My idea is a mix of 3 genres. Phase one of the game would be a strategy game like Romance of the Three Kingdoms mixed with the conquest mode from Star Wars Battlefront II, so you'd command armies in space and target planets. Phase 2 would be like StarFox mixed with Homeworld, where you'd command your army of ships from an individual fighter while they're trying to infiltrate a planet's atmosphere and fighting their orbital forces. Phase 3 would be the actual laying waste to the planet and it would play like Dynasty Warriors.

I actually had 2 ideas for the plot.

1. You're a warlord that travels from planet to planet in hopes of uniting the galaxy under your banner for profit and control.

2. You're a guy playing a VR arcade game with the same plot, but you eventually become so obsessed with it that you spend all of your money playing it and start doing illegal jobs for the mafia just to keep dumping money into it, culminating in you eventually becoming the champion of the game, but at the cost of your personal integrity.

The latter was actually the original plot I had in mind, but I thought it would be too derivative of something like dotHack and/or too cumbersome when a simple warlord story could already work on its own without meta framing about video game obsession.
