The sprites looked like shit even back in the day, it has bugs and balance issues out the ass, and the least amount of polish and quality of life issues in the series.

Even hardcore pokemon fans admit gen 1 was the worst.

one of the last main quests was a tool to do so i cheated to speedrun it.
Overall the detail of some minor items placment towns and such give me the shivers at the time.

This shit is only acceptable in a game where grinding is fun. In Monster Hunter, I can accept running a hunt 20+ times for a 1% drop because grouping with friends is always fun, and the fights take skill. I can't really defend something like grinding for rare runes in Diablo II though.
