Brawl did by essentially putting "sexy Samus" out in the open, and since so many people play Smash Bros., more people were exposed to her this way, thinking Samus is supposed to be "sexy big-titted girl in skintight bodysuit" rather than "bounty hunter in power armor." Just Google Samus Aran and see how many Zero Suit pictures you get as opposed to Power Suit.

I know the Zero Suit was in a couple of games before Brawl, but in those cases, they were always at the end or towards the end. You had to actually play the game to see it, and in at least one case, play it well. Brawl put it right front and center so everybody, even those who have never played a Metroid game, can see it.

How is Samus a sex object? Even Other M--which is fucking awful and no one should consider it canon--gives Samus at least some characterization. Yes, it's shitty, but she's clearly not an object.

In fact, until the GBA games, she basically WAS an object. She had almost no dialogue, no characterization, and no real plot line to follow. Most of the shit you learn about her character comes from instruction booklets.

And unless you think Female + Is Sexy = Sex Object, I'm just not seeing it. Frankly, Nintendo hasn't even used Samus enough to qualify her as such. She got two games last gen, one was a Prime that continued the series trend of only barely acknowledging that Samus is a sentient being at all, and Other M which tried to play up her "motherly instincts" and her relationships with her allies and enemies. If you go by which game makes Samus as more of an "object", the answer is clearly Prime, but no one brings pitchforks to that fucking series.

The shot of Zero Mission shows Samus in a proper context. The shot is framed so that you get to see her alone among the vast landscape. She's looking down at the Pirate ship she's planning to infiltrate. And the gesture of her holding her arm, shows a bit of trepidation, as she's about to attempt something super dangerous. The ass is just a bonus aspect of the image.

When the brawl image was used in all the promo art, and profile pics, and trophy, it got way more exposure than that one image did. Metroid doesn't have the biggest audience. But Smash Bros he THE biggest audience n the console, So this is the image that introduced a lot of people to the Metroid franchise. And what does this shot display?
She's not quite jumping, she's not quite falling. She's just kind of suspended there in the air, with the perfect angle to show off her ass, as well as show off her boobs. I wanted to say something but then I realized OP was being retarded. As for any non-metroid fans browsing this thread for some reason, please don't take OP to be what most fans are like. I don't give a shit if Samus is sexualized or not. I just want fun, Metroid gameplay again. Sure I personally prefer if she would stay in the Power Suit as much as possible because thats when the gameplay takes place. So as long as its not like Other M where there was entire scenes dedicated to her ass, I don't really care. Other M was shit for plenty of reasons, her behavior and figure were only a selection of these problems. The rest included being a bad GAME on GAMEPLAY terms. The d-pad to navigate was awful, standing still to shoot missiles was awful, pixel hunts were awful, no exploration was awful, etc.

The fascination with the Samus outside of her power suit started with Smash I believe. I don't think the Zero Suit is particularly at fault for this, and in fact things would probably be "worse" if she kept her Justin Bailey suit. In Metroid games outside Other M, Samus only appears briefly in her various under suits. Not to mention that the previous games are 2D and some are old to the point that even the most risque pixel art isn't going to sexually entice most people. Both of these things changed in Smash. The Zero Suit was put in the spot light and even playable, all in 3D to boot. That said, I don't take this issue seriously. Other M is the only real thing to get mad about. Maybe you think the rocket heels look weird or dumb in Smash, that's fine. But the notion that they're "stilettos" designed to enhance her sexappeal is crazy and not something to get incensed over when they're so bulky and clunky looking. And getting upset at fan art is the most ludicrous thing of all this. This was inevitable from day one, it just took the internet some time to adopt the character.
