Not sure if it's anywhere near the best, but I remember having a lot of fun with Sacred Cards on the GBA. Kind of followed the Battle City arc, albeit with some slight changes since the player character is his own character, and an apparent friend of Yugi's group already.

Don't think it used the actual card game rules though.

Sacred Cards was so retarded.

My mum got it for me on my birthday since I used to play my brothers version a lot (he had stairway to the destined duel) and when I actually got around to playing it, it was so weird.

The field lacked the fusion zone or field spell zone, the cards made no sense at all, normal monsters had effects, effect cards didn't have effects although, a lot of the useless cards that no one used were really handy in this version cause they were different or they were a different card in general.

Also, I still don't understand why they had these weird weaknesses on some cards, can't remember them all but I do remember losing duels due to that stupid effect.

I don't know what the fuck Vol. 2 is, just that when I tried to get back into the game circa 2009, it had a ton of stupid bullshit in it. And then it stopped being yugioh at all. I don't think one player trying to put his entire deck in the graveyard, and another player trying to fusion-synchro-super-summon things from Out of Play using cards on his opponent's side of the field, and the other crazy shit, is yugioh. each archetype plays too much by their own rules, and if you AREN'T running an archetype, you get shat on.

I don't like any competitive tcg, because everyone has "perfect" cards. There's no sense of rarity, because people just buy whatever they want.

I liked how in middle school, it was like "whoa holy fuck this kid has (insert rare powerful card), that's crazy!" instead of everyone running completely optimized decks. And the points used to actually mean something. Maybe you needed a defensive monster, but two 2000 and a 1900 was the best you could do. Or you had a few 1900 attack monsters and it was really cool because everyone else only ran 1800.

But again, in competitive play, everyone just runs the best cards all the time. No one's deck is "the best they can make with what they have" and I miss that feeling.

I also really like the core yugioh rules, with the star level and the tribute summoning and stuff. But when was the last time someone actually just tribute summoned these days? it's either XYZ, Synchro, or some other unique bullshit rule letting them summon from their hand in response to an attack or straight from the deck or whatever.

You use a spell called Mask change on an Elemental hero to summon a Masked Hero(instead of using 2 monsters to fusion summon).
Masked Heroes have great effects and you still have back-up of some Elemental Heroes like Absolute Zero and the Shining
