Even worse, in SMB3 all you need to do it repeatedly press A. On SMW if you lose the timing or get to a wall, it's over.
Also, the feather was fucking fun to use, don't be a nerd faggot OP.
you really must detest fun of any kind
Super Mario Bros U honestly feels like a true sequel to SMW
>Level design is really close to SMW with somewhat short levels, secret exits and the golden coins
>Squirrel is a wonderful balance between the Cape and the Racoon
The Secret World
The Feather, the Leaf and Tanooki suit are in the same league.
The Super Acorn is the only balanced flight powerup in the 2D games.
The tail power-up only let you stay in the air a short period of time unless you used a P-Wing.
The cape let you fly forever unless you suck or the level had obstacles to prevent you from doing so.
Cape+Blue Yoshi was even more ridiculous and could be used to skirt around obstructions that prevented the cape by itself from skipping a level.
So cape wins in the 'trivializes the game' department. Not even going into things like the earthquake stomp or how the cape spin was faster and had longer range than the tail spin.
I don't know why the feather gives you a cap or if that is based on a myth, but there's a reference to a creature from jap folklore in world 1, Kappa mountain, based on the kappa turtles (which were also the inspiration for the koopas and bowser)
>fire flowers in smb3
WHAT WAS THE FUCKING POINT?
>Playing with gf
>Whenever we fuck up to the point of getting one of these, she says they're amazing and its not cheating to use it
>Argue against it, give in
>Fun as shit, but feel hollow inside
Let me have it as a reward, not as a crutch. Like when you superbeat Goldeneye and you get access to something that makes it so you literally never get hit
>There are hipsters on /v/ RIGHT NOW who pretend that SMB3 was better than SMW
>Let me have it as a reward, not as a crutch.
I sometimes wonder about games rewarding players for playing well with objects that make the game easier though.
"You played well so we'll give you this that makes it easy you pro"
"You found the game really difficult and kept losing so nothing for you, keep struggling noob"
No mate. In 3, you can only fly for as long as you have your P bar filled - unless you have P-wings, which are not common. In SMW, you can get a high altitude and then just hit back to maintain your height for the rest of the stage. You can skip quite a few stages by playing this way.
I was actually trying to bait someone into posting a popping pic
The real question, which had the better Wendy
Super Mario World was the beginning of new features that killed all future 2D mario games. The addition of gimmicks like Yoshi devalued the experience by making the gameplay impure - are you failing repeatedly on a certain challenge? Go collect some items, some backup items in case you get hit, another yoshi, come back, and skip over the challenge with no repercussions.
I know they're a blessing there, I forgot to add what's the point of it on land stages? Anything else did the job better.
Also, I never understood why they put the locked gates in the overworld, by the time you unlock it you finished those stages or they send you to a dead end.
you never get good if the game holds your dick for you
and you dont have any incentive or indication for being good if theres no reward
doing the opposite is dumb, games are all about competition
The few gore pics I have are pretty shit (as in they explode into red paint) + not vidya.
I know about inflation. Ive fapped to monster girls, incest, pregnant, loli, and futa. Sometimes a combination of all those. But I've never heard of popping fetishes until this thread.
>implying it wasn't the same shit as Raccoon Mario in 3
It wasn't. In SMB3, you can only fly for a set amount of time before your P-meter starts emptying.
The P-Wing is the only thing in SMB3 that remotely comes close to World's cape, but even then the P-Wing is only good for one stage, and if you get hit, you can't get it back.
The cape is absolutely broken and is one of the major reasons why SMB3 > SMW.
inflation is a terrible fetish and I feel worse for being turned on by it
but the p-balloon does nothing for me
not him but there are documents dating back to the original SMB with Mario riding a dinosaur, and the devs have said they intended it but never got around to getting it to work in-game
The design wasn't finalized obviously but the intent was there
"Shigeru Miyamoto stated that Nintendo had wanted Mario to have a dinosaur companion ever since the first release Super Mario Bros.; however, it was not possible because of the limitations of the NES"
>it was not possible because of the limitations of the NES
Nintendo: bullshitting even back then.
Rom sizes were tiny back when SMB was made, the game nearly filled it to capacity.
SMB3 could have had him, but they probably figured Mario had enough power ups at that point.
The Yoshi thing was also documented in the Mario Mania guide back in '91. Mario was also originally going to have a gun and always be in Super state.
Fuck, remember when that shit was actually banned on /d/ temporarily?
You still have to build speed and some open levels don't allow that easily.
Also by the time you can fly though the stage freely chances are you'd be good enough to just beat the levels that let you do that anyway.
Just saying, in my 1st romps for SMW I wasn't good enough to fly freely.
>We haven't got it back
>We get boomerang instead
I'd like boomerang more if we could throw more than 1 at a time at least, but meh.
So what suits would you like to see /v/?
-Charging chunk suit?
-Fire bros suit? (don't say just use a fire flower, this could be an upgrade to the flower like Tanooki is to power leaf)
-Bullet Bill suit? (holy shit this would be awesome)
-Yoshi suit? (why haven't they done this?)
You must have been a horrible player, as all you have to do is tap away from the direction you are flying every few seconds to stay in flight indefinitely. The first level where you get the cape even has a large open field to let you practice for as long as the timer holds out.
Am I the only one who liked to have the feather power up in SMW and go to that one star stage composed 99% of breakable blocks and glitch myself into the walls?
>do the spin jump that breaks the block under you
>the cape spins the blocks near you
>keep going down in a diagonal direction
>suddenly Mario flies through the blocks and ends up inside the wall
>lose a life but it's hilarious
SMW doesn't feel like a proper 2D Mario to me. There's too much that Mario can do in that game. It takes away a whole lot of the simplicity nearly every other 2D Mario has.
SMB3 feels like Mario perfected. Doesn't stray too far from the original concept while buffing everything great the first game did (secrets, power-ups, variety). World is fantastic, just a bit too unique for a 2D Mario, at least in my opinion.
and most of that barely comes into play except in specific situations.
Hell, most of the secret exits/areas are just blocked by small areas you need the mini-mushroom to reach. No fancy gymnastics needed outside of a few ghost house exits.
That's SMW in a nutshell and why I don't like it
Yeah, spinjumping is there, but you never need to use it to progress at any point in the whole game, you could and I'm sure people did beat the game without even knowing it exists
Yoshi and the powerups are the same, they are all chaff that aren't really factored in in the actual level design
>Hell, most of the secret exits/areas are just blocked by small areas you need the mini-mushroom to reach.
So SMW then? Just that instead of mini mushrooms you need the feather.
The feather lets you skip nearly every level without even having to die 10 times first, in that way SMW is way more casual than the newer Mario games, that's fucking pathetic.
Ninji suit: You can hide in shadows, your running changes to little hops like with the frog suit, and you get an extra high straight up jumps.
Rocky Wrench: Put on the goggles and you're reduced to little size and can throw a wrench. Also, you can hop into itty bitty manhole covers like in Sunshine
>Start off running slower and are harder to slow down but damage enemies for a slight speed loss when you're running fast enough
>Fall and sink faster
I'd take anything that is original and not based on an enemy at this point.
Blue shells gave Yoshi wings for unlimited flight until he automatically swallowed the shell (could spit it out and eat it again).
Yellow shells gave you a near useless stomp attack.
Red shells let Yoshi spit out three fireballs.
The colored Yoshis gained their respective color shell power with any color shell (and combined them in case of a blue Yoshi eating a yellow shell).
Blue Yoshi+Cape Mario was the most broken thing in the game as you had unlimited flight and didn't even have to jab on the button as long as you held the Y button down after you jumped.
>much more fun to use
>not too overpowered (hitting an obstruction meant it would completely stop you)
>better axis of movement (could glide on more angles)
>required the same running time before takeoff in comparison to raccoon suit
>Harder to control with
>less control in-air
>could easily fly upwards with your chest facing a wall
>less seldom dropped than cape feather
Be realistic, OP. Cape feather was a clear winner from the start of this thread.
So to everyone who is complaining that the feather ruined SMW's challenge, you admit mario used to be challenging, right?
Every time I complain about new mario games being too easy, there's always someone who says "HURRRR MARIO WUZ NEVAR HARD!!!"
Cape Mario + Blue Yoshi + Blue shell= broken game
>mfw I realized this
Should Mario and Luigi as a standard now have visually different variants of the same outfit
ie: "Kitsoon" Luigi compared to Tanooki Mario
The Tanooki suit in SMB3 actually had limitations aside from the occasional Power-Wing.
With the cape in SMW you could just hold it like a parachute behind you, keep tapping backwards with an easy-as-fuck rhythm and traverse the entire fucking level. Plus you could spin rapidly killing anything around you with the cape whereas the Tanooki tail was slower & had a delay to keep you from always spinning to kill everything around you.
The cape in SMW was total casual mode.
It's my favorite, but I don't think anyone would call it the best since it's mechanics are from another pre-existing game.
I still personally think it has most fun mechanics of any game ever.
