Is a backlit GBA worth getting?
Not necessarily speaking about the design, but for ~$150, I'm a bit wary.
It looks nice enough, but still, I want to know if it actually works
>>
wut - just get an SP mark 2.
>>
>>253748575
The whole reason my interest is piqued is because the modded GBA has a brighter screen than the 101, and also has a headphone jack

Anon, are you seriously considering blowing $150 on a $20 system, just because you want it to be backlit?
>>
I recommend just playing them in a nodded PSP, anon. GBA emulation is great on it.
>>
>>253748687

If you're interested then yes its worth getting....for you

For some of us hell fucking know. Its a GBA. old ass tiny screen battery devourer gba. Id rather just emulate and let my old gba rest
>>
>>253749525

>hell fucking know
>>
>>253748426
why not just get an original DS/DS lite?
Plays GBA games just fine
>>
>>253749339
>me being in charge of remembering that the PSP can emulate GBA
2000 or 3000? I have a Go, but the screen is more shattered than Phil Fish's anus
>>
>>253749339
Mother 3 and Rhythm Heaven still have delays on them, making rhythmic inputs next to impossible the longer your play session is. Even on PC, this is an issue.

I mean, it's fine for games like Advance Wars and junk, but that delay will kill you in games like Astro Boy or MMZ.
>>
>not buying a Micro for $40
it's perfect for my morning commute. Doesn't take up space in my pocket like the Vita or 3DS.

>>
>>253748426

Get a PSP, GBMicro or GBA SP.
>>
>>253750154
I always play GBA games on my PSP and there was 0 input lag on MM Zero. I fucking beat Gunstar Super Heroes on there
>>
>>253750107

2000 has the duller coloured screen, 3000 might have noticeable scanlines. I prefer 3000 but it's all up to you. PSP Go and PSP 1000 are also valid choices.

>>
>>253750154
Don't know about RH, but I finished Mother 3 a few weeks ago on my 1000 PSP and it worked like a charm.
>>
>>253751725
Same here, Mother 3 works fine on my 1000. Maybe it's just the 2000 and 3000.

And OP, you should definitely go the PSP route, it's a way better investment. It's so good for emulation I think it's my most-used gaming device.
>>
>>253750154

>Still
You've been out of the loop for a while.
>>
>>253748426
where can you get a nice backlit gba for 150?
>>
>>253748426
OK seriously mate. The backlit Gameboy Advance SP is bright. Bright enough to see really well in the day, bright enough to see really well in the night. And it's cheap. I can go to mylocal shop and nab one for 40 bucks.

If you just HAVE to have a modded original GBA in order to enjoy your games, then why are you playing games?
>>
>>253750154
I played through M3 on my Xperia Play and never had a single problem.
>>
>>253756414

Wow, I'm not the only person on the planet to own one?
>>
>>253756140
Not that guy, but maybe SPs feel weird in his hands. I always remember feeling really fucking cramped on my SP.
>>
>>253757519
I feel really cramped even on the original GBA. What's the point of being a white person if you have nigger-sized hands?

Has anyone ever made a GBA Jumbo? Even if it was a DIY project?

Imagine a GBA but at twice the size. Or a SNES controller with a GBA screen in the middle.
>>
I want a GBA micro because the thing looks so sexy but it really is tiny and kind of expensive now.

I guess I'll just stick to emulation for GB/C/A games.

Might as well get a GCW-Zero for that price. I think it's about $150, it emulates GBA, so you have every GBA game right there. not to mention you can emulate snes/nes/retro systems and shit too.
>>
Get a frostbite(?) orwhatever mod kit and mod one yourself.
>>
>>253750617
I'd get a GO personally just because it has the 16GB built in and it's more portable, but it's up yo you. I have a 1000 and I love it but the GO would just suit me much better.

I have to admit that screen is fucking sexy.

>>

It's just the start button, though. Most controllers make you have to move your fingers away from the main buttons to press it
>>
>>253758674
I suppose your right. I'd say some games are definitely better than others on the Go. Monster Hunter for instance would be a bit difficult on the Go I feel, but I have my 3ds to play that.

Go watch the video in the link. He has to move HIS ENTIRE HAND to get at either the Start or Select. Like completely re-position his grip on the console to get at one button. Let go of the console to grab it in a different place.
>>
>>253759383

It's probably best on the Vita, but that's a pain to hack and too jewy.
>>
should I get a normal GBA for muh nostalgia or a SP for muh backlight?
>>
>>253748687
>The whole reason my interest is piqued is because I have an extra chromosome

2014

Even THINKING about buying a GBA. Seriously, make the world a better place and kill yourself.
>>
>>253748426
I want to get it, but price is kinda too steep. I found deals for about 114$, but kinda don't want to pay that much as well. 70-80$ maybe.
>>
>>253760984

Neither, get a DS or DS Lite.
>>
>>253761720
I have a ds lite. I'm weird and play retro vidya a lot and want the original system for my games
>>
>>253762074

Then get a GBA SP. If you already have a GBC, then get a Micro.

Try and find a flash cart too.
>>
>>253762305
micros are way too tiny for my hands
>>
>>253762423
then I doubt you'll find SP comfortable.
>>
>>253762074
Well, if you really want authenticity then a secondhand GBA is inexpensive, but paying $150 for a modded GBA when you already have a system that plays GBA on a well-lit screen is just stupid. I guess it comes down to how much money you'd like to waste.
>>
>>253762423

SP won't be comfortable unless you get some kind of a grip.
Also you want a 101 and not an 001, the 001 is frontlit and the 101 is backlit.
>>
>>253762514
>>253762592
which is why I was leaning toward a GBA

>>253762527
I'm not a moron like op, I'll probably get a $20 GBA

>>253748426
That's a fucking retarded idea.
Get SP if you want an actual GBA that bad, but it's probably a better idea to get a PSP instead anyways, those games look way better than on actual SP thanks to the screen even though you have to filter that shit. Even if you just use small screen without scaling, it's going to be bigger than actual SP screen.
Or get Micro, if you don't mind the tiiny dimensions and most flashcards not being compatible.
>>
>>253762786
if you have some sort of skill it's pretty cheap to order backlit display and make backlit gba yourself. It'll cost way cheaper.
Cause I doubt you'll be satisfied with default gba screen
>>
Backlit SP + headphone adapter + flashcard is the true master race
>>
>>253762786
SP may be cramped, but don't forget the original GBA has the tiniest goddamn D-pad ever made. It's the same size as the one on the GameCube controller.
>>
>>253762967
I have a GBC and the screen on that is fine
>>
>>253762806
they are quite popular. it's mostly change of display and sometimes paint job. changing screen is pretty easy to do yourself, but only if you are not clumsy. (and that thing on a pic looks fucking awkward)
>>
>>253763186
then go for original gba without worries I guess. it has best form factor
>>
>>253763005

I only have frontlit SP and an Elink
>>
>>253763330
I'll probably do that and if the screen is that much of an issue I'll either get a SP or just get a PSP and emulate on it
>>
PSP 2/3000 is pretty much the best way to go. It's super easy to install cfw and the GBA emulator is pretty excellent.
>>
>>253763604
fuck emulation, that shit doesn't worth the hassle at all. original hardware and flashcard is way to go.
if you were ok with GBC's screen, you'll be ok with GBA's one.
>>
>>253763801

GBA emulation is pretty good you know. Not cycle accurate like SNES but great unless you expect some obscure shit to work perfectly.

That said, having a flashcart on the side is a good idea.
>>
>>253763537
You can easily get the adapter on ebay for a couple of bucks
>>
>>253763801
>emulation

Yes it is!

Also get a gameboy pocket light model.

Two GOAT handhelds.
>>
>>253763979

I used to have a splitter cable that let me charge and use headphones at the same time.
But I don't care enough, I just use my PSP for most GBA things.
>>
>>253763942
what the point getting something NOT to play obscure shit? Especially with amount of hacks and translation available out there. I don't need emulator which capable to run decently only most popular titles.
Of course if you know jack about library and want to play only 10% of it you heard of - feel free to emulate. Your loss.
>>
>>253748426
>The whole reason my interest is piqued is because the modded GBA has a brighter screen than the 101

it really doesn't.
It's EXACTLY the same screen, just with a cable that converts it to fit in a regular GBA.

Also, do NOT buy one for $150.
Buy a regular GBA that is in good condition for $20, then buy a busted GBA-SP AGS-101 with a working screen for $30, get an adapter cable for $10, and a wire to solder to get voltage.
Oh, also, some very thin double sided tape.

If you wanna go crazy, also buy a glass lens replacement.

You'll need to shave down some ledges on the inside of the chassis, but it's like 15 minutes of work with a razor blade.
>>
>>253748426
Pick a PSP GO an then install a cfw
Totally worth it
