Smash 4 is my first Smash game and I haven't played Fire Emblem, so they're just edgy as far as I know. I'm aware that I'm just being an uneducated fuck, but it's not like a demographic of people like me doesn't exist or think the same thing.

I also understand Charizard, Bowser, Meta Knight, ect. are also edgy in their own regards, but at least they have the whole "bright colors and simple designs to entertain 8 year olds" art style goin for them. The most colorful thing about the subject matter is their goofy technicolor animu hair.

Well typically the heroes of rpgs fight for a noble cause. Since fire emblem is a strat rpg set in a castle age type setting, there are going to be tons of characters fighting for this common goal. I don't really know about shulk though.

I can't name them all, I don't watch them. But just zooming in the first two I read are Ghost Hound and Nichijou and they are exactly the same style. The image went overboard with it was my main point. They definitely don't do as many styles as western cartoons.

Not him, but Link looks like an elf. I would say he's usually a noticeable different size than a human, with features like pointy ears that would make him different.

Plus his costume is more simplistic which I would assume to most people, makes it more recognizable than what looks like a clutter of giant belts and jackets, like Robin would at first site, for example.

Fire Emblem characters aren't as influential as Link so they'd obviously need to be more unique. Their games are obviously less popular.

Every other everything does it too. Fighting for a noble cause is really broad. Pretty much any hero will either fight for something personal, prideful or noble. Mario fights for a noble cause. Link fights for a noble cause. Hell even sonic does. It's not like it's limited to RPGs or japanese games even. Why specifically are these characters picked out for it? And on a more specific level, the character's motive are based around the plot and usually aren't just "I want to be good!". But unless you play the games you won't really know why. Again I feel like you should give fire emblem a break because of the genre. It's a strat RPG where you control a bunch of different similar minded characters to win a fight. Are there too many characters from the same series? Maybe, but I can see why it's like that. Ike is like a more heavy marth with some modified moves. Lucina I'm pretty sure is a lighter marth, which is also put in to add variety for female players if they want to play a girl character (although it will probably be the other way around since most waifufags will play lucina and fangirls will play marth). AFAIK Robin is completely different though. They are willing to add these characters too since it's popular in japan and is certainly rising in the US now.

I would say it being more simplistic is the most important part. Being needlessly complicated makes costumes less recognizable. Like I said, Robin's costume just seems very cluttered seeing it for the first time. Plus, if they are similar to link, that's a problem. Understandable, smash is mostly full of cartoonish characters that don't really give off a Japanese specific vibe. Being more realistically proportioned than most of the characters and speaking japanese could really make them stand out. Nintendo isn't really well known for these kinds of characters so it might be hard to think of them as nintendo. But regardless they are very popular and first party so it's not suprising they get these slots. To be honest the only fire emblem game I ever played was the demo for awakening, but my original post >>267439036 shows why I really am arguing this. I don't really like it when things are tagged "anime" when they aren't really associated with anime. (see: the anime tag on steam).
