Which video games have the most satisfying shotguns?
Would you guys say the counter-strike series has good shotguns?
I rather enjoy the M3/Nova
I'm still planning on making my master game. No assault rifles, no rocket launchers, only shotguns.
Shotguns of all shapes and sizes, big and small, hefty with a kick or rapid fire, they would ALL be there. This way, they wont be gimped for balancing issues like they always are, it will be a glorious orgy of all you can see.
Different types of ammo too, and maybe a kicking feature to top things off.
Gnasher from Gears
It was incredible for most maps and kept the game tactical since it was lever-action making every shot count.
If you missed your first shot consider yourself dead.
>tfw throwing slugs downrange woth mossberg 590a1
I wish more of /v/ was hasgunz
As someone who has played hundreds of hours of Gears multiplayer, I've got to disagree.
It sucked until Gears 3, and then it was just alright. In previous iterations it was too spammy for it's damage.
Every fight ended in one of three things, the last being most prominent. Either explosives, a headshot or two idiots rolling like jackasses shooting 15 shells into each other.
In the first 2 it wasn't weighty enough, and the poor net code combined with hitscan made it a lottery gun. In the 3rd it was a lot better though.
>Ithaca model 37
>tfw driving through Ithaca and all that's left is a small shack and one of the chimneys from the original factory
ANY resident evil game. i think it's much more satisfying than any FPS shotgun
I remember Gears 3 being the most perfect multiplayer game at launch that I remember in a long time; everything was balanced near perfectly and the net code worked fantastically.
Then the first patch hit and somehow made everything worse - still decent by most standards but not as good as it was at launch.
>taking this long
The fuck? Best shotgun in a single player FPS.
>that nonsensical double barrel shot
It always confuses me how valve can do strong and accurate shotguns, but all their other guns are pretty unsatisfying
This fucker right here, is the most satifying shotgun in a videogame ever.
>dat 32 rounds drum mag
>dat heat shield
I guess the options menu is just for show
Many shotguns support multitudes of ammunition types including fucking grenade rounds and next to no games take advantage of this.
New Vegas, Rage and BioShock/2 came close but still disappointed.
most games that try fuck it up. I distinctly remember modern warfare 2 having a really shitty aa12. The AA12 is bad for games because it's OP AF IRL, and games don't usually use spaces bigger than the effective range of it, so it's even MORE broken in that context.
Killing floor is the only game i've played with a not-embarrasing aa12, and HOLY FUCK it is awesome.
Metro 2033 and LL
Every automatic shotgun was nerfed to hell and back and semi's were point blank or no damage.
Fuck that shit. It's like the CoD Deva never fired a fucking gun before.
They weren't as satisfying as say, Killing Floor's shotguns, but they were great. Did you use the saiga in AMK?
FEAR needs another mention. It isn't just the shotgun by itself, which alone is fantastic. It's also the reactions from the enemies you hit with it, the alarmed shouts and orders from their squad mates, and the big fat holes it punches in walls.
>play on normal, game is piss easy
>play on hardened and up, game is hell, every enemy has unlimited grenades, every turret level is a nightmare
Why can't devs properly scale difficulty settings? Christ...
It wasn't mouse look in the traditional sense, but you could turn your character with the mouse, which was all you needed in that game.
I'm sure if some shmuck can't handle using kb+m for Doom you could probably get gamepad support. Either way, saying the controls suck for Doom is utterly meaningless, you might as well be whining about having to breathe in real life. No one should take such a dumb comment seriously.
not that guy but my favorite shotgun in stalker games is the mossberg. not enough games have straight up fucking duke nukem shotguns, and I personally use one whenever possible, because it's badass as fuck.
>kill a flesh
>your face, your ass, whats the difference?
Hunting Shotgun is 10 times more consistant and powerful than the AA12. Might as well use the regular shotgun or HSG-1 with the HS and the Katana for 6000 damage on Scrakes
Vlad is useless however, I agree
STALKER has been on my backlog for at least 6 years and I've just started playing it now. I'm still only about 2/3 through my first vanilla(ish) run of SoC but I'm looking forward to diving into some mods soon. STALKER general over at /vg/ did mention some of the mods have better shotguns.
I wouldn't say all of them, it's just that the SMGs are so unsatisfying. In HL all the explosives, the magnum, the Tau cannon and the hive hand were pretty cool. In HL2 the magnum, the combine rifle and the shotgun are great too. The pistol is ok, definitely better than the HL1 pistol.
Need more games that really utilize the unprecedented potential for sheer craziness in shotfuns.
Does the HL shotgun actually shoot from the tubular magazine, or does it fire two quick consecutive shots?
When I was a kid the HL1 shotgun made me thing all shotguns had two firing barrels, it took me a while to figure out the lower one just holds the shells.
the end all, be all to those alien sonsabitches in alien swarm
Red Dead Redemption
>dat stopping power
>blast a nigga at mid-range with a coachgun
>shoot his gun out of his hand and his hat off of is head
>hit him in both arms and both knees
>hit him in the groin and gut
>he falls to his knees
>somehow manages to pull out a rifle
>give him the second barrel
>he collapses and tries to crawl away while bleeding into the dirt
>leave him for the coyotes
STALKER has great shotguns. It's the only vanilla game I can think of where you can load various ammo types into the mag tube. For example you can have it so it alternates between slug/buckshot or have the tube filled with slugs and a buckshot chambered.
I actually loved that one. It had just enough kick and it sounded like a pistol. None of that whispy fart sound like in CoD for example.
Great range and useful until the later areas.
Most of my stuff is /tg/, but I'll see what I have
>STALKER general over at /vg/ did mention some of the mods have better shotguns.
They definitely do. All the guns in Zone of Alienation are SO satisfying to use. The shotguns sound like cannons. I love it
This beauty right here. Because FUCK kleers
Fun fact! The viewmodel makes the weapon look smaller than it actually is, because in third person you can see that it's as long as Sam is tall
Pop Rockets and Kill bursts allowed me to play this game to completion.
Had they not been in the game I would have stopped playing halfway through.
>tfw got a glock and a ak but dont know whether I should get a 590a1 or build an ar
I'd argue the shotgun and the pistol were the only guns in HL2 that weren't satisfying.
Pic related, on the other hand...
Imagine an edgy version of Brutal Doom made by a angry drunk Italian that has a hard-on for the over the top. And apparently he couldn't decide which weapons to put so he put every single one he could find. Seriously, there's like 80 weapons and some of them are just ridiculous.
Maybe I do, anon. It's been a while.
I played HL1 second and the shotgun in that was so good that the one from the sequel kinda faded from my mind. Shit, what the hell have I been saying for the past few years?
HL2's shotgun does about the same damage as the revolver and it's arguably more accurate than the SMG and Pusle Rifle at range, plus the ammo is really abundant and the alt-fire for heavier enemies.
Glocks are -okay- but not the BEST SHIT EVER that everyone makes them out to be. The hype made me hate them
Arsenals are meh at best for the price. Too bad Saigas just got banned.
>Not using every tool at your dispossal in HM
>not cheesing everything with Tony
Red Orchestra 2: Rising Storm's trench gun is so satisfying.
Being a sneaky squad leader, pumping nips full of lead is so fun. You can even unlock the bayonet for it.
It also has a not so terrible range and can kill within 60 meters.
Will the real world ever start emulating vidya and make double, triple or quadruple barrelled pump action/semi automatic shotguns?
>Quad barreled shotgun
>Four quad barreled shotguns
Probably, and it will be a glorious day when it happens
They kind of have, several times. It just ends up being overkill and a pain to reload.
Killing Floor. Tripwire just knows how to make weapons feel awesome
Also the Desperazor from EYE. Feels great to use, usually a one hit kill if you hit all pellets, and a much more realistic spread so you can hit at longer ranges. On top of that it's got a drum mag with 32 shells, so you don't have to let reloading spoil your fun
>Shotguns that fire faster than assault rifles
>shooting an ant into the stratosphere after he's dead
Although apparently the Defender was a great design, the barrels could be fired individually giving you quick access to situational ammunition and the deluxe version had a tear gas launcher in the centre, like something out of Judge Dredd. It was well received but rejected because of the recession.
The Model 1897 was used by American troops for other purposes in World War I other than a force multiplier. American soldiers who were skilled at trap shooting were armed with these guns and stationed where they could fire at enemy hand grenades in midair. This would deflect the grenades from falling into the American trenches and therefore protect American soldiers.
it is crazy ugly though.
A thing of beautiful destruction to be sure; but the destruction is pretty; not the gun. The gun is the destructions fugly sister that SOMEONE has to carry. I don't wanna be that guy just for a chance at that destruction.
>can be somehow hidden during a weapons search
A quad barrel shotgun exists, made by a german luxury gunsmith. It's ridiculously expensive.
>for a shotgun that you will mostly be using on enemies right in front of you
Nah, the shotgun in Blood Dragon sucked.
>TFW you will never unwrap a factory loaded mag
>TFW you will never put a blasting cap on a mag and turn it into an antipersonnel mine
>TFW you will never send your jackhammer into the factory just to change a broken trigger group
Why even go on living when you will never get to use the best shotgun ever made.
A Derringer is a percussion cap, single barreled gun that shoots one little bullet. There's no bolt action, it's a single action.
Mechanically speaking, a Derringer is simpler than an Obrez.
>mfw using this weapon against the mutants
GTA IV: Episodes from Liberty City, both the street sweeper crazy motherfucking shotgun from TLAD, and the ridiculously overpowered auto shotgun with exploding rounds from TBoGT. Bonus mention to the sawed-off from TLAD. Nothing beats firing 2 shells through the window of a minivan that rear-ended your bike.
Look at this shit. It's a hammer with four goddamn wheel-locks inside the head.
One day, some dude thought, you know what, fuck armor. Armor is for pussies. Fuck your armor. And then he went on to make this and kick all the ass by bashing skulls, shooting them, and setting them on fire at the same time.
Sons I am disappoint.
Sawn off Mosconi
Hi power with low visibility.
Fucking god-mode nigga
Some poor sucker tried to do the same thing with an axe but he fucked up hard and probably got laughed at.
And then the weapon smith never sold it because every noble around him would rather buy six arquebus, twelve pikes, four swords and bucklers, helmets and jackets, AND rent trainers for all twenty two men.
Luckily, other people got the same idea and didn't fuck it up.
Rising storm and Insurgency have the best shotguns. Mostly because they behave semi authentically. I used to like the HL2's shotgun, until I found /k/. Now I'm a giant faggot when it comes to the behavior of guns in video games.
F.E.A.R.'s SPAS-12 gets a pass just because it's awesome
>Sawn off shotgun is a primary
>Short Barrelled Locomotive with a maximum capacity of 12 rounds is a secondary
I'm the Saw enforcer and I'd still use the Mosci if it was in the secondary slot.
When the US Marines were first founded and they were still cool, they used these to kick pirate ass and make Tripoli cry bitch tears.
>that room after you get the grenades and can try it out
>items like tires and tin cans and lamps move away from the source of the explosion
>that grenade in FEAR that obliterates everything, blures the screen and fuckes up wall texture
why doesn't modern games have physics beyond the ragdoll effect?
I remember playing bioshock infinity, and most items are glass which just disappear into empty void somehow when they take damage
And that's why they have these.
Seriously, they just stuck guns on everything back then.
What's that? Too much pike? Too little gun? Fuck it, quadruple the barrels.
One gunsmith was too lazy to bother with aiming.
kf did most shotguns very well unlike most assault rifles.
the hunting shotgun was also very neat... and the m3 was also very well designed - one of the few games were you could actually see the pellets flying and not just smoke.
in mw2, the aa-12 were actually good, but got nerfed just like the models so their range were lower than a knife with commando.
i'm actually not joking, if you had a silencer it has the same range as a stab with commando
the m1014 with flechette is also useful since it holds 90 shells with some supporter perks
the rest are pretty much useless, specially since they fucked up all shotgun in the second game for some reason.
in the first the shotguns could kill 4~5 cops with a single shot because of shell spread and penetration - in the sequel for some reason the difference between a regular bullet and a shell are pretty much none
USP's come in multiple calibers. Also the .45ACP is an overrated round. It is the round that everyone wears nostalgia goggles for, and most have never even fired it. It was not even until modern smokeless powders in the '90s were able to push the velocity to over 1000fp/s that the round even became reliable at penetrating a thick denim jacket; prior to that the round was barely even able to reach 900fp/s and was so shit it could not even punch through thin aluminum car doors.
The .45ACP is still a joke under powered round.
Half Life 2
it makes some sense... but still:
>We can fabricate multiple barrel guns and rifles with one to five barrels. One of our most challenging creations was a 4 barreled heavy express rifle for African Game final price $150,000 US
you could buy a minigun, several pounds of ammo and still have enough money to buy a regular 2 barrel shotgun
>tfw killing snipers across the map in skidrow
thanks for the nofunallowed, activision
meanwhile the glocks...
It all has to be custom made to order from them. Their market is entirely rich people who want a fancy toy rather than militaries or home defense/casual hunting. They could do with a better website, that thing looks like they built it in the 90s.
Literally no game portrays shotguns the way they work in real life.
Soldier of Fortune 1 & 2
Half-Life 1 & 2
Team Fortress 2
