The original Metroid II was linear, even AM2R can't fix that.
Though it made efforts to mix up the progression and add shortcuts, new areas are sometimes optional and stuff like that.

None of it is a meme. If you have the desire and the money to spend on higher-quality, higher-fidelity experiences, more power to you. There are diminishing returns as you reach a higher price point/power level, but that is worth every penny to some.

Don't pretend you'd rather have 2 GTX 1080's and an overclocked i9 pushing games out with ease over your dual-core Pentium and GTX1050.

i play the fuck out of it with my buddy still. Problem I find trying to get people to play is nobody wants to learn. its not as friendly as say streetfighter to button spamming. Nidohog is the closest we have now. Id play the fuck out of though. Online alone would make it great.

no, bushido blade is 100% a couch party game. If they managed to do something dumb like twitch integration then maybe. It's every bit a spectator game as it is its own game and standing on its own it's pretty dull.
