How in the world did Sony manage to go from free online on the PS3 to jewing its customers on the PS4 without meeting any backlash? If anything they're thriving for it.

I've just realized women do, for the most part, ignore games unless they have a bright, colorful and easy on the eyes art style.
If they play a shooter, they'll choose Overwatch before Unreal.
If they play a MOBA, they'll choose LoL before HoN.
If they play TBT, they'll choose Fire Emblem before X-COM/XCOM.
If the play a RPG, they'll choose Persona before Deus Ex.
If they play a fighting game, they'll choose Smash Bros before Mortal Kombal.
You may say those bright games are more popular overall, and it's usually true, but even then the female population percentage seems to be much lower in darker games. Unfortunately, I don't have any data to back it up, but my personal experience.
Why is this?

Is the entire game this tedious? Fourth enemy in the game and I'm sitting here swatting away at its ass for 2 damage per hit because my broken sword broke again. I've gotten down to 40% so far but I keep dying to that jump attack because my character jumps instead of rolling.

That is a real shame then. There wasn't much to the story of the first game but thankfully it wasn't obnoxious at all. What has held me back is hearing how awful the story, dialogue and memes is in Borderlands 2.
