So, what kind of situation would be needed to get your ship to set sail?

Diakko: From Diana's side I think it would her refusing to Akko with something dangerous and trying to get her to not do it. Akko says she won't do it but she does it anyway and gets hurt really bad and she gets into the hospital. Diana is sitting next to her and she explains that it is all her fault, that she should have helped her or tried hard to stop her. And then she says she really likes her, everything about her that she has fallen in love with her. And Akko was actually awake the whole the time!

From Akko's side: It's a bit harder I think because I expect she would not realize it or just does not wants to admit it. So I imagine it's Akko going through lots and lots of effort, hoops and even stupid to stuff to Diana for some reason and Diana asks her why she all does this for her. And Akko just begins rambling about how she likes Diana and that she is great, that she wants to help her and just slips out that she loves her without even realizing it. And thn they talk about it. I guess.

Maybe I should write a fic about these.

If season 1 contained a romantic subplot between them, I'd understand, but after all that I feel like a romantic development shouldn't take too long. A couple borderline-flirty / flustered moments, maybe a big moment to solidify their romantic interest, then a confession scene, then the rest of the season carrying on without the nature of their relationship really having an impact.

They delivered last minute Fanservice (which worked better for the story than they intended) and I think it's the best they can afford. In fact history could and can deliver romance without any problem and help properly the growth of characters (how the Yuri works).
Personally I do not see any problem, but if what little they did was Fanservice, if it becomes canon, everyone gets angry for some reason.

I feel like neither Akko nor Diana are mature enough to deal with it in a subte way. It wouldn't fit their personalities and their age, both being mid teens. Akko is loud and childish and cutely dumb and Diana has no idea how to socialize so it would never work the way you described it. And personally speaking I like the dynamic of them butting heads and being childishly mad at each other so I wouldn't like it if they suddenly became too harmonious.

I could only see a mature type of subtle relationship with Chariot and Croix since they're both late 20s and seem to know each other well enough to have a quiet mutual understanding kind of thing. Kinda like StrikerS NanoFate with the silently looking into each others eyes thing and completely naturally sharing a bed but obviously without the "literally adopting an ancient superpowered metahuman loli. But I'd be equally fine with it if they just repaired their relationship and spend some time with each other in a platonic way.
