Seconded. Sans a literal succubus and sheep climbing blocks, had a very similar relationship situation when the game came out.
western game relationships are shit. it'd be funny if a parody game like sr4 didn't adequately describe western gaming romances.
None, it simply seems that video games never seem to get romance right despite constantly trying to make it a major plot point. Some examples of this:
>RPGs trying to have romance as one of their main plot points
Usually these games go through ridiculously unbelievable shit in order to force the couples in them together and most of the time your (usually predetermined) love interest is some bland annoying teenager who isn't interesting in any way, only exist as eventual love interest for the main character and usually has no real reason to give a fuck about the main character. FFVIII is off the charts example of doing this sort of romance wrong.
>Mass Effect, dating sims and other games handling their romances in similar way
Choosing certain dialogue options and hoping to see one or two sex scene(s) as a reward for it is far-cry from being meaningful romance. Romance in games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age really feels stapled on and only seems to be there as fan-service and romance in visual novels is almost always ruined by terrible cliches and predictable plot development.
>Harvest Moon like games
Talking to and/or bringing same item to someone everyday until you have brought enough of them for someone to love you really isn't any kind of romance. Still this type of romance works reasonably well in games which use it and it isn't horribly forced or detract from the characters like the aforementioned RPG romances tend to be. However the problems mentioned under visual novels always seem to be present here as well.
>pointless relationship systems
By these I mean the ones in games like FFVII or FFX where there is a relationship system in the game but you are still locked on to a predetermined love interest in the end no matter what you do during the game. I mean doesn't this take away the point of having the relationship system in there in the first place?
>uninteresting love interests
This problem is especially common in the Japanese games which always feature the exact same stereotypes as the love interests. If there is only one predetermined one it's always some bland young girl you are supposed to find cute and if there are many potential ones the choice is usually between a shy girl, an overly feminine girl, a tomboy and a serious girl who only cares about her work or studies and these same stereotypes have been used for fucking decades now. That said western games have their own stereotypes that have been done to death.
So can /v/ PROVE ME WRONG?
Has romance ever been done right in video games? Can it be done right?
Are there games that featuring somewhat unusual romances like ones with notable age-gap or ones where the main character does NOT get the girl in the end (which both are something movies and TV shows have been able to pull off for decades)?
Also is it just me but are most of the better romances in video games the one which doesn't feature the main character in them?
Should game developers simply stop trying to put romance in video games since it rarely seems to be done right and usually just make the games featuring them worse than they would have been without it?
>yfw when they make you save either Triss or Yennifer
and massive waifufag arguments once it comes out
The problem with Rinoa and the "romance" with her is that it simply feels like an after-through that they put in and then tried to make more important than it actully is. Now I kinda like the idea that their romance is continuation of one between Julia and Laguna that they couldn't have but please consider the following:
FFVIII's theme and main plot point is not love but fate and more specifically not being able to go against yours:
It's Laguna's fate to defeat Adel and to become president of Esthar where is forced to stay instead of being able to go back to Raine and Ellone in Winhill.
It's Squall's fate to become the leader of SeeD and to defeat Ultimecia.
It's Zell's, Quistis', Selphie's and Irvine's fate as the children of fate to defeat Ultimecia with Squall and to become the "legendary SeeDs".
It's Ultimecia's fate to get unjustly persecuted for things she hasn't even done yet, to try to overcome her fate with the time compression and ironically causing the exact thing she tried to pretend.
Everyone's fate leads up to keeping the timeloop in game's world going and its important to note no one really wanted their respective fates which is best presented by Squall not being exactly enthusiastic about people forcing the position of leadership of SeeDs to him.
Now what does Rinoa and the "romance" with her has to do with any of this? Absolutely nothing apart from Rinoa being one of the sorceresses whose powers eventually pass on to Ultimecia and that role could have easily been filled by any other female character in the game with or without romance subplot with her.
I can see the discussion about needing to add the romance sub-plot to FFVIII going like this:
>We have just finished the storyline for FFVIII, it's about not being able to go against your fate and time travel.
>Hmm... I don't think people can relate to that.
>I GOT THIS
>LETS PUT A ROMANCE SUBPLOT ON TOP OF IT!
>THEN LETS ADVERTISE THE GAME AS A LOVE STORY!
>NOMURA CAN YOU QUICKLY COME UP WITH A LOVE INTEREST FOR SQUALL?
>Well, I have this sketch of this girl I find cute. (BTW: Rinoa actually IS Nomura's vision of cute)
>PERFECT LET'S USE THAT!
>But sir we already have majority of the game done and we don't have enough time to modify it to include this romance subplot of yours!
>DO IT ANYWAY FAGGOT!
Seriously, think about all the scenes featuring Rinoa especially the ones you need to save her. I can't be the only one who thinks the game goes full-retard during them? Or that FFVIII could be improved a lot by having anyone but Rinoa as the forced love interest or simply by removing the whole romance sub-plot from it all-together? Rinoa really serves no purpose apart from being an eventual love interest for Squall or that the scenes that have focus on rescuing her really feel out of place?
>not already knowing that you should pick Triss
Here is an example of a scene about rescuing Rinoa going full-retard and feeling out of place during the battle of Gardens:
>Rinoa is a dump bitch and falls of the side of the Garden
>Hey Quistis, lets go bug Squall about this, it's not like we have anything resembling a rope on us do we?
>Good idea Zell, let's do that instead of trying to help her ourselves!
>Hey Squall, Rinoa is a dump bitch and fell on the side of garden! Go save her!
>Fuck you guys, I'm busy right now!
>10 minutes later
>But Squall, she'll die!
>Whatever, I don't give a fuck.
>But Squall, she is really going to die!
>Oh my god Zell, I'll go if you just STFU
>15 minutes later
>Squall! For fucks sake go save her!
>I don't wanna and I have a battle against Galbadians to lead here!
>Squall, she is going to die!!!
>Fine, I'll abandon all my duties and go if you guys STFU for real this time.
>Squall goes to save Rinoa by running in the OPPOSITE direction from her
>meanwhile Rinoa is still somehow holding herself at side of the garden with just two fingers despite the Gardens constantly ramming into each other at full speed
>elsewhere Squall gets hit by a giant flying platform
>slow paced fist fight ensues
>the opponent eventually falls off
>steal the device by leaning forward
>Rinoa, jump on this conveniently placed rid cord with a foot hole!
>Yay!!! I knew you'd save me Squall!
>Land in middle of battlefield as Balamb students use swords against niggahs with guns
>"I think we're winning, Squall. HURRRRRR!"
>"Yeah, looks that way... DURRRRRRRRRR"
This certainly feels like a part that is full retard just because they needed to add bullshit featuring Rinoa that originally wasn't there here.
I feel that Triss knows that Geralt is still in love with Yeneffer and doesn't really care if he picks her or not, even though it's obvious that she loves him and would help him to the end.
>Geralt is still in love with Yeneffer
It seems like he just misses her, not like he actually still loves her.
>doesn't really care if he picks her or not
She desperately hopes he does.
>Killer is Dead
It got romance great, as in you stare at someone's tits then you're rewarded with sex.
Optional hard modes:
Hard: Romance between the characters must more than just choosing few dialogue options and getting one or two scenes as a reward for it. I'm looking at you Mass Effect.
Very Hard: There must be a notable age-gap between the characters and bullshit like "This character looks and acts like 12 year old but is actually 1000 years old!" doesn't count.
Dante Must Die: All of above must be true and the woman must be a normal human being and not some kind of deity or monster.
>tfw there will NEVER be a video game that even attempts to make a romance like this due to the fact that video games romances are usually aimed at 13 to 17 year olds (despite the average age of gamers being around 30 nowadays) and Japan's and large portion of gamers obsession about jailbeats and/or underage girls. The "1000 year old loli who looks and acts like 12 year old" is a good example of latter, these characters are clearly targeted to appeal to pedos and lolifags and the "I'm really 1000 year old" only serves as a shitty excuse to justify them.
Desesperately? yes, but in a more "deep inside"
I don't see Triss going full mad and burning people out of jealousy. Triss looks like she would accept it even if pains her so much.
I mean, i'm talking about Geralt character, if it was completely and totally about me (which kinda IS) i would choose Triss awesome personality and tits and ass.
Because she's the whole package for fuck's sake, Geralt.
Seriously it's as human as it gets.
Yes, Geralt fucks a lot. So it looks like Triss has.
But everyone has. And in the Witcher world, finding someone you actually care about is hard because everyone is a self centered egotistical psychotic DICK.
Kinda like real life.
Alpha Protocol technically gets all of the hard modes.
While you actually don't ever fuck Sis, there's so much unresolved sexual tension between the two when she gets
Mike out of his restraints in the hidden house.
You might argue that you do only see her for two scenes or something, but it's enough to get her infatuated with you if you
do your research on the necklace and shove it into Albatross' face
>witcher got romance right
>collectable trading cards for every woman you sleep with
>takes 5 seconds of effort to fuck any woman in the game
but not for the character you play as.
Record of Agarest War. You even get to impregnate the girls.
Don't confuse casual whoring around and romance
> Last chapter of The Lady of the Lake
> Triss and Yen are at each others throuts over the G man
> They completely drop it when an actual problem comes up
> Save each others ass
There still best friend's at heart.
I remember playing the ff8 demo where Rinoa didn't have any speaking lines. She was effectively just a party filler, but she would still react to the other characters and silently laugh when that dog showed up. Thought she gonna be a cool mute character.
Then I played the final game.
it works perfectly for happy merchants.
>Kingdom Hearts 1
You know...that's actually really true. You get a simple and clean teenage romance with little shit like the carving of the love fruit and the little oath pendent. It's just a kid trying to get back to his friends and that girl he has a crush on.
THEY WILL SEE. WE'LL FIGHT UNTIL ETERNITY.
COME WITH ME. WE'LL STAND AND FIGHT TOGETHER.
Anon, why would i want to romance cardboard?
It's one of kind game.
Great plot and amazing gameplay
>mfw if Catherine 2 happen
If I was a game designer, I'd add a loli character, with genuinely low age
She'd be unromancable in a normal game, unlike every other girl, however it is possible to go on a date with her after certain conditions are met. Some really absurd ones, like New Game++ and dozens of hours of grinding
And at the end she'd be like "Sorry, but I just don't find you sexually attractive" and everything goes on as normal
Then again I'm not a game designer, just a burgerflipper at Subway
Not him, but do you even know what that means? You're just using it as a throwaway insult to discard his opinion without actually needing to address anything he says
You could say NORMALFAG or NERD or whatever else and it wouldn't change a thing
Have they released Rapunzel's model to the general public?
>wanting romance in your games
Love isn't a real thing, anyway. I suppose if you want a game that's blind to reality and tries to pull your heartstrings, you'd like it. Me, personally, I prefer truth.
>Should game developers simply stop trying to put romance in video games since it rarely seems to be done right
Pretty much. It doesn't add any real substance other then shipping faggotry. Anyone who wants romance in gaming are just people so desperate for romance in their own lives that they have to shove some unimportant stuff like that in video games.
/v/ is just Bizarro tumblr now. The same way tumblr interjects "privilege" and "patriarchy" in unrelated conversations. So does /v/ shoe-horn "SJW" and "shill" into everything.
fei and elly from xenogears?
their relationship was beautiful and deep, and... the game kinda implied they had sex at some point (a first for an all age jrpg?)
> You have a unhealthy relationship with a computer program
Divinity Dragon Commander.
Dwarf Waifu is best Waifu.
>That scene in the second game where you try to resurrect Alice but fail
thank jesus the good endings are also cannon because of time loop shennigans.
I have made some threads about video game romances and apparently these are the best video games have to offer:
Prince of Persia The Sands of Time
I still haven't gotten around to play Grim Fandango, can someone describe what kind of romance it features?
It might be because it was my first real romance arc in vidya, but I always felt the romantic sub plot in Final Fantasy Four was a great romance. It was very obviously used to advance the plot of the whole story. It weaves well into the whole thing and doesn't feel like a minor distraction from the plot.
Was waiting for this, fuck yeah Shadow Hearts. Really wanted a 3rd to see the conclusion of the time loop but whatever it's implied.
>implying that's perfection
not a bad choice though
>It weaves well into the whole thing and doesn't feel like a minor distraction from the plot.
I said this in a FF thread earlier today but here it is again:
The romance between Cecil and Rosa in FFIV is tolerable (compared to ones in FFVIII and FFX) because Cecil and Rosa are an established couple from get go so the game doesn't have go through forced unbelievable bullshit to force them into loving each other.
FF romance tier list
God tier: none as the best characters are never given much focus or any romantic focus
High tier: none as the best FF games are the ones where romance isn't the focus
Mid tier: Cecil and Rosa
Low tier: Locke, Terra and Celes, Cloud, Aeris and Tifa
Shit tier: Zidane and Garnet, Tidus and Yuna
Way beyond shit tier: Squall and Rinoa, Steiner and Beatrix
Valkyria Chronicles is probably my favorite romance. Mostly because for once, the protag isn't a beta bitch who doesn't admit his feelings (see gif)
Taiga is olev.
I would rather Caster.
I don't see why Tidus and Yuna's relationship is 'forced unbelievable bullshit'
Tidus is the only character in the entire game who expresses he'd rather find a way for Yuna to not die rather than just sacrifice her. Obviously this is more due to Tidus not understanding the circumstances rather than Lulu, Wakka, etc. not caring as much but it's a very significant gesture. Tidus in fact empowers Yuna to make a lot of her own decisions where other simply stand back and say 'Wow she sure is brave for doing what she has to'.
Honestly, Secret of Mana is the only game that comes to mind that got romance right. The girl that joins your party does so to try and save her boyfriend, only you can't even access the forest he's in until later, so she'll eventually say, "Fuck it," and go off on her own. Then, you'll met up with her later trying desperately not to get raped by wolfmen. You kill them, she rejoins your party, and while her motivation to stay linked to the party grows, her quest for Dylan never entirely goes away, though she only mentions it just often enough to remind you, "Oh yeah, I really should do something about that."
Everything else I've seen goes about as well as FFVIII.
>implying Merida isn't a top tier waifu
>talking shit about Merida's hair of all things
I can totally understand if people don't find her personality appealing, but how can you not love that hair and voice?
>taking a greedy slut as your queen
It's the eyes. Her eyes always have the "Fuck me," look to them. And when she doesn't (very rarely), she looks goofy as hell.
>game gives you a system which keeps a track of your relationship with all party member
>in practice it doesn't change anything apart from couple lines of dialogue
>no matter what you do you'll never end up with Lulu's tits or Rikku jailbeat ass
What the point of FFX's relationship system again when you'll always end up with Yuna no matter what you do? I guess that makes the romance with Yuna at least "forced" since you don't have any options even if the game actually features a relationship system it doesn't seem to make any real use of.
>the woman wants your dick
I'm not going to read that wall of text but the primary problem I see with "romance" in games like Final Fantasy is that romance isn't an interactive element - it's just part of the plot, like in a movie or a book.
When discussing romance in the context of a game, it matters whether romance is part of the interactive element, i.e. whether the player has a chance to affect whether or not to romance and how the romance turns out.
Even the badguy had a good romance subplot.
>This is what asexuals actually believe
Not really. Everyone has trouble understanding scottish. Even other scots do. It's a shit accent. It needs a language to go with it. Then scots can learn english as a second language and speak it properly and clearly.
nigga you don't understand.
He don't want to give her the D
Men can't be raped by women.
Rinoa is a daughter of Julia (who Laguna dated) and general Caraway.
Squall is a son of Raine and Laguna.
Almost, but if we were to assume that Julia had her way with Laguna while he passed out in her hotel room and got pregnant from that...
As someone who loves FFVIII for his own personal reasons, I openly admit that the romance is shit, and it was shit when it came out. It was too hamfisted, and the "growth" of the romance happened about as quickly as the "growth" of a light bulb when you flip the light switch (ie. near-instant). It was weird, considering how much they each disliked each other.
Do you actually believe that the romance between Squall and Rinoa in FFVIII is actually good or believable in any way?
Kreia loves what you represent, not really your person.
Atris loves you because she's a complete tsundere.
You can practically hear her shiver when she mentions how goddamn righteous the exile was at his/her trial.
>This is what virgins actually believe.
How does an anonymous know what biologies is?
What are you talking about? Ovulation almost never happens while she's on her period. As a matter of fact, if you fuck her unprotected while she's ovulating, she won't have a period.
You don't need a bloody dick to make babies, anon.
Scots speak English as their first language retard
And as a Scot, no, we don't have any trouble understanding other Scots, with the sole exception of Aberdeen. And it doesn't work both ways.
English people have the same issue with southerners v northerners. Accents vary by city pretty much, which is why your claim doesn't make sense.
But humanxnon-human is cute as fuck.
it means she's just got off her period, which means she's most fertile now, and her body's natural processes change to make her more sexually appealing in this timeframe so that it's more likely a man will find her attractive enough to thrust deep inside her young, tight vagina and deliver his seed into her impregnable womb.
That's the purely scientific way of describing it, at least.
Actually, you are wrong too. It happens about 14 days after her period, dumbass. This does vary for each girl by a couple of days, but the egg doesn't sit around for 4 fucking weeks before she shits it out.
Ovulation tests are available for purchase so that each woman knows the perfect moment, but it generally happens about 2 weeks into her 4-week cycle.
Even though the game didn't really do well with exploring alternate story lines, I thought it was a great representation of an actual relationship.
Especially when getting closer to the Katherine end where Vincent has to admit to his fuckups and doubts and the game judges you hard on whether or not you actually tried.
>posting motivational images
Same here, that one and pic related
Anonymous fags on the internet talking about not-video-games are the worst.
Well, in a past lives flashback there is a scene where Elly tells Fei she went to a doctor and found out that she can't get pregnant, meaning that of course have sex and there's no reason to believe they don't at the end of the game.
>I can fall in love, if it's for the mission....Even with you.
I hate how western rpgs stick romance into things.
Like, I don't really mind the option but I hate seeing Witcher Man, Mass Effect Man, whoever, trying to get with a lady when they have something important to do. I don't know how people who actually do romance subplots live with themselves.
Oh, so it's like a physical exam mothers can do to tell?
Are there any vids online?
What about her pubic hair was that gold too? or did she shave it, I doubt that the fake mother witch lady would have allowed her to shave that magic youth granting bush.
On this day anon was not a faggot.
>i don't like short haired girls
It's good to be the king.
Isn't that one reason why japs shy away form western games? Asians are physiologically incapable of empathy or romance and our dopey love fetish makes them feel uncomfortable.
>letting them both die and banging ciri instead
I think writing out romance is probably a lot more fun than playing it, unless you really like both characters.
I don't know, but it isn't the case for me. I do have a few video game waifus but I'll never, ever stop the progression of a game or story to go fuck one of my squad members. Romance should be postgame, at the most.
You're fighting a hopeless battle anon.
KotOR takes place around 5000 years before the first Star Wars movie, so it kind of manages to be its own thing and isn't all that similar to the movies. You don't have to play the first game before the second, because each game tells it's own independent story (although, you will miss out some references to the first game). But, I'd definitely recommend playing both of them. KotOR is probably the last great RPG BioWare made. Also, if you play KoTOR II, make sure to get the restoration mod, because the vanilla game has a lot of cut content.
>short haired girls with nice tits
I chose to stay with a horrible gf instead of going for the fun girl with short hair and wonderful tits once. Worst month of my life.
My entire life is all for naught.
Men confirmed for not having nipples
F A G
The subtext of the scene as I recall was that one of the numerous advanced, high tech civilizations that rose and fell since the falling of the arcship, was in its waning phase and people couldn't have babies anymore, or maybe they weren't? I just remember Fei getting pissed off at the patrons of a restaurant for some social ill he attributed to them and Elly cuts off his stupid shit and tells him.
Max Payne 2.
Also, the series ended with that part.
I have to say the most impressive expression of love in the video game medium has to be chapter seventeen of Crab Nicholson's Extreme Sleep-Over: Text Adventure. It was subtle to be sure but that made it all the more powerful.
Are literally all Witcher cosplayers pornstars that CDProject hired? Not complaining, just curious.
Is that a girl or a boy
This is important
Kingdom Hearts doesn't feature a romance plot outside of the Disney characters
It's friendship. And the paopu fruit isn't a "love fruit."
Nomura's stated in an interview that he wants to keep the relationship between Sora and Kairi ambiguous When Riku tossed the paopu to Sora he was sharing it with him
It's his little brother they are both werewolves. They are slaves to vampires but you're supposed to be happy for their slavery because Japan is stupid also that comic is alright.
>the thought of them watching her change
There must be art of this somewhere
No game ever has ever done romance right b/c gamers and the people who make them are immature as fucking hell. The gaming industry as a whole is stuck in a period comparable to anyone's teenaged years, and like most teenaged romances, the romantic subplots in pretty much every game are stupid, childish, and poorly thought out.
I forgot this was a thing. It's mostly behind-the-stage, right? Although they're more "friends that can't or don't know how to say to each other about how they feel" or whatever it is. Weird shit. Thought it was one-sided with Mona and it's been stated she was "smitten" and "looks up to him for some reason" in descriptions, but there's that thing where he dreams about her, right? Some scene or intermission in the first game. They never really did anything with this though and I doubt they will, but I find it weird how they mention it so much.
Let's be honest here: No game has ever really done romance right.
Game devs are generally socially inept. Even those who have a girlfriend or wife still don't really know shit about romance because they hooked up with their significant other in an awkward way.
Their ideas of romance are either childish - MC, I... I like you! (Japan), or they're just plain fucking stupid - 3 instances of dialog and the correct dialog tree choice = I want to fuck you MC! (West).
Final Fantasy 4
>Girls getts slutty with both guys
>Gives fake hopes to the mental unstable weirdo
>Of course the girl chooses the top MC knight who will be the new king eventually and has its own airship
>The weirdo tries to get away from his friends who are in a relationship to avoid feeling bad and awkward situations
>Of course all that bullshit of the power of friendship and muh childhood pal from MC doesn't let the third wheel to go away
Just like real like mang
Mount & Blade: Warband
It was a pretty shit story, even if the protagonist was voiced by Akihiko.
There was no drama or tension, since anyone with half a brain cell could see the 'truth' about Saya almost immediately. It was a VN that begged for some mystery, but even though there was some dramatic irony by way of Fuminori's friends, it really didn't have that great of an impact.
It had nice art though- I'll give it that.
Are you retarded nigga.
Handing a paopau fruit is like saying you want to stay with someone forever. Sora carved an image of himself giving one to Kairi and at the end she carved herself giving it back.
Fuck off with your gay Riku shit.
>or they're just plain fucking stupid - 3 instances of dialog and the correct dialog tree choice = I want to fuck you MC! (West).
So you want the player to go on dates that take hours in real time?
Nigger it's a fucking video game.
That just makes me ant to play em even more.
>implying romance means the same thing to everyone
>implying there is a 'right' way to portray romance
>oh youre a fujoshit
No, I reject all romances the fanbase tries to force as canon, because it's all dumb and it misses the point of the games' overarching themes
And he definitely did say that. It's in an Ultimania somewhere, I think
Why so concerned with romance when you obsess over cartoon food that looks better than anything youve ever eaten in real life?
>mfw the "good" end also
It can look not bad. But for sexy you need length.
>good end ends mankind
I see no contradiction.
>in the last year
Confirmed newfag holy shit so fucking new
getting bitches is easy, getting someone i really like being with is impossible.
>being this much of a normie
I thought we where on /v/ not on fucking /b/.
>If two people share one, their destinies become intertwined. They'll remain a part of each other's lives no matter what.
>Somewhere out there, there's this tree with star-shaped fruit. And the fruit represents an unbreakable connection. So as long as you and your friends carry good luck charms shaped like it, nothing can ever drive you apart. You will always find your way back to each other. An unbreakable connection.
The whole series is about friendship, always has been.
Forcing any kind of central romance in there breaks that theme.
Monster Girl Quest
