>But when I return to my mountain, it remains silent. For far longer than any period of time between messages before. I grow worried, thinking something is wrong with my mountain. I fill with unease at the lack of remark. I press the magic key, the one that commands my mountain to pull something from within its mind, and all is right once again. I am not just alone with my thoughts; my mountain is with me.

Not being familiar with Wired, I honestly can't tell if this is sarcasm or serious.

It's OK to hate Java intellectually and also use it. It's cross-platform and one of the most prevalent languages on the planet. And if you're any good, the pitfalls of the language that most people complain about don't affect you.
You sound like an inexperienced developer.
>>
>>258561531
So? It's neat, even if it's not a game. Steam also sells financial software. It's a useful platform for managing anything, games or not.

A fundamental property of Java is that it runs in a virtual machine. This is great for cross-platform stuff, and is why it is so widely used.
But it also makes performance in realtime applications poor.
Making a warehouse stock management system? No problem if every operation takes longer because it's still absurdly fast on a modern machine.
Making a game more complex than something for the SNES? Now you have a problem.

No it's not, especially when some hardware already run java code natively.
Unless you plan on writing super sophiscated engine like UE3 on Java it's good enough.
>>
1 dollar for a mountain simulator. Yes, that's very funny and random. I'm sure that they'll get some mileage out of the wacky steam reviews, which will either be pretentious assholes saying things like "beautiful visuals, amazing atmosphere." and "it's not a 'game' per se, but..." or super hilarious joke reviews like "looked at a mountain in the rain for an hour. 10/10"

I wouldn't mind it as much if the game didn't cost money. Charging people for a screensaver is a massive dick move, and this thing has no place on Steam. The lack of quality control on Steam lately is terrible, but I suppose it's a person's own fault if they decide to buy this, or one the 1000 other zero-effort indie games that are essentially scams.
>>

> /v/ thinking it understands anything well enough to satirize it
Remember that flash game /v/ was conceptualization that was like a parody of flash art games? It was like black and white visuals of a stuck character walking through the rain with his mirror image? And everyone in those threads was convinced it was something that pretentious "hipsters" would eat right up and how trolled they would be when they learned that it was all a big joke? And then it was never finished because no one actually had any good ideas? Honestly anything that can be satirized about the art flash games of the time (stuff like The Company of Myself, which was not that bad and at least heartfelt, but goddamn did people love it disproportionately) was handled brilliantly by Pretentious Game.

Greenlight is the cheap, easy way to get on steam. You can still have the game put on Steam the old fashioned way, but that is way more expensive.

So, someone decided it was worth paying the big fee to have this on Steam.

I've played this on newgrounds once.

I don't remember what it was called there but I distinictly remember wasting 3 minutes on this thing before closing it. Why are they monetizing it now?
>>
>>258569274
What are you referring to? You mean LSD? I think a couple people here know about it because of its similarity to Yume Nikki, which luckily got popular before the backlash against "walking simulators" here.

>>
For those that haven't realised, the bottom two letter rows of your keyboard are piano keys
>>
>>258572000
Mountain actually isn't a game though. Even a person who likes it would admit that it isn't a game. Aside from your keyboard being a piano, there's no interactivity.
>>
>>258569071
You have to remember that Gone Home got released.

So the bar is set so fucking low that any 'game' can get onto Steam.
>>
>>258572000
Honestly, hate it or not, it really isn't a game. There's some sort of competition, conflict, or goal to obtain in a game. There's a win and/or fail state, as well. This is more of a digital toy than a game. Now, it's possible you could make your own game around it, like any toy, but it of itself isn't one.
>>
>>258571595
To be fair it wasn't like people went out and bought Desert Bus: Ultimate Turbo Hyperion Collection Edition, it was a secret joke "game" that was part of a bigger game that was never even released officially.

People are paying actual money for this thing knowing what they're getting into. It would be like if people were specifically buying Desert Bus.
>>
>>258571354

Mildly amusing when it's a free game on Newgrounds, charging for it on Steam and other sites is bullshit though.
>>
>>258572604

desert bus has been released for money since then. so people are indeed buying it.

Desert bus still has an objective though. plus I believe some group uses the game fro fundraising efforts
>>
>why does this exist?

Because fucking retards will willingly shell out money, even if it's only a dollar, because a game is quirky and "unique."

See also: Goat Simulator.
>>
>>258572073
1 dollar isn't much, but I think the biggest issue with this game is that it's being pushed by Double Fine and Steam. It's just doesn't feel right that they're pushing a 1 dollar screensaver, to the point where it's presented at the center of the front page. Whereas there are a lot of indie games that have just as much effort put into them, if not more, don't get the same treatment because they weren't so lucky to have Double Fine as a publisher.
>>
>>258573519
if its entertaining, why not pay a dollar for it?

>>
>>258573624
There are many entertaining things you can do for free. If you want to pay for this, go ahead. I think the issue lies more in it that this is literally not a game, there is no objective, so it's probably in the wrong place.
