The Japanese version doesn't have that nonsense in the later levels where enemies suddenly deal more damage to you. I find it preposterous that the same enemy that was barely a threat in stage 1 will take off a huge chunk of your health in stage 10 or so.

Yeah, no, fuck off. I beat the US version before I even knew about the Japanese version, but if I had known, I would have gone with the latter.

Castlevania didn't have ass-fuckingly bad level design at points, though. There were no auto-scrolling stages with enemies that pop in right on top of you.

Then don't jump on the platforms when only half of the platform is on screen you idiot.

That's seriously all you have to do. Wait half a second for the whole platform (and thus enemies on it) to appear. Waiting for one second. That's so hard.

Get fucking good.

>>257798152
The game got harder for the wrong reasons. It is total horse shit when a bat can take off a third of your health when it couldn't before. It's the same damn enemy with the damage just amped up.

>>257798258
It shouldn't happen in the first place, because it shouldn't have half-assed level design.

>>257798460
The whole reason I even like the Castlevania series is because it is usually hard, but fair. Bosses typically don't have undodgeable attacks, and the same old enemies usually don't magically start dealing fuckloads of damage when you near the end of the game.
Castlevania III is better than Dracula X in the level design department, but it's still shit.

You're seriously blaming the game for the fact you feel the need to bulldoze through the level and running into everything without a second thought.

If you had any sort of patience, you could get through the auto-scroll sections with ease. The only one that might give a player any sort of trouble, is the final auto-scrolling level in the second clock tower with the medusa heads.

If you're thinking of the crumbling tower levels, then holy shit, you're getting schooled by whip skeletons. That's just sad.

That isn't the point I'm making. I never had that issue, because I knew from all the people who complained about it that it was going to happen at some point. But it shouldn't, the enemies should have been moved so they wouldn't pop in on top of the player.

>>257799571
The only parts of CVIII that actually gave me trouble were the stairs parts with the winged skeletons flying at you. Aside from that, the game wasn't that hard, but it was still poorly designed.

You wouldn't have this problem if you didn't get on the platforms when they were only partway on the screen. You're bringing that problem upon yourself.

Do you like sidescrolling shooters/platformers? If so, play Metal Storm and Journey to Silius. They are great games that rarely get talked about.

Also, while both versions are great games, Akamajou Densetsu is the slightly better version of Castlevania III. Not only for the balanced difficulty, but the soundtrack is better, thanks to the superior VRC6 chip(Go compare it yourself). This is not about being a weeaboo or anything, it's how the original game was designed and you should always try the original first. The only reason the difficulty was upped for the American release was so that kids wouldn't be able to beat it in one weekend, forcing their parents to rent the game again.
Playing the American version isn't going to make you bad ass. It's just hurting your experience. If you prefer the lower quality music and higher difficulty, go for it. I mean, it's just a game in the end.

I think it had some chip inside it that let it have better graphics than a game that didn't have said chip
That happened a lot in the NES and SNES days, if the console couldn't handle it they could have the extra power in the cartridge

There's one or two projects but nothing that's actually functional at this point. For whatever reason Xbox emulation is really hard.
>>
>>257800704
>Four pixels
It's way more than that. The space is big enough for half an enemy to be shown, but since it's empty, you have to assume there simply isn't anything there. You want to stay around the middle, since that puts you in a good position to scout out upcoming danger, without being at the risk of getting screen killed. But, since the enemy sprites come in too late, you can get fucked over for making rational decisions. That's not good design.

This. But, play the PlayStation version with a translation. The original SNES one is fine, but, it's really sluggish and slow, gameplay wise. The PS version has a much higher framerate, looks and sounds better and just overall feels a lot nicer. It also has more content and I guess better voice acting, not that you'd turn that on.

Gimmick! is a really good game. I forget if it's Famicom only, but, it really doesn't matter if you don't speak moon. The gameplay is pretty straight-forward anyway. You should play that.
>>
>>257801285
That's hardware limitations, not level design
>>
>>257804625
You should design your games within the hardware limitations, so, I'd say that's poor level design.
>>
>>257804760
The level designer was most likely told the programmers were able to handle it. At the end of the day though, Konami doesn't have Nintendos code monkeys.

So it boils back down to hardware, not level design
