For someone entering the series I would start with the first game and play them in order. Going Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, and then Call of Pripyat.
Clear Sky is the least popular for various reasons and you could skip in entirely if you like. The reason for it's unpopularity is the faction war system wherein even if you kill everyone in a faction they will still exist and try to raid areas that your faction owns, mutants appeared on the map which ruins surprise encounters, and the story is rather dull in comparison to the other two.
I would also highly recommend not using any mods in your first playthrough.

2.0 and following patches completely ruined the mod and it's universally acknowledged as shit.

X18 was the spookiest fucking level I've ever played.Poltergeists,fucking telephatic dwarves,pseudo-giants and shit.I nearly had a nervous breakdown after playing that.
X18 scared me to the point it marked the end of my first playtrough
Poltergeists were the most harmless for me. Once I realized you can just run around them and they are practically harmless I stopped wasting bullets on them, especially since they take forever to kill.
Fucking snorks on the other hand. Got attacked by like 4 at once in Wild Territory and they spooked me up on some bulldozer where I sat for 15 minutes making sure no more were around after killing them.
