It simply isn't popular over there. It's very slowly growing in popularity, but many of the PC games we enjoy (not counting VNs) aren't anywhere near as big or as liked in Japan.

They view the PC as a business device, and if you're playing games on it, a porn machine. There's a very small market for PC games in Japan, the exception being visual novels. In Japan PCs are boring boxes that people use at work, and that a few weird nerds obsess over at home.

Because there is no money in making PC games for Japan. Japanese games just would not sell on PC, period, and even in the west PC players wouldn't buy them because most people don't play Japanese games that often have little to no marketing thrown at them, or that don't have a western appearance/style like Souls or MGS. Even Japanese developers like Falcom that were extremely dedicated to PC and developed exclusively for PC had to abandon it.

played a lot of porn games when I was in my teens. but then I found Utawarerumono, its a VN however its also a turn based strategy game, simple in execution, not as deep as Tactics Ogre or Final Fantasy Tactics but fun nonetheless.

holy shit the VN really made me feel for all the characters, to this day I still feel I grew a strong connection to all the characters in that VN, so even though it has little gameplay it convinced me that plenty VN's are games, most of us just dismissed them simply because we are unaware that alot of them also have gameplay.

Many Japanese players don't care for PC games because the PC's in most houses are old as shit, huge as shit, cumbersome and weak, and used for work. Alternatively, trendier students and younger workers use laptops, which are still too weak for the thousands of hideously optimized PC titles from the west.

Consoles are the known game box. If you wanna play some games, you get a console. If you want temporary mindless entertainment on the go, grab that phone and download that casual game app.

Those hikki's who buy swathes of games are extremely varied also make high-tier rigs, but it's commonly seen as this "nerd" thing to do, considering you'll get nothing but VN's, Dating Sims (Also for fujoshi in many cases), doujin games, and horribly translated, horribly optimized Western games.

FPS are generally mindless and flavorless, and in the West, it's rare you'll pick up an FPS that had a memorable, or even likable aesthetic. Most Japanese fans like recognition of characters, settings, and visuals. It's hard to tell CoD, Battlefield, CS, etc apart from one another.

Splatoon might change this, but it'd be a console Japanese FPS.

Sometime in the 80s when NEC, Sharp, and MSX were a thing, some of their stuff was put on Commodore. Koei, Square, Konami, Falcom and others did plenty of work for computers then the mid 90s happened. Sharp dropped from the PC market, NEC started fucking about with new PCs that had jack shit for GPU, MSX fell off the map, and Compaq invaded with their cheap business computers and Windows 95 that had standardized formatting for the japanese language.

Ever since then computers have been viewed as a salary man/secretary tool instead of a hobbyist thing. It's been getting a turn around in recent years and Koei and Falcom never really left PC but Falcom did make a statement that sales weren't the strongest for them and been were in a big decline at one point while Koei just got lazier with each release of Romance or Musou on top of keeping them in the Asia territory. It also didn't help that they were still sticking to pure physical and mail orders instead of looking at other distribution methods till recently. Another issue was that either a company wouldn't in the case of Koei or no one would approach Falcom for localizations of some games. There could also be some ignorance, arrogance, or hatred for the west that's just unspoken but who can say.

I think Japs see FPS games as more of an arcade thing. Half life and Counter Strike both of arcade adaptions and a lot of their light gun games play as faux VR FPS games . See

We had one of those in my town but it wasn't popular enough and so it had to close down. The people who ran it were way too generous. They had a snack bar and stuff but would give out free food and drinks to their workers and their friends if they showed up, and the prices to play on what was about fifty top tier rigs or any 7th gen console with a very large selection of games to choose from was just cheap as fuck.

Really sad they went out of business, but they weren't being Jewish enough to stay in business simple as that.

But they're not. The PC doujin scene is huge. The only problem is most of the games don't get translated or get released outside of Japan. Other than VNs, 2hu, and other anime stuff most people outside of Japan don't know they exist, so demand for them is limited, and since demand is limited most devs don't even consider releasing in other regions. Which is a shame because of a lot of those games look really fun

Second you have a big dick. To them. Seriously, if one stereotype is true it's that Japanese men end up on the small side on average, so even if you aren't loaded you're probably above average.
Third girls doing things to piss off their parents is the second oldest tradition in history. Lots of older people in Japan are still quite xenophobic and pretty much all of them even if they don't hate foreigners don't want their daughters dating or marrying anyone who's not Japanese.

Its a culture thing; Japan was and still is all about social connections; it's why games like monster hunter rely almost entirely on local party play.

PCs don't have the same kind of social connection for them and so they never really made the jump from handheld/consoles to the PC market.

Most PC games are English, and most Japanese gamers have bad Engrish as well, which is why they stick to VNs and eroge, since most of them are in Japanese.
Japs could play games like STALKER, Deus Ex, VtmB and whatnot, if they had a Japanese translation.
