what does a CHARACTER need to be likable? Whether it's male or female doesn't matter.

Generally: can I identify myself with the character? Does he/she act like I would in a similar situation? (required your RPG is a more linear story)

Personally I prefer a character who can take a joke and is able to laugh... I'm sick and tired of all these broody "the world hates me" types.

One of the aspects of a likable MC is that he should be capable but not too capable or incompetent. If faced with a wall he is supposed to overcome but due to plot reasons, cannot, he shouldn't just state "I can't get over this wall", triggering a flag that makes another character to cause him to pass the wall. I'd like to support this anon's suggestion. She was my favorite female(?) character in a while.

Don't sacrifice femininity for power, there's nothing interesting about men with tits. Make her fit with the game world. If the setting is one where women are oppressed and are seen as secondary to men, then it wouldn't be natural to have a woman who can beat up 50 dudes like it's nobody's business.
