It's such a useful way to judge games.
Positive reviews will only tell you a game is good, negative reviews will tell you how the game fell short of the reviewer's expectations; and if those expectations are similar to yours, then your optimistic preconcieved idea of the game plus the criticism of the game's shortcomings will tell you everything you need to know about the game.

I should have done this before buying Gratuitous Space Battles. My preconceived notion was that it was a space strategy game, but negative reviews would have told me that it was one without mid-battle interaction.

BDO has decent pvp, but in tier 1 node wars only. That's because only low level guilds with low gear will go and you can have fun in fairest matchs.
In general, no, pvp is just a gear check to see who is the one that wasted more hours killing mindless mobs in pve.
If you want to try a new pvp game, Albion comes out in 10 minutes, also Age of Reckoning is very good for pvp check that out if you don't like ultima-like games.

Requesting my MMO character on her Eye Strap Outfit doing stuff related to magic, brewing something on a cauldron, casting some curse or spell, sitting on a circle with runes and symbols while looking at the viewer, reading an ancient book, hiding in the shadows of an alley at night while doing an evil smile (covered in blood optional), picking some mushrooms or eerie ingredients for potions, holding a crystal ball, riding her magic broom under then moonlight, or anything else you want that could fit that magical looking outfit.
