Why RPGs (especially action RPG) even HAVE levels? Or rather, why the level cap is usually so damn high?

Recently I played Dragon's Dogma and the fact started to bother me for real when I transited to Bitterblack Isle. Before that point leveling didn't really matter all that much, you could somewhat kit yourself with proper equipment, pawns, class and still deal with whatever task was laid before you in a fairly reasonable span of time and effort. On the island however I just got the same situation when I was lvl 1 where I got killed by everything comparatively quickly until I gained higher levels and better equipment regardless. Same solution for the problem, but this felt really cheezy considering that most enemies are same-ish and not that much more complicated that I dealt before that, it's just the stats that are far more ridiculous.

Not only the character stats are affected though, it also heavily impacts the equipment. There is plenty of items that become obsolete as the game progresses. The gear as a whole instead of becoming specialised instead becomes just stronger as the game progresses. And with random generated items akin to rogue likes this becomes really, really stupid. The main defining feature of an items becomes it's level that dictates it's characteristics.

In hack-n-slash RPGs like Diablo and Sacred this is pretty much a bread and butter of the game itself, you just go around grinding levels and loot. If you would remove the leveling and loot from them, there isn't really much else there to do. Which is kinda weird, I don't quite see the appeal of leveling and looting on their own yet in tandem with gameplay even with not particularly complicated core gameplay the game becomes passable.


I'm not against stats though, it is interesting to try and figure out a build for your character and such. But at times level is more important then players skill\wit.

I fell for the VR meme and so far it's been pretty fun.

The thing I think people underestimate is the value of immersion. It's easy to go "murrr, another ninja game with guns and swords" but that shit is fun if they really nail the movement and feel of the weapons. This is also why VR porn is horrifying when it's like, a first-person pornhub video and you're some hairy spraytanned fuck. If it works, it tricks you for a minute into thinking you're an action hero or a sweaty guido with a malformed dick

What I'm saying is even the most degenerate weeb should never play this game. You think anime girls swarming you while you shoot them with orgasms is a fun time until you're there while it happens. I managed two stages before I needed a shower and a priest
