What are the things keeping Pathologic from being the best game of all time?
>>
the translation
>>
>>256030087
What if you're a native speaker?
>>
faster travel option
better translation
not having to deal with two versions of it (remake inbound)
better design of npcs you meet on the street; their dialogue options are trivial

but mostly i want to travel faster through the city. is there a mod that increases walking speed?
>>
>>256030206
Can you adjust it in the .ini files? Never looked into that.
>>
>>256030206
I think the slow walking through the city adds to the atmosphere.

>it's a feature
>>
>>256030326
i will look at it now but i doubt it; i remember googling it some months ago and nothing came out. only mod available is the widescreen one but it fucks up the fidelity of daytime textures.
>>
>>256030034
Casuals and not many people know of it.
>>
>>256030414
i agree, but i'd rather have the option to speed past vast areas sometime.
>>
>>256030493
I think I'd like that during replays as well. I probably would've enjoyed it less if it was there on my first playthrough though.

Saying replays is maybe wrong. I didn't play the doctor's route yet.
>>
>>256030326
i don't see ini files at all.
>>
>>256030636
Might not have any. As said, I never looked into it.
>>
Is that Kamiya tweet about Pathologic being his fave non-Japanese game real?
>>
>>256030801
No idea but it's a great game.
>>
I see you complain about the translation, how come there is still no alternative translation from the fans?
>>
>developer is still around
>plans a remake
>original game is still not on gog/steam
why
>>
>>256033467
it is on gog.

>wanting steam drm

fuck off
>>
Bought this off GoG recently. Just to know what I'm getting into, how long is it?
>>
How is that rusanon's translation going?
I've lost the bookmark to his blog.
>>
>>256035245
It's fucking long, especially if you want the secret ending.
100+ hours.
>>
>>256035368
Fucking hell.
This is gonna take a while.
>>
>>256035368
I think my record for a single player game is little over 40 hours (New Vegas).

>>
remake kickstarter in september
>>
>>256036121
Even then it was only that long because traversing highways took ages and I had to force myself to finish it considering how bad the ending was.

I cannot think how any game can top 30 hours without some serious padding.
>>
>>256036449
Then you play shit games.
Why are you even on this board if you don't know what okami is.
Reddit is more up your alley fag.

Whats this game
Whats it about
Why the fuck haven't i heard of it?
>>
>>256036618
I didn't like Okami because nothing happened for the first three hours but endless fetch quests and some really basic combat.

I may give it a third shot sometime because I hear good things about it.

Games are about experience for me. I didn't finish many of my favourite games - STALKER, Persona 4, Pathologic, VtmB, System Shock 2 - but I can talk about what they did right and what kept me captivated, which gameplay element inspired me and how the atmosphere was woven for hours on end.
>>
>>256037065
Village gets quarantined because of a plague. You need to survive in the village, or even try to find a cure. You can play as three different characters, each having a unique storyline.

It's an incredible game with a horrible translation.

>haven't i heard of it
You miss games like this if you disregard all the PC indie games.
>>
>>256037065
Try other Ice Pick Lodge games too. I can't think of a more avant guarde developer.

But you know what the endings of these games are right? By this time you have already been spoiled many parts you haven't played obviously or watched it on Youtube out of curiosity, right?
How can you consider that a better experience than finishing the game by yourself.

I see what you did there.
>>
>>256037853
I only know who the killer is in Persona 4 due to /v/ spamming it in OP.

I don't consider it a better experience, it just so happens I didn't finish those games yet. What I'm saying is that I got a lot from those games despite not seeing them through, and that video games are a fragmentary hobby for me, I often piece together segments of gameplay and am very willing to discuss approach to different mechanics.

I did finish a lot of my favourite games but I never met a 50+ hour game that wasn't rife with padding. I love games like SMT Nocturne but basic tactics and endless dungeons get tiring after a while. That's why I respect Platinum - they can make a 5hr game story wise that is in essence 50hrs long when you factor in the gameplay possibilities that open with each subsequent playthrough.

>>
>>256030034

It's far too "off". It's too weird.
And there was pretty much no marketing for it, it's a Russian game, graphics aren't really good and from what I hear, the English translation is very bad.
>>
>>256041663
Lack of marketing doesn't deduct from product quality though.

Oh, right, I read a couple of replies and changed OPs question from "greatest game of all times" to "why isn't it popular".

It looks so danged fantastic on some screenshots.
And this game has a brilliant style. Too bad that I never got really far into it before I quit.

>play Pathologic
>get really into it
>atmosphere of the city is just fantastic
>start talking to people
>no idea what is going on
>no idea what I have to do
>explore city
>some children start attacking me
>stab them with my scalpel until they run away or die
>look at the houses, revel in the atmosphere
>wonder where I am
>look at the map
>see this gigantic building in the upper left (?) corner
>was it called Butchery or Meat Market? I don't remember
>want to know what is up with that
>my imagination is running wild with what I could find inside that building
>start making my way to it
>die of the plague
>>
>>256047310
You should try again. It's a punishing game but incredibly rewarding.
>>

Yoshida backing this masterpiece and game realise also on PS4. Rivers of PC tears, oh yes. And i have original russian jewel of Pathologic.
>>
>>256050347
If it doesn't affect the quality of the game, it doesn't matter.

Inventory management and shit designed for controllers would be the worst shit.

That guy is full of shit a single playthrough for one character is about 20 hours or so. The game has a time limit for fuck's sake.
>>
It would have been better as VN or point and click adventure game.
>>
>>256051859
>VN
>point-and-click
I disagree. It would've been too limited in the approaches you can take.
>>
>>256052484
But Ice-Pick didnt use anything that couldnt be made in 2D enviorment. Even tedius walking. Have you played Monkey Island? The way Guybrush walks might drive you insane, considering it has decent amount of backtracking
>>
>>256052849
It would've changed the whole game's atmosphere. This isn't necessarily bad but it wouldn't be the same game. I also like the freedom that free roaming gives you.
>>
Proper translation.
Awful, and I mean AWFUL combat system.
Better A.I.
Steath not being broken.
U.I. and inventory management in general.
Lack of day-and-night cycle for NPC.
Really dated visuals and animations in particular. More models for generic NPC and shit like that would be cool too.
Whole ton of small bugs, ballance issues and so on.

That is about it. I know everybody whines about the walking thing, but I honestly think it has it's place and role in the game. Even if it get's tedious.

Fix those and you have the best game ever created by a man. Pathologic is a work of art, but it's far, FAR from being flawless.

>>256051859
>It would have been better as VN or point and click adventure game.
One has to really wonder if you really ever played the damn game to make shit statements like that.
>>
>>256051859
Fuck no the reason the game is so great is that it's so heavy on the simulation and system aspects.
>>
>>256053393
>proper translation
I think the translation needn't be too good though. The rough around the edges style would fit a game like this perfectly.
>>
Well, Vlad's translation project seems to be dead. I assume the reanimation project finally got to him. Or maybe he decided to take the offer from IPL. But I sure as hell haven't seen him in a good while, and the blog has not been updated either.

The ARG for Reanimated should start very soon. In fact, it was supposed to start already. We need some kind russian fellows to keep an eye out and posting if anything appears in russian media.
>>
>>256053941
There are plenty of characters that obviously speak pretty cryptically already. Gryph is notably incomprehensible most of the time.
>>
>>256053941
>I think the translation needn't be too good though. The rough around the edges style would fit a game like this perfectly.
I disagree. If the game is well writen, it should be well translated. I fully understand some people are fond of the charm of the poor translation, but I still see no reason to hamper the writing on purpose.
I want to play the game as it was intended, with the writing and translation in equal literal quality to the original version.
>>
>>256054494
Well, I know a few russian anons have mentioned that the original writing has poor grammar and intentionally/unintentionally weird ways of writing already.
>>
>>256054494
>>256054492
I'm actually not saying that the translation should be bad. The dialogue itself should slightly off and, indeed, cryptic. The translation would just need to depict that properly.
>>
>>256054663
The russian original is writen in a relatively archaic language. There are dialects involved, and some characters speak weirdly because of their backgrounds. It's also uses some very flowery and poetic expressions and stuff.
And the proper translation should capture all of that.
>>
>>256054934
Completely agree
>>
>>256053393
It's been a long time since I played this. What was wrong with stealth?
>>
>>256056896
>What was wrong with stealth?
It was broken, sometimes the enemies did not detect you even if you danced a little tap routine right in front of them, in other cases they would automatically detect you even through walls.
Stealing shit was incredibly easy too - the characters would not react to you unless you were DIRECTLY in their line of sight, and unless the character was a man, they would still do nothing even if they caught you.
Hostile NPC in houses would home right on you even if you entered steath right after you entered.
Stuff like that. It was pretty damn broken. It wasn't that much of an issue in Bachellor's scenario, but on several occasions as Haruspex and Klara, it could get a bit infuriating.
>>
>>256057385
Ah yeah I remember the line of sight. I think I 'abused' that quite a bit.
>>
>>256030087
Is it ok? (By ok I mean roughly STALKER tier, totally workable with some awkwardness here or there)
>>
>>256054173
THE CURSE IS REAL
NO ONE CAN TRANSLATE IT
>>
>>256057661
>Is it ok?
No.
The translation of Pathologic is not ok.
It will make you look favorably on google translated documents.
>>
>>256057661
It's understandable to the point where you'll get the gist of most conversations.

Basically people tend to speak excessively wordy with the translations to where you'll have to reread a lot of it to actually get what they're telling you about/to do. One of the main things that helps you through the game is that the player characters aren't blank slates and actually have dialogue that responds that will sum it up in a usually more digestible manner.

Except for Klara

You're fucked in Klara's playthrough
>>
>>256050347
>game also released on ps4
Cool. Why would I mind? I've never seen anyone harp on about consoles NEVER EVER getting Pathologic-- it's a little too obscure for that. Ps4 confirmed for getting good indie games.
>>
>>256054934
Is it set in some super remote region of Russia? I'm imagining it as everyone having a serious southern accent/ using odd turns of phrase.

Not really, the whole world is entirely fictional, though the inspiration from some remote russian areas is pretty clear.
It's also ahistorical, and filled with anachronisms.

It looks like they actually took a lot of hints from Icepick Lodge in their design philosophy.
But the development has been... troubled, to say the least. I'm not sure if I even believe the game will be ever released.
It looks fairly interesting though.

Sudden death for no fucking reason at all? Cutscenes in russian?
I'm looking forvard for the fixed/hd/enchanced edition the Ice-Pick is trying to fund, maybe it'll be playable at last.
>>
>>256064093
>Sudden death for no fucking reason at all?
There is no sudden death for no reason. You were killed by plague, hunger or something like that. Or you have been hit by a knife.
Pathologic has a lot of issues, but there are no "sudden deaths for no fucking reasons".

Also, the cutscenes were not in russian, unless you played some awful bootleged edition. In fact, there is virtually no spoken word in the game outside of the theatre monologue, prologue and ending screens, and ingame on-lines when you speak to adherents.
>>
Are they still working on the remake?
