I think the design is great, it looks practical and already tells me that JJ Abrams is caring well for the universe by reverting back to how the force was presented in the old films: Subtle ways of using it, and in battle it acted more of an extra arm rather then a thing that could blow up shit.

The sword itself with the hilt and all is a callback to old sword designs.

There is a reason why crossguards weren't made out of blades.
They were used to protect your fingers and to give you extra thrusting power so your hand wouldn't slide towards your blade.

The JJ saber would make sense if the crossguard was made out of some lightsaber resistant material, not just some lasers glued on it.
