I heard that after hearing all the original voice actors turned down the codec roles in Brawl at first because the pay was too low. Once David Haiter found out, he opted to have his own pay REDUCED to increase the pay of the other actors. This was the only reason they did it.

I don't think Sakurai's feelings about MOTHER, good or bad, matter very much in Lucas' exclusion.

The fact is that Smash Bros. is a game about Nintendo's history, and I don't think Nintendo as a company thinks MOTHER had much of an impact on them. A series' impact on Nintendo's history has a lot to do with how much recognition it gets in Smash. That's why there's so many Mario, Pokémon and Zelda characters, assists, stages, items, music, etc. and that's why Star Fox, MOTHER and Ice Climbers got cuts while Metroid, DK and F-Zero are stagnating. Snake too was cut for being nearly irrelevant in the grand scheme of Nintendo history.

I think that's also why Kid Icarus is getting more representation, notwithstanding the fact that it's a franchise revived by Sakurai, it represents a breath of fresh air for Nintendo and proves that they're still capable of reinventing their old IP. It was a critical and commercial success on 3DS, fans loved the characters and want to see more of it. It's also one of the rare Nintendo game with full voice acting and a solid online mode, things that people oftentimes complain that Nintendo lack and that the absence of in games like Mario and Zelda is used as an argument to say that they're backward and archaic.
