I hate that any time there's a direct sequel in this series, it just *has* to take place in a completely new location and not carry over any of the characters from the last game.

I guess it was OK with the jump from Link to the Past to Link's Awakening where they weren't focused yet on developing side characters, but it sucks in Wind Waker and, to a lesser extent, Ocarina, where there was a lot more worldbuilding. If you're gonna continue right from where you left off but only include Link and one other character on a lucky day, you might as well make it a standalone game because everything after the opening cutscenes could happen anywhere in the timeline.
