So the general consensus is that the GBA is more comfy and preferable to the GBA SP right?
I can see why, but how did you all deal with having to constantly buy batteries for it compared to just having to charge the SP? Was it just a mild annoyance or a real money drain? Same for the gameboy and the GBC.
>>
>>262488602
The general consensus was that the GBA was perfect.

-sent from my ibraile
>>
The rechargeable battery and backlight were quality additions. I preferred the SP by far.
>>
>>262488602
My sister's ex gave me a rechargeable battery set for the purple GBA, it was just a giant purple box almost the size of the GBA with two battery-shaped things on it. but was still comfy and not as heavy as it looked
>>
>>262488785

Beat me to it.
There is absolutely no way the GBA is better than the SP in any way. Even the ergonomics were better as well as fitting in a pocket better.
>>
The only problem with the SP is that it was a bit harder to hold, which was easily fixed with shit like this:

http://thumbs2.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/m0osgCCmXGCz19U997HzKCg.jpg
>>
SP by far. Original was unplayable.
>>
>>262488715
Except for the fact that most of the time you can't see what's happening due to the shitty screen.
Still love the gba though, but the backlit screen on the SP is just so much more pleasant to look at.
>>
>>262488979
It wasn't as comfortable as the GBA, sure, but I never really had any difficulty using the SP for numerous hours at a time. If there is an objective difference in comfort, I would call it negligible.
>>
>>262489046
You must literally be blind not to notice the fact that I am making your point by pretending to be blind.
>>
>>262488602
Design wise I prefer the GBA, also because the shoulder buttons and A and B felt better when pressing them, but the SP is more convenient due to the backlight and rechargeable battery
>>
>>262489108
>>262489108
Eh, I use one of those handles because I have big hands. If it fits in your hand then great, but if it doesn't, there's an easy solution.

Also, fuck the GBA's stiff as shit D-pad.
>>
The SP is pretty much the best handheld of all time. There's a reason all of Nintendo's following handhelds were designed like it, save for the 2DS.
>>
So there's absolutely no reason to get an original over the SP then is there
>>
>>262489330
Nope.
>>
>>262489330
No, there's emulators.

Dear Diary,

I've had an SP since I was in elementary school and for a long time (like a good 3 years) I never touched it. It sat on the floor of my garage and sometimes, I'd purposefully step on it while walking around. Yes. You read that right.

It works fine. The only difference is I can't shake it too hard while playing or it turns off. Luckily, I don't have Parkinson's

>>

Definitely acknowledged. Good thing I got it all out in my adolescence. I treat my Wii U better than myself.

>>
>>262489763
Yes, and i can tell you i am jelly as fuck whenever someone mentions ever touching one.
>>
I much prefer the SP over the Advance. I have tiny baby hands so smaller handhelds suit me. Backlight and rechargability make the difference greater. The only thing SP lacked was a headphone port, and the Micro solved that for me as well as further accomodating my stubby fingers. Each Gameboy was an improvement over its predecessor.
>>
>>262489640

The Micro was very practical to me when I used to carry it around. Also, the d-pad is glorious.
The backlit SP is also pretty great though.
>>
>>262488602
The SP is superior in every way
>>
I played so much Tactics Ogre, FFTA and Golden Sun on GBA that I fucking chewed through batteries.

I got one of those chargable battery packs for it that you could hook up to an AC outlet. I ended up using it so much that the batteries couldn't hold a charge and the system would die as soon as you disconnected it from the power cable.

So I just played it with the plug in, which I used so much that the cable got broken and frayed and had to be held together with tape and glue. Eventually it just got too worn down to use at all but I think I was mostly done with the system by then.

Shit was cray.
>>
>>262489905
Yeah, doesn't get more portable than that I guess.

>>
>>262488602
>So the general consensus is that the GBA is more comfy and preferable to the GBA SP right?
Not even a little. l-ion batteries and the backlit screen make it damn near impossible to go back to a regular GBA.
>>
>Implying the backlit GBA SP isn't objectively the best console of all time
>>
>>262488602
Buying batteries was just a fact of life. The bourgeois among us had rechargeable AAs and AC adapters though
>>
>>262488602
>So the general consensus is that the GBA is more comfy and preferable to the GBA SP right?
Yes, but the original had the shittiest screen out of all of the Game Boys so people get an SP to not deal with that shit. Of course the SP also lacked the GOAT d-pad or even a real headphone jack, but what you gonna do about it?
>>
>>262489689
I know that feeling anon.

Advance wars was some great shit. I probably played Pokemon Ruby more but advance wars kept replay value wonderfully.
>>
I actually had one of those lamp extentions for the GBA. SP was so much better.
>>
>>262488979
>bit harder to hold
it's tiny enough that you can hold it with thumb, and finger tips without any edges digging in your hands, and light enough that this kind of grasp isn't uncomfortable.
The only way the sp could be more easy to hold, would be if it had some extra indentation on the back for your fingertip grip.

Car battler joe and the shaman king castlevanias
>>
>>262490292
I've got massive hands. I just use one of those handle attachments and it fits in my grip like it was born to fit.
>>
The SP is better in every way for children's hands. I remember when I picked mine back up years later completely unable to hold it, that was a wakeup call.

GBA probably has a better lasting design thanks to the control spacing but fuck that screen so much.
>>
Why do people care so much about battery? I have never had a problem, I just plug it in when it gets low. You don't actually go outside do you?
>>
>>262490390
You know what they say about big hands anon. You better not be a virgin.
>>
>>262490517

>>
>>262490627
You could plug it in though. And then get some new batteries.
>>

That was an attachment you had to buy seperately. You couldn't plug in a GBA out of the box.

The backlight alone on the SP unarguably made it the definitive version, dealing with disposable batteries was also a giant pain in the ass compared to the rechargeable battery with the SP. The SP was also considerably more portable, that thing was small as fuck when you folded it up and fit in almost any pocket.

Anybody who says GBA is better than GBA SP is wrong.
>>
>>262491042

The GBA should have come with a backlight and rechargeable battery.

My old neighbor had one, it was comfy as fuck and the screen is great. Definitely the best GBA, barring the lack of GB backwards compatibility.
>>
>>262488602
I prefer the SP over the original. Main reasons are:
1. Backlight
2. Rechargeable
3. Controls didn't wear the fuck out

1 and 3 are the big ones to me. The backlight allowed you to play in more places. With the original, you had to get a wormlight which had its limits. The backlight is just so much better. The controls on my SP are nice and responsive too. I don't know but the D pad on my original GBA is super unresponsive. You really have to press down to use it which drives me nuts. My SP doesn't do that shit.
>>
>>262488602
No, SP was GOAT.

>>
>>262492040

/vr/ here.

The rules are simple, consoles released after 1999 are not retro.
Dreamcast was released in 1998. GBA in 2001 or so.

Retro is not games that look old (otherwise, indie PC games discussion would be allowed), it's to separate different eras. I think 1999 is a good limit to what's retro and what's not.

if we were to include the GBA, then we'd have to include the PS2 and the original Xbox.

This game blew me away when I was younger.
3D on the GBA!

Going back now though its a pixelated and boring mess that I find hard to appreciate.
>>
>>262493095
For GBA games, it plays them directly. There's a small, ten second or so loading time where the cart loads the rom into GBA-accessible memory, where it plays it just like a standard GBA game. It's great.

In the case of GB and GBC games, it uses an emulator, but you won't notice any slowdown.
The Flash IV is great. The games are a little bit of a hassle to load onto it, but other than that, it's gold.

Great system with lots of great games. Have plenty of psp titles on it as well.

I wish handheld bros would get along but it is so competitive for some reason. My Vita to 3DS games are about equal in number if you only count physicals.

Enjoy my Vita slightly more because a lot of the good 3DS games were very, very poorly translated (often without jap audio) or they were too easy. Nintendo really needs to offer harder modes in a lot of games. In pokemon it would be really nice if they could make trainers have a lot more pokemon on harder difficulties.

This handheld gen is becoming even better than the last.

I can't seem to find any either.

All they really are, though, are the screens from GBA SPs, and a small adapter.

All you'd really need to buy is a GBA SP 101 to cannibalize, the pin adapter off of Ebay for, like, 14 bucks, and maybe a tri-wing screwdriver, because those are harder to come by.

Just be sure to look at a guide before you buy anything, just to make sure you have everything you need. GBAs have two kinds of screen output pins, so you're going to want to make sure you get the right pin adapter. After that, it's just a simple case of opening it up, taking stuff out, putting stuff in, and maybe soldering and hotgluing stuff. Easy to do in your first try, assuming you don't have Parkinson's.
>>
>>262489519
Nintendo could've completely ripped everyone off with this little thing had they launched it half a year earlier.
The screen on the Micro was really great, and the system had a really good thing going for it.
But honestly, this pretty much came out after the DS, and the DS had BC with GBA games at the time, so this was completely redundant.

I wouldn't be surprised if the ds pulled in more gba software sales then the gba itself

>Do all GB/GBC/GBA games work on EZ Flash IV

All except the ones that require extra hardware or had built-in attachments, like Kirby Tilt N Tumble, or the Wario and Yoshi games that had gyroscopes, or the Boktai games.

And the games on Gameboy and Gameboy Color that required an internal clock won't function properly because of the emulator.

going straight from gba games to glorious super mario 64 ds and that metroid prime hunters demo blew my fucking mind
wireless
two screens
touch screens
fucking PICTOCHAT
3D IN MY HAND
goddamn that was a good christmas

I have both and I must say, that GBA was more comfortable to play, but need for light and to switch batteries can make using it quite harder. But, there is a good thing about batteries - you can take pack of batteries and play it in places, where there is no electricity.
>>
PSP is the best GB/GBC/GBA/SP handheld.

Here is a screen

>Brother somehow chopped of the top half of the select button on his GBA
>Just now realized he switched his with mine
All of these years I thought it scratched up against something sharp when I wasn't looking, at least we got SPs shortly after.
>>
>>262497352
Was.

And then some GBA flashcarts came out that DIDN'T suck, and now it's the GBA again.
>>
>>262497352
Everyone always brings up PSP emulation

It sucks. I have to skip frames to even play stuff like Super Mario World.
>>
>>262497352
PSP is pretty much the best handheld hands down.
Man last handheld gen was amazing.
>>
>>262497549
Can GBA play SMS/SG/PS1/ZXSS/PC98/NES/SNES games?
>>
>>262496640
I settled for spending €59.90 inc. delivery for one from a kinda shady German site, but I'm a mong. It'd probably be better to keep checking ebay and local ad listing sites for a cheaper one.
>>
>>262497295

I ended up getting an R4

so many good free games

>custom robo
>elite beat agents
>chinatown wars
>harvest moon
>kario 64, kart
>mm star force
>metal slug 7
>ninja gaiden dragon sword (that rad portrait ds mode)
>phantom hourglass
>pokemon
>tony hawks
>touch the dead
>trauma center
>warioware
>castlevanias
>>
>>262497709
Were we talking about SMS/SG/PS1/ZXSS/PC98/NES/SNES games? No. No we weren't.

And even if we were, there are android devices now that blow the PSP out of the water in that regard.
>>
>>262497890
It feels kind of empty ending a generation with no actual games though

Just a DS Lite and a R4
>>
>>262497981
Well phones aren't handheld gaming devices, they are phones.
> No. No we weren't.
You weren't because you can't on your Jewtendo consoles.
>>
>there are people on /v/ who are young enough to have not even played a GBA

hurr durr passage of time and all that, FUCK

anyway I have both and play with both but use my GBA whenever I can because fuck, that little box is kind of annoying to hold (also because it doesn't have a headphone jack anywhere, what's up with that)
>>
>>262488602
>So the general consensus is that the GBA is more comfy and preferable to the GBA SP right?
This is exactly correct.
>>
>>262496640
ebay you nig nog
>>
>>262498249
Wasn't talking about phones. nVidia Shield is a perfect example. Does everything the PSP does, emulator-wise, but better. Hell, the thing even emulates the PSP pretty well.
Not to mention all those other, third party handheld devices that come out of China every other month.

And I HAVE a PSP and I used it exclusively for emulation for a very long time. It's a great system, no one's denying that, but, as it was inevitable, it has been surpassed.
>>
>>262498670
>Nvidia Sheild.
Damn, totally forgot about that one.

Can't find one in Europe right now

Those andriod devices cost several hundred dollars while a PSP is like $40. And they have no physical buttons.

PSP is the best handheld, hopefully the Vita gets hacked so that will be the best handheld.
>>
>>262500059
GBA flashcarts are also around 40 bucks, and have the added benefit of native hardware.
>>
>>262500059
>Those andriod devices cost several hundred dollars
>And they have no physical buttons.
You don't know what you're talking about clearly.
>>
The real problem was the screen being unlit.
Playing Crystal Chronicles got progressively harder as it got darker
>>
Okay, just so we're ABSOLUTELY, 101% clear about this shit

GBA<GBA SP< GBA SP 101 <GB Micro < GBA with 101 screen mod.

We good? We good.
>>
>>262500315
Well yeah, they can have physical buttons but the fucking addon is like the price of a psp anyway.

>>262500301
Too bad a GBA can only play GBA games though. Dont know how you think a flashcart that costs the same price of a PSP that can only play gba games is better than a $40 PSP that can play PSP/PS1/GBA/Genesis/MAME/NES etc
>>
>>262500958
>Well yeah, they can have physical buttons but the fucking addon is like the price of a psp anyway.
What are you talking about? You do realize not only phones are android devices right?

Your logic is Android = phone.
>>
>>262500958
>Dont know how you think a flashcart that costs the same price of a PSP that can only play gba games
again wrong..
Jesus so some research first. A 5min google will educate you. even>>262492236 proves you wrong
>>
>>262500958
Because we were talking about the GBA.

If we were talking about emulation as a whole, then yeah, the PSP would be better than a GBA flashcart. But we weren't. We were talking about the best mode to enjoy GBA games, and in that regard, it's a GBA with a flashcart, end of story.

Also anything that isn't PSP, PS1 or GBA runs like ass and needs tons of tweaks to get working decent on a PSP anyway.
>>
I loved the Micro. Shame that it's Euro release got fucked over though. No replacement plates, no plate removal tool and no mention of switchable plates in the press or instruction manual.

Was replying to people that were saying GBA is the best handheld, when its clearly not when it can only play GBA games/
>>
>>262501589
>when its clearly not when it can only play GBA games/
Wrong again.
>>
>>262493202

I know what you mean.

As a kid when I upgraded from a brick to a Pocket, then to a Color, I thought I'd never want to go back to the old one. But recently I've replayed Link's Awakening on it, and I thoroughly enjoyed it all over again and the green monochrome screen actually made the game feel more nostalgic.
It's purely nostalgia goggles, but indeed it's some good nostalgia.
