>AAA games are now generic as fuck cutscene-ridden filth with enormous advertising budgets
>AA games are extremely low budget games lapping up the bread crumbs of kickstarter
>Indie games are sometimes innovative, but they're mostly pixel platforming trash
>DLC and microtransactions everywhere
>F2P has taken over the industry
>catering to casuals and retards left and right
>latest console generation is designed to be underpowered, which will inevitably hold back progress and make powerful PC hardware pointless
>FPS genre: dead. RTS: on life support. RPGs: nearly dead and fucking buried with maybe a glimmer of hope left. Adventure games: dead as fuck. City building games: dead as fuck. Grand Strategy: treading water hard. MOBAs are doing okay, with Dota 2 being the best. Sports games are the same as ever, with periods of no innovation at all. Mindless Action RPGs doing better than ever.
>Hardware not being put to use to innovate gameplay; graphical fidelity has also stagnated hard since 2007.
>Next generation isn't doomed per say but they're eating up Cawadooty and Minecraft extremely hard.
>Japan has retreated inward hard.
>Dozens of great companies either dead or a shell of their former selves.

How do you cope with the current shit state of the industry?

What will it take to save the industry?

Frankly, I think the industry needs to be bifurcated: on the one hand, you'll have casuals who play exclusively mobile games, and on the other you have enthusiasts who will move to PC. The best case scenario is that Nintendo goes handheld, Microsoft and Sony leave the industry, and lots of companies start developing exclusively for PC.

I want to make vidya. I am fueled by pure rage. Thoughts like these give me the energy to fight, even though they hurt to hold on to.
>>
Frankly speaking, I'm not a retard do pays attention to the negative aspects and instead always attempt to find games that catch my interest.

This industry has always been shit. There has always been catering and stupid decisions. But I'm not an autist like you to stare at the big pile of shit when I take two steps to the right and find a small shinny pebble that catches my eye.

>Japan has retreated inward hard.

That has pretty much always been the case. Xenophobic selfish jerk-os.

Phones are becoming more and more powerful way faster than consoles are.

The "next-gen" consoles can't even do upscaled 4k, which will be the standard in by 2016/2017.

I think this will eventually happen, you just have to be patient.

>Current shit state of the industry

For scrubs like you, maybe.

>Vanishing of Ethan Carter
Awesome

>Fenix Rage
Great stuff

>J.U.L.I.A.
Fun distraction

>Wasteland 2
God tier

>Lethal League
God tier

That's just games released in the past month.

Japan had 50% of the market in 2001; now they have 10%.

>Wasteland 2
>God Tier
>second half is extremely buggy, lots of crashes everywhere and broken quests
>tons of skills that do variations of the same thing
>no traits or perks to differentiate characters
>looks straight out of 2006

It's not a bad game by any means, but calling it God Tier is lying to yourself.

>J.U.L.I.A.
How's that game? I saw a quick look of it on Giant Bomb and it looked interesting.

Video games are a hobby.
And let's use this.

Consider fishing to be your hobby.
Fishing enthusiasts know what to do, how to fish, and know where to fish.
What you're doing is fishing in the wrong fucking part of the lake.
Go somewhere else to get better catches you fucking idiot.

Look to Eastern Europe and Indie developers who actually care about making innovative gameplay instead of just making nostalgia shit.
>>
I just play retro games because I'm too tarded to enjoy anything I didn't play as a child. Frankly, I don't think the industry got any worse, I think everyone just grew up.

>second half is extremely buggy, lots of crashes everywhere and broken quests
Haven't found a bug yet. Can't speak for the majority.

>tons of skills that do variations of the same thing
What? Which ones? Give me an example.

>no traits or perks to differentiate characters
Trinkets are for that.

>looks straight out of 2006
Who gives a flying shit? Game is great to actually play.

I found out about it from Giant Bomb too. Game is surprisingly fun. The puzzles don't get too deep (some of them had me scratching my head though) but piecing together what happened and trying to find out what the fuck happened in the bases is awesome. I'm really enthralled in the weird The Thing meets 2001: Space Odyssey thing going on.

By my count, there are SIX skills involving traps/locks.
1.) Lockpicking, for locks.
2.) Safecracking, for tumblers.
3.) Science, for electronic locks.
4.) Brute Force, for kicking over fences (if you ever kick anything other than fences, I haven't seen it yet).
5.) Demolitions, for traps.
6.) Alarms, for alarms.

Add on the three separate dialogue skills (which pop up so sparingly that I often wonder why I put points in them) and the two separate healing skills (one for healing your guys and one for picking them up when they go down) and it really feels like there wasn't much though put in to the skill choices.

I still enjoy the game, however. It just could have been amazing.

>Hardware not being put to use to innovate gameplay
Honestly, what could more powerful hardware really do for gameplay at this point?
