I think people should stop defining essential vidya as 10/10 material and just unique and enjoyable experiences that don't feel like desperate cashouts or under developed drivel. That's just me thoigh
Uprising it the best 3DS game, one of the best on-rails games since Starfox 64, and better than 90% of modern video games
I'm sorry if your hands don't work right but design-wise it's almost perfect
One of my recent favorites and certainly the best thing to ever come out of Kickstarter
and was Devil May Cry 4 released after 2010?
Why not a list of "essential" games by genre. For instance, having Borderlands or whatever for fps, DoA or Tekken for fighting, Elder Scrolls/ Fallout for rpg and then we can branch from there.
In six years, will you still be labelling Tropical Freeze as "essential"? Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the game, but its not some kind of decade-making experience.
When you assume that somebody must be a brand loyalist or fanboy without any evidence, it only makes you look like you're projecting.
I say it because it was a disappointment coming from The Witcher 1 for a variety of reasons, and that it has a severe dip in quality at the end of Chapter 1 from which it never fully recovers.
And this is what these threads always end up being.
>I think X should be added because it was fun
>No, you only think it was fun, it actually wasn't. Now kill yourself.
It's a very well-done platformer.
If someone was asking for a good platformer, it would be one of my first recommendations if not my very first.
But it is just a platformer, so I agree somewhat. It's not like it brings anything extraordinarily new to the table.
This faggot can't read. Look at him. Look at him and laugh.
>durr, hey google, when was HL1 released?
>idk bro, prolly like between 2010 and 2014
>yeah, that's what I thought "add it to the list"
DP, E.Y.E and Nier are borderline broken from a gameplay perspective and definitely not "essential". Kid Icarus just isn't that good, and Ghost Trick is more of a visual novel.
You forgot RDR, GTA V, Galaxy 2, The Last of Us(try not to rip your panties in angst), Shovel Knight, ALBW and a bunch of other much better games than what's in the OP.
>all this hipster trash
Honestly I'm amazed Papers Please or some crap isn't on there
>no blood dragon
>no dragon's dogma
>no mafia 2
>no sleeping dogs
>no lego marvel super heroes
>no eye divine cybermancy
>no serious sam 3
>no Tiny & Big in Grandpa's Leftovers
Okay, so everything on OP's list plus this:
>Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
>Fire Emblem: Awakening
>Grand Theft Auto V
>Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
>Red Dead Redemption
>Risk of Rain
>Super Mario Galaxy 2
Not one of those guys, but I would actually
It doesn't do anything new or revolutionary, but the level design, music, controls, graphics, boss fights are so good that it became my new favorite 2D platformer of all time
>Only one person ITT said vanquish
/v/ is dead.
>People like this game now ?
>It is you dipshit
Add RoR and STALKER CoP and you have my vote
>not liking mafia 2
mafia 2 has been silently popular on /v/, popular in that many people liked it, silent in that not many people have actually played it and has gone under the radar
It's a magical realist adventure game about a guy delivering a package to an address in rural Kentucky that doesn't appear to exist on any normal maps. It's really well done and the art and atmosphere are top notch.
Metal Gear Rising was one of Platinum's worst games, and while it was still very good, people only hyped it at the time because of DmC being shit compared to the older ones.
Bayonetta 2 is far superior and a better representation of the studio's capabilities
Not him but oracle games, Zelda 2, the original TLoZ.
Update. Agreeable? Anything else to add / remove? As someone who has actually played every game listed here, I can see why, for some reason or another, they should be listed here.
He does have a point that ALBW has some of the easiest dungeons in the series, which is a bummer. I thought since they'd let you have all the items from the start they'd make multiple challenging puzzles requiring the use of several different items in conjunction. Instead its just "Use your painting ability everywhere"
I'd add Reflex although it's nowhere near the release version. It's the most fun I've had in a game for years. Also, Teleglitch, Chivalry, Risk of Rain, Terraria, Path of Exile, Realm of the Mad God, Dungeons of Dredmor...
>EYE does not belong on that list
I am shaking with anger.
Is Alan wake that great? I've had it in my backlog for ages
Pretty good. Interesting combat system. It may be a bit too "action-y" for survival horror fans, but it has its scary moments. Story is a mix of Lovecraft's more grounded works and Stephen King.
If memory serves me right, its similar to DP in that it has a Twin Peaks-vibe (to a lesser extent though) because its a small town and has a pretty funny in-universe tv show. This in-universe tv show is more like Twilight Zone though.
I'm not the guy that recommended it, but I found it horrifically boring. Apparently some people like it, I just didn't. Which is weird because I love Twin Peaks but the actual gameplay was really supbar, and it didn't have the weirdness of DP to make it interesting.
I really wish I could justify buying a Vita. I'd love to play this and the Muramasa DLCs. Now that Tearaway is going to be on PS4 though, I have one less reason to get it.
Good story, one that makes it worth playing through to get all of the endings, that's about it.
Game was alright for half an hour, got boring quickly after, soundtrack is intensely overrated.
Your criticism of Hotline Miami is simply "It's not to my taste"
Regardless of how you feel about the music or gameplay, there aren't many games like it in the past 4 years. And it's good at what it does.
It's fairly unique in gameplay and presentation in the last 4 years.
And those ideas are excuted well, regardless of what anyone thinks about them.
There isn't anything about taste in that.
its just weirdly enjoyable, story requires you to play through the game on NG+ a few times to see different endings. Its a deconstruction of jrpg tropes. Changes its gameplay up with camera tricks etc. depressing story and GOAT soundtrack
Also has a dickgirl in it
personally its my favorite game
Not a single one of those are "essential".
Jesus Christ this has been the worst start to a decade in recent memory.
Fuck all y'all, America finally gets an Umihara Kawase game this decade and on one gives a shit. Yumi's Odd Odyssey, motherfuckers. Shit is FUN.
I'd emulate the others if my computer wasn't so shit with that kind of thing. Tried it once, did not pan out at all. Feels bad, man.
Looks and sounds like it, sure. It's also a fantastic platformer series with a unique gimmick that rewards you more as you get better with it. Despite it not being my thing personally, it's a speedrunner's wet dream.
Take out Pikmin 3 and Hyrule Warriors. HW is a fucking Dynasty Warrior game made by the actually creators of Dynasty Warrior, who create DW games every few fucking months, That shit is not essential in anyway. As for Pikmin, last game was better
>multiple challenging puzzles requiring the use of several different items in conjunction.
I'm hoping they do a variation of this in Zelda U. Since it's supposed to be open world and I really hope they don't have the rent bullshit it would be nice with extremely big dungeons with different paths and secrets which you need specific items to access. Could even have several bosses in the dungeons that would ultimately lead to the same 'progress item'. So you wouldn't be required to clear all of them but it would give you extra stuff
Where's Papers, Please?
That is easily one of the best games in the last few years.
Nier seriously plays like fucking Dynasty Warriors except with less enemies, it's not a good game. The vocal minority fan bases of Japanese series constantly overrate shitty games, it's obnoxious
>gta v isn't in there
Let's be real the next gen versions great
Pc version will be way better though
That game is fucking garbage. Story and choices are nice but the gameplay is absolute garbage. Why would anyone play a game just for the story? Why torture yourself for 40hrs of broken ass shit. Nigga, go read a book or watch a movie. Might as play a visual novel nigga.
Modded ARMA 2 with bros is an amazing experience.
AP does suffer from some wonky gameplay but I don't think it's bad enough to negate the entire game. Like you said the branching storylines are pretty awesome and the gameplay gets better as you get more abilities. I played through it three times, once for and against the big bad corporation and once for my waifu.
>Tropical Freeze > Returns
I don't think there's a soul on /v/ who would argue with you on that.
Deadly Premonition, E.Y. E. and Nier are memorable and interesting, but they aren't very good games. They make this list seem almost /mu/ levels of hipster.
I would definately add:
Super Mario Galaxy 2,
Batman: Arkham City,
Dragon's Dogma and
Divinity: Original Sin
Mybe some of these too, with varying levels of reservation:
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
Sin and Punishment: Star Successor, Amnesia: The Dark Descent,
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword,
The Walking Dead,
The Last of Us,
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds,
Donkey Kong Counrey: Tropical Freeze
I enjoyed Nier quite a bit, but I wouldn't say it's a game I would recommend to everyone. The story, voice acting and music are great, sure, but the gameplay and graphics are quite clunky.
