Not sure about in War of the Lions (gave up midway due to slo-mo gameplay and an "improved" old-English translation that somehow managed to be MORE incomprehensible than the original), but in the original: one fully trained Calculator makes all other units redundant.

Choose a male unit, get 'em to Bard and learn a song. Then move them to Calculator and give them singing as a secondary ability. Because songs charge independantly of the unit's turn, this allows them to rack up JP fairly quickly despite Calculator's crappy speed.

Teach them all the numbers and CT.

Then change them to Black Mage with Math as a secondary skill, and with the right spells and equipment you've got a unit who can win any non-boss encounter in one turn. (Just play with number combinations until you find one that hits all enemies and spares one or two of your guys, then use Flare.)

Obviously, that's a long-term goal that you should gradually work towards over the course of the game, but it's a VERY useful build.

Also: Ninjas with the monk's bare-hand fighting skill and Hamedo.

For quick JP grinding early on, leave one enemy alive but at like 2 hp. He'll run into the corner, and you can have your units throw stones at one another or accumulate until you're satisfied. (Use the desert trap to delevel.)

OP here, I made the MT a monk and you is easily the strongest character in the party. Problem was everyone else was pretty unfocused and crappy. so then I decide "I should go grind some levels" but the gallows in the middle of chapter 2 to be a very poor time to grind. Never got past that point.

I also just realized that I own the game both physically and digitally and have a PSP Vita. This whole time I could've been abusing ad hoc. So this threads completely pointless siliceous turning into a Final Fantasy Tactics should post. Just dump all your Final Fantasy Tactics related crap here.

final fantasy tactics is probably my favorite game ever. I was also pretty disappointed at ffta, but then I realized it is not that bad. the story is a problem and so are the judges, but it is longer and it has more variety.

I always played with knight ramza + two swords (one of them being excalibur). never had a problem other than fighting ovelius or that roof level where the assassins kill the guest character all the time

For more Ivalice you should play FFXII. People bash on that game because its not a traditional Final Fantasy, but it has some of the deepest gameplay, best writing and great combat.

If you're one of those guys who thinks that Vagrant Story was set in Ivalice (even though Matsuno has said that it isn't) then play that also. Even if its not Ivalice its the same brain child, and it has amazing gameplay and story.

Always try to attack from the sides/from behind
If you have nothing really useful to do, don't do anything and skip the turn. That makes said character's turn come around faster.
Chemists are your best friends, they toss you potions and keep you healed from afar. just make sure the enemy doesn't get too close to them
Revive units if they have 1/0 turns left before getting crystal'd.
ALWAYS STOCK UP ON ITEMS. This is important.
Equipment reflects your hit points. Keep updating your equipment periodically so you don't get outclassed
Also remember to try out different classes. Knights are stronk as tanks, archers are generally useful once they get bows and mages are useful for damaging multiple targets and such.

You can always check out the tutorial. It explains things in depth and you can learn the rest from there

Another useful tip I forgot to mention was getting the Squire skill that increases the amount of JP you get from actions. That will be very useful in the long run.
Also remember to learn skills once you get enough JP to get them. The learnt skills stay with your character forever and you can port them to other classes (you can make a white mage that fights with fists if you use Brawler from the monk, you can also equip your mages with shields if you use Equip Shield from knights, etc.)

This game's not that hard. Just keep playing and try out a lot of different classes and keep restocking on items/equipment.

I stopped playing when I got to the main story fight where someone was decked out entirely in Genji armor. I could easily kill him, but I wanted his armor.

Even if you fuck up and don't have a backup save, you should at the very least have auto potion on Ramza. With that, some hi-potions, and spamming yell, this fight can be broken easily enough, and that's pretty much as basic as it gets. Even if you're best compatability with Wiegraf (which means he takes over half your health each hit), if you're monk with auto potion it's easy.

But if you don't have auto potion or anything else game breaking, you're fucked.

I hated that shit too. Seems like the only way to beat it is to make your best character a ninja and hope that your turn comes first.
