

this, i dont even like any game you listed, but its true, there just wasn't much out there this year that wasn't AAA flops, or really bad indie games.
in addittion to the increasing obsession of F2P games like league, dota, heartstone, and counterstrike, people won't waste their money unless they feel they NEED to own a game.
also twitch and youtube play a huge part. since before buying anything we get to see how AAA shit like destiny and AC are actually bad games, news of which travels through the internet fast.
