Melee Mewtwo's the first Mewtwo. The new one is the second.

Personally I still see Sakurai using the first one because he's more villainous and frankly the one everyone is wanting specifically. Though I could see options to give Mewtwo a gender option like others characters have gotten (though it doesn't technically have a gender). Would be pretty easy to accomplish since they wouldn't even need a new model, just a voice.

Though if he wants to be creative, he can give "Mantwo" Mega X and "Femtwo" Mega Y as their own Final Smashes.

Your pokemon holds an item called "(Pokemon's name)-ite" which allows it to mega evolve during one of it's turns, it gives it boosted stats, abilities and sometimes new typings. All it's really done is given some older gen pokemon some new love, it hasn't been that much of a game changer and there's still plenty of normal fully evolved pokemon that can still mop the floor with mega evolved.
