I've reached Tokyo in SMTIV and I'm totally lost. Like, beyond lost. The only things in my quest list are "Find the Black Samurai" and "Locate the Transporters". I'm in Shinjuku now and slaying Corpses, but everything here seems above my level and I keep getting jumped and killed in one turn. Is there somewhere else I overlooked?

I just downloaded Smt Devil Summoner. What's your all's opinions on it?

Have you actually played the game? The extra HP and SP you get from sub Personas regenerates after every battle. And when you strike a weakness or get a critical attack, your next skill costs no HP or SP.
If you're worried about healing, then heal with the free boosted spells (you also get priority from this) or use healing items.
The game isn't bad in the slightest.

Magic seems to be useful only for hitting all enemies with an elemental weakness and status effects. Physical attackers can do almost everything else including hitting single target's elemental weaknesses, almighty attacks, and buffing or debuffing, as well as binding.

Getting killed in one turn when you get jumped is sadly normal. Save often. Don't get jumped.
When you first get to Tokyo was the worst part of the game for me. Just keep trying to find new places. Don't feel the need to complete every sidequest if you don't want to, they're REALLY not fun, especially before you get your hands on Estoma Sword.
There are a few places where you have to talk to somebody for progression to advance. Talk to everybody in each bar, there's a few places where you have to talk to some random guy with a random quest.
It got much better for me once I found the Black Samurai.

The dungeon designs are super lame compared to, say, Nocturne. This wouldn't bother you at all because P3+4 has randomized floors instead of real dungeons.
The combat is all-or-nothing with the Smirk system and no defense stat. Boss battles are too short and you're either completely destroyed or they feel too easy.

I've played a good amount of MegaTen and I still enjoyed it quite a bit though.

P3P has full party control and FeMC. IMO P3P is far inferior to FES, but full party control is easily something that can push you more towards P3P.

If it's the first time you're playing it, I'd recommend FES over P3P.

FES has anime cutscenes, 3D models outside of battle, and exploration of the town like P4. It also has an epilogue in the form of The Answer. A lot of people hate The Answer for grinding but I enjoyed it, I only had to grind a single time for Thor's heart item.
However, you can't control your party members directly in FES. Portable also has a female MC option.

It's definitely a good entry into the series. I'll give it that much. If you're interested in trying other games I'd recommend Nocturne next. It's pretty similar.
