Easily one of the best titles for the GB, if not the best.

Seriously, I remember thinking I was buying a GB version of arcade DK. I was hyped as fuck after beating the original levels and seeing that it was an entirely new game and Mario began flipping around like a mad man. Fucking fantastic-- I wish more games did this.

It made it funny to me that Mario wasn't merely "defeated", rather that he was flat out DEAD. The humiliating music and tiny halo over Mario's unmoving charred corpse with stink lines just sells it.

Fucking amazing game for the amount of content it had and quality to it even. Loads of puzzles, but playing well with the spring backflips and handstand jumps let you solve things in so many different ways.

I only got to play it recently on the 3DS and I regret having not gotten it years back for the gameboy.

It's pretty amazing for a gameboy game, ridiculous how it even outstrips Super Mario Land and Land II in my opinion.

do remember that Super Mario Land was 5 years older than DK 94 and since all gameboy games were coded in machine code there was a massive difference in optimization between the earlier and the later games

the 96-98 gameboy games were sometimes 6 or 7 times larger than the launch titles

First game I got with my game boy pocket. Never beat it, but I did play the shit out of it as a kid. I did find one weird thing: if you pull out the cart slightly at the right time, it will warp you to later levels

The US ROM, I think. Just make sure the ROM and the savegame have the same filename when you run VBA.

If you get an error message about the save being corrupted, ignore it and press A. You can get to the special e-reader world from the title screen.

The thing that always got me about this game was realizing that all the acrobatic moves that I thought had originated in Super Mario 64 actually originated years earlier in this little Gameboy game. The flips, the double jumps, the tightrope walking, it's all there.

Also, best final boss theme ever.

My experience with the original GameBoy library was incredibly limited at first so I missed out on this when it was new. I ended up getting Mario vs. Donkey Kong for my GBA and loving it, then later discovering DK94 and loving it too. They're fantastic and it kills me that Mario vs. DK has turned into nothing but Minis games. I have the DSi Ware game that I got for free from Club Nintendo, and it was alright, but do we really need something like 5 of them?
