Playing it right now, about to finish it actually, the dog has been in my party from the moment I "recruited" him
I occasionally switched him out to see the conversations between other chars but he's great in battle imo
There are also some genuinely funny interactions between him and other characters

I've been playing this a whole fucking lot the last week and theres a learning curve
Once you get past that though, the game becomes easy
I recommend playing on normal for a while, then switch to hard and later to nightmare, or as I am going to do play the next playthrough on nightmare
Normal is hard in the beginning but once you learn the game it becomes easy as shit and you need to change the difficulty to have fun, atleast I did

Goddamn FO1 dogmeat was a beast. Well, he wouldn't be very good against supermutants, the aberrations (ceuntaurs, etc) and robots, but when it came to humans, ghouls and other animals he was amazing.
