Poorfag here, got some of these. Some of the best headphones I've ever had. For $60 it's up there with some of the more top-of-the-line headphones. Great neutral sound and excellent soundstage.

Also got a Mixamp for virtual surround sound with my PS3. Works wonders on games like MGS4.

Since I heard the superlux HD688b had the best price / value range I got that.
After boosting the bass a bit and lowering the treble some I am really happy with them, way better then those fucking headsets that were even more expensive.

I've been using the little brother HD681s for about 3 weeks now, they're pretty great. Bass heavy for sure and some of the higher rangers can get a bit...shrill, but they're comfy on my big ass head and for $30 I consider it a steal. If you are just streaming 5.1 straight to the headphones, of course it doesn't work. You would only get the first 2 channels (because stereo like you said) and miss the rest.

Virtual Surround is where you take a 5.1 signal and run it though a DSP (CMSS 3D, Dolby Headphone) which converts it to a 2 channel signal complete with proper positioning and audio cues. It's like you're listening to a 5.1 system hence the term 'Virtual Surround'.

i have a razer tiamat 7.1 and it's alright, it takes a lot of fucking around with settings to get it to sound acceptable and i'm still adjusting it every day, my desktop speakers sound better and cost less

Most Android phones in general, even from 2009 support FLAC but not all support 24-bit 192khz. Newer phones are coming that support it though. It's not the phone itself really, because you could always get a FiiO E07k DAC like I have and hook it into your phone's USB port; it's the Android OS that does not support anything about 48khz by default, so the manufacturer has to code it in.

If you just want an mp3 player though, the Sansa Clip + supports full 24-bit 192khz (at least im pretty sure it does) and has a microSD slot to add up to 64 gigs of additional memory.

It's just from personal experience, I would want a device that not only lets me use USB DACs and amps but also allows me to use other features such as wifi syncing and bluetooth transfers, photos etc, and the ability to browse the internet and use custom media players.

An mp3 is just fine for some, but in the age of smartphones and mobile internet devices it's just kind of obsolete now unless you're absolutely wanting sampling rates above 48khz. I'm really not sure if USB DACs bypass this current limitation or not though, so don't take my word on that being something that's permanent

Well, just did it then. Taking out those ear pads was almost as unnerving as installing a CPU due to the crunching noises, and I've heard horror stories about the tiny wires breaking at the slightest touch, so having to remove the tape was nerve wracking. Damn though, the sound quality is much crisper, and the bass is definitely improved. Your friend should definitely give it a shot, and the tape seems sticky enough to survive being taken off and on a few times if he doesn't like it.

AD-700s are better for gaming (positional sound), but the 598s have better sound quality. To be fair, the 598s are probably the 2nd best for gaming at that price point only just being edged out by the AD-700s. I went with the HD595s back in the day over the AD-700s and it worked great for gaming. Both lack bass, with the AD-700s having even less bass then the HD598s.
