I think both Pluto and Eris should be planets. The only reason Pluto isn't a planet anymore is because the scientists didn't want to add new planets. So they settled on removing one. Is this one of those threads?
I hope it is

Guys, just look at all the stuff around us, the world, our sentience, and the universe's contents. The concept of humans becoming sentient and becoming aware of everything around them is a truly baffling thing. What if humans never thought of the concept of owning land, what if there was never any formations of countries made in the world, what if when we colonized other planets the planets claimed independence from Earth itself, their mother planet? Imagine the scale of humans relative to planets in comparison, imagine Earth in comparison to the sun, imagine the sun in comparison to larger and larger celestial bodies. What if there is life out there, how would we humans handle it? Is there a way humans could advance any further in technology when we reach the age of universality? The concept of being able to think on our own, thinking up new things that don't even exist, and just being you is one that can shiver the spine. Why do us humans find music appealing to the senses? What if music was never invented? Do humans become more and more sentient as we evolve on? Will humans develop a higher form of thinking, the ability to conjure greater scientific accomplishments? Just look around at the world around you, imagine a camera zooming out from where you are sitting right now, slowly zooming out to a largest perspective of the Earth, showing you how puny you are in comparison to this planet that we live on every day. Imagine the view panning out further, to a gigantic sun, with the Earth as insignificant as a particle of dust. If the human race suddenly died out, would our technology, accomplishments, and feats all be in vain? What significance does our race have in this unforgiving universe? What significance do you have?

We always knew Pluto was small. when I was a kid people would talk about how tiny Pluto was....yet it was considered a planet.

Here should be the qualifications of a planet:

Is it spherical enough?
Does it not orbit around anything?
And does it have enough mass to pull other large objects (moons) into its orbit? (although an object does not need moons to be considered a planet)

Pluto fulfills all three qualifications....in my view it is a planet. Planet, dwarf planet, same fucking thing

Those are difficult and hefty questions, I sometimes worry that humanity will wipe itself out or enter a state of severe decline before we even establish a permanent foothold on another world in the solar system, and what if we do and things on Earth get so bad that the poor bastards have to come home immediately, only Earth can sustain them and Earth is having problems, so much for our two-planet insurance policy then.

And then I see that we humans are focusing too much on Earth, we've become pathologically altruistic and moral and it is like a heavy steel chain weighing us down, weighing our potential down.

If we returned to the era of Empires, of homogenous nations not overran by immigration, imagine then what great wonder of science and space exploration we can achieve with a stable, educated and safe population, having eliminated all hardships in their homelands they set their eyes for the stars, this is the opposite of what is happening now in Europe.

We are squandering our great potential right now, and it's so frustrating. Consider the frightening possibility that intelligent life is so precious and rare that we are the only ones to arise in the entirety of the solar system, now consider that we are currently squandering our future, advancing into space at a snail's crawl, all the while making our situation on Earth ever more desperate.

Is there no end to this madness, the vastness of our solar system is up for grabs, up for colonization, but we're still stuck on our home world, for god knows how long.

What could have been..

>The closest thing I have to a "phobia" is that we'll blow through all our resources and collapse to a roughly middle ages level of tech.

That's the worry I have that I wrote about.

It's a frightening possibility, not to mention the plethora of space junk and satellites we have in orbit.

God forbid theres a WWIII the first such war to see space as a battlefield and in the scramble to deprive the enemy of information and and advantage in space, we deprive ourselves of access to a safe LEO and beyond should the unthinkable Kessler syndrome occur by nations hell bent on wiping enemy technology and not caring about the consequences.

I can't see the US doing it, they have the X-37B and possible future version that could easily locate, and deorbit or capture and enemy satellite, but a nation like China or Russia or so might not give a shit and blast the satellite from a long range missile making LEO that much more dangerous to inhabit and travel in.

Commercial ventures in LEO might lose their appeal if the risk of striking space junk and debris increases to 40% or something, then these ventures might lose client and interest and we would set back our progress in space even further.

That's just a worst case scenario though, but one to keep in mind.

If Pluto is a planet, then there are about 50,000 planets. When I went to school, there were two known transneptunian objects, Pluto, and its moon. Now, there have been tens of thousands discovered, and it is nonsense to say that they are planets. It's not even the biggest non-planet out there.

HFY is the best shit ever, yeah.

My story is technically HFY because humans found Earth, meaning there are other humans miraculously in the galaxy and have advanced space travel, just not us, we wiped ourselves out.

Turns out that Earth was a seed world for a Galactic Human Empire, one of many that were established to breed a new species of humanity on some of the toughest worlds

That would be even cooler. Having risen to the apex predator of their world, that part of humanity went and wiped itself out before being able to colonize the solar system.

Uranus and Neptune are not Jovian gas planets like they told us in high school. They literally don't know what they are made of internally and have always just made shit up about this stuff as they go along. They don't even know shot about Jupiter. When they crashed Galileo into it, they never released photos but changed all of their renders to something much more atmospheric. It also took much longer to burn up than they anticipated and amateur astronomers reported a giant shadowy area on Jupiter indicating it may have caused some sort of reaction.

I guess what I'm saying is we shouldn't blindingly trust these liars to tell us anything other than lies. Science is based on consensus and consensus is as strong as the weakest link. Cancerous group think has never led to progress.

>The Kessler syndrome is especially insidious because of the "domino effect" and "feedback runaway" wherein impacts between objects of sizable mass spalls off debris from the force of collision. The shrapnel can then hit other objects, creating even more space debris: if a large enough collision or explosion were to occur, such as between a space station and a defunct satellite, or as the result of hostile actions in space, then the resulting debris cascade could render low Earth orbit essentially impassable.

But yeah, I dunno if there would ever be any way to prove the model unless we could figure out what kind of imprint another universe would have on ours if any.

I think future humanity's fate will be worse. IF our sun exploded, it would take 8 seconds for us to die. That won't happen, though, because our star isn't big enough. Instead, if humanity is still around after however many billions of years it takes, the sun will slowly expand and become brighter, and hotter. We'd be baked to death very slowly.

You just literally "all sapient life forms will be carbon and water based".
Not wanting to sound like a fag or nothing but I honestly am in doubt that you're not pulling all this shit from wikipedia or just making it up as you go with you actually having precisely zero chemistry or biology education past high school.
I'll be taking my leave for bed now but you should really study up on some of this even if it's not your area of expertise (even if that would be like McDonalds or something).
Education is key.
